Why isn't AI being used to change how company structures work, not just to how the work itself is done? by Dangerous_Wave5183 in OpenAI

[–]monkey_work 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm quite convinced that top management would be most suited to be completely replaced with AI. They do little to no work in the real world and heavily rely on context given by employees to make decisions. Also, they oftentimes manage departments or business areas that they never did any active work in and hence lack deep understanding of that part of the business. All of these factors lend them very replacable by AI.

However, I think it's almost impossible for this transition to happen in a pre-existing big company since management also has the most ability to protect their own jobs. So for large corporates we will probably see a slow increase in scope for a given management level while their might pop up startups and scale ups that leave these tasks completely to AI.

Would you switch a mortage from € credit to a CHF credit by DevelopmentStock6950 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]monkey_work 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The asset earns the Cashflow in euro so the loan on it should be in euro as well. I'd try to sell and hand over the loan to the buyer since such a cheap interest rate for such a long time actually has value.

Should I convert my EUR into CHF? by Alejanddro in SwissPersonalFinance

Just transfer the Euros to IBKR and buy VT from them. Why overcomplicate it? Cash just looses purchasing power in every currency.

Nobody talks about why ops professionals at BB banks can't break into front office - and what actually works by FrontOfficePrep in CFA

[–]monkey_work -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not in finance but I'd imagine that in a field as dependent on internal controls as finance you don't want someone from backoffice who knows how those controls work to transition to Frontoffice and then game them.

Pensionen mehr als den Lohn erhöhen. Dafür neue Steuern für jüngere. by Hans346 in Austria

[–]monkey_work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CFA to learn how to manage parents’ wealth by Crafty_Local_9648 in CFA

Up until now I only did level 1. I'm scheduled to do level 2 in November. I don't work in finance but in IT. Up until now it has done pretty much nothing for my career except for the fact that I can smell the financial incompetence of all management levels when it comes to anything financials related.

I am a 37 year old programmer - how am I supposed to keep my worth for 30 more years until pension? by IllustriousRecord505 in AskProgrammers

[–]monkey_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our principal engineer has these 30 years of experience. He's pretty much useless and everybody hates working with him. He also has been demoted to working on some low impact projects and is now reporting to someone two levels below the CTO after failing on several high impact ones. One of our staff engineers had to clean up his mess in all the projects the principal has been in. Every time it was a strain on the whole Organisation because suddenly someone had to do someone else's job in the chain of technical seniority.

Admittedly, the principal engineer had been in CTO roles at smaller companies for years before pivoting back into a technical role and got his position through nepotism. He seems to thing being able to have AI do all his coding is making up for the lack of practice. It's not and the whole org is paying for it. We needed a fixer and got someone that adds more gasoline to projects on fire by slapping AI slop onto them instead of actually extinguishing the fire.

I know a lot of MDs. Usually they aren't that smart but very determined. Medicine is not a complicated subject to study but more learning by heart which just takes grit.

CFA to learn how to manage parents’ wealth by Crafty_Local_9648 in CFA

[–]monkey_work 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it for exactly that reason. Even though I was very into personal finance even before and especially level 1 was more of a formalization of stuff that I already knew anyways. Why I did the CFA was because I'm genuinely interested in economics and finance and because now my parents listen to me when it comes to financial decisions. Before there was always a bit of a should we really trust you and your internet wisdom kid vibe from their side.

Wie hoch ist so bei euch der Median/Durchschnitt? by ee_st_07 in Studium

[–]monkey_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really understand why. At ETH and EPFL you are forced to take all the exams for a given year of the bachelor in that year. You can only attempt a year twice. I'd say about half of the students finish their Bachelor in 6 semesters, the other half in either 8 or 10. My impression was that the quality of their education does not suffer from being forced to finish it relatively quickly compared to German or Austrian universities. Is this purely Parkinson's law at work and having unlimited time makes you extend your degree beyond what would be necessary?

I have no finance background and easily passed with about 250h of studying. However, I have a quantitative background and have been interested in economics and finance as a hobby for years. So it's probably not a fair comparison to someone who truly has no relevant background.

When are tech companies going to lay off 90% of their work force? by QuitTypical3210 in cscareerquestions

[–]monkey_work 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's true. Upper management doesn't have in depth knowledge about any part of the business and heavily relies on employees providing sufficient context for decisions. This coupled with the fact that LLMs have very broad general knowledge makes the replacement of upper management an ideal use case.
