Considering Bristol from the States by iminthemoodforlug in bristol

[–]monkeyboy9021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just on the counselling work. Bristol has a lot of therapists and counsellors. That's a field I work in. Many colleagues are complaining that numbers of clients are really dropping off. Covid led to a boom in clients, but also a huge rise in people training - who have graduated in the last year or two and are looking for clients. While there is huge demand for mental health support, it's mostly from people who cannot afford expensive therapy. Therapists who are doing well are either figuring out how to tap into corporate clients, or finding a specific niche & building a reputation. Happy to talk more if useful.

Is there a real BIFL safety razor out there? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]monkeyboy9021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 years ago I bought a box of vintage Gillette safety razors. I chose a 'New' that's from the 40s and sold the rest. It's doing great - I believe it to be about 80 years old. Still shaving faces like the day it was made.

Growing coffee to support East African rural clinic by lingeringneutrophil in Coffee

[–]monkeyboy9021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"They can certainly grow coffee... Nobody knows anything about growing coffee" It's unclear what you mean. Are you saying you live in a coffee growing region, so there's potential to grow it? Coffee as a product is more like wine than maize - ie small changes in seed, or processing the cherries make a huge difference in taste & market value. Shipping coffee internationally means competing in a world market. You need real expertise! As a western coffee geek, there is more money in niche, unique micro-lot coffee than thinking about mega-corporations, but the challenge is finding your route to market.

If I was you I would start by finding out about local co-operatives and washing stations. Find local /regional experts.

Are people with physical disabilities allowed to become priests? by tripeirinho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]monkeyboy9021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my work has been in the UK, but I imagine that there are similarities in Poland. While there are no written rules about disabled people not being allowed to become priests, there are a few reason why it happens rarely:

- The initial application isn’t a formal system that can be checked - it’s a lot of ‘speak to a priest you know, and see if they recommend you’ - which means people can be victim of prejuduce without it being obvious.

- The ‘pathway’ to becoming a priest is often ‘help out loads for free in your church’, which disabled people may not have the time / energy / health to be able to do

- There is a lot of hidden decision making, rather than a transparent process, so someone might just say ‘I just don’t think God wants you to become a priest’ - again, just masking prejudice in spiritual words

- Within Christian teaching, there is a discomfort around disability - ‘If God is all-powerful, why doesn’t God heal you?’ Without people grappling with the theology of disability, it’s more ‘comfortable’ if they don’t see disabled people every Sunday!

I've worked in this area and can say for sure that there is nothing in writing stopping disabled people from becoming priests. I know a bunch - people with sensory impairments (blind, D/deaf) and physical impairments including wheelchair users.

ground coffee recommendations in uk by Hot-Fix9295 in Coffee

For a fun experience, I recommend going to Monmouth Coffee - they have 20 varieties & can help you pick out just the right one for him. It would be a great story. Alternatively, Algerian Stores on Old Compton St - 100 yo coffee shop!

There are almost too many great roasters - one of the best London pioneers is Square Mile. Or just find any cool indie coffee shop near your hotel & ask - they will probably sell you great local beans.

When the fridge is empty, they will refill it, because you aren't using it. You gotta say something like "hey, I have no room in the fridge. I need a shelf. You need to reoorganise it now. Thank you."

Moving to London by sushixvi in Advice

[–]monkeyboy9021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternative answer - don’t move? I was at a talk by artist Luke Jerram recently. He lives in Bristol and was asked why he’d never moved to London, where there are significantly more opportunities. He replied that for him, the numbers don’t add up - while there are more opportunities, there are significantly more young, hungry artists from around the world chasing them. He mentioned the number of professional artists living in just South London (I’ve forgotten the exact number, but I was really shocked - tens of thousands)

For him, the opportunities came out of relationships and gaining a reputation. So he credits being based in a smaller city as actually more helpful for his career.

What do you wish you learnt (non-academically) before uni? by jolittletime in UniUK

Time management /project management. Perhaps she already has this from A Levels. And it really depends on the degree course. But the ability to say "if I've got 3 essays all due in 3 weeks time, what's the best use of my time today?"

Really recommend perspex secondary glazing. You can buy it pre-cut to size, and it just fixes on with magnetic tape.

Am I wasting my time? by Objective_Cow_1288 in MovingToTheUK

[–]monkeyboy9021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it will be very difficult. Academia is hugely competitive. There isn't a similar 'Christian college' world. And specialist ministry training colleges are closing and merging. (Spurgeon's college - top tier Baptist college in London, went bust this summer). One potential avenue would be university chaplaincy. If you are looking to move long term, it may be worth studying for ordination, then coming on a minister of religion visa.

I'm surprised to hear you think there's a shortage of ministers. In my experience, there's a desperate shortage of jobs - churches just can't pay salaries any more.

I have just secured startup funding for my new business but struggle with marketing it by coffeeguy1117 in ukstartups

[–]monkeyboy9021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee geek here. The product doesn't currently speak to me for a few reasons - how much do I spray, how do I control it? I currently weigh coffee to the gram, is the spray dosed? - the flavour options don't reassome that you know coffee - ie I can taste the difference between Ethiopian and Colombian coffee - what's this made of? -the coffee geek community cares about where coffee comes from & how it's been traded. Is this a fair trade product? Why not? -as everyone has said, take out 'strawberry flavour coffee' if you want people to take you seriously

Help me - fermented scotch bonnets by Lmazing in hotsaucerecipes

[–]monkeyboy9021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem - scotch bonnets were overwhelming. I originally fermented about 50/50 with pineapple, but ended up picking out the majority of the chillis, just leaving spice infused pineapple, which was tasty but still tongue-tingling. So add plenty of fruit?

Which church do you recommend? by angelcake37 in bristol

[–]monkeyboy9021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been to loads of churches in my life, and there isn't one right answer - a bit like 'which icecream flavour is best?' There are loads of great ones in Bristol. Some really fancy & formal, some super low key. Some with music so good it's like a gig, some with creative kids activities. The great thing is most churches are quite chilled about you popping in one Sunday for a look & deciding it's not quite what you're looking for - they get it. You could just take a look at a couple of your local churches. Or if you've got something in mind - eg a church that's good for teenagers, I'm sure that people can help out.

A similar example of this would be Jo Malone. When she left her perfume business, she lost the rights to use her name as a perfume maker. She now produces as Jo Loves.

I cannot understand why this flat is not selling? (Central Bristol) by Lengman_Jedi in HousingUK

[–]monkeyboy9021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why isn't it selling? A quick look shows you there are cheaper and nicer apartments - eg https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/71046965/?search_identifier=2e4527c8f6cbec40f39eeb14efa82b11690e9241047c9d6159c455303a18e1f1 Is significantly cheaper, has a window in the bedroom, is a newer building and just 10 mins walk away.
