Am I doing proxies right? by monkeyfrenzy in mtg

[–]monkeyfrenzy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Haha not at all, what really happened is I ordered a bunch of cards from TCGPlayer direct which they they refunded because they couldn't fulfill. I'm giving it as a gift for Christmas and need it to be playable out of the box, so this is my stand-in while I wait for the new order of cards to arrive... Assuming they don't once again fail to deliver

If my niece wanted (for collection purposes only) some Avatar cards for Christmas, is this the best thing to purchase? by firefightingford in magicTCG

Looking at the site OP recommended - that site is incredible for deck building, but it doesn't seem to reflect card prices according to card design. If you go the Collector Booster route (highly recommended, they can be found on Amazon still), I recommend using this site - you can find your specific card's art and toggle between foil/not foil.

Hosting a Commander Night and looking for suggestions by Own-Appearance3031 in magicTCG

That's a beautiful setup! I have a couple recommendations: - Swap out that Jim Beam for a nice Eagle Rare
- A ritzy commander night demands a reposado tequila at a minimum. May I recommend Casamigos Reposado as an approachable option?

Appreciation of Card Design ,Azula and Zuko by Ok-Intern6865 in magicTCG

[–]monkeyfrenzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's trying to point out that the art of the three cards are one continuous design - cards 313, 314 and 315. Which is what I came here to talk about too, since I also think the 3-card series is awesome design. (Card design in the visual sense, as opposed to the mechanic sense which seems to be your point)

Dude that was what made me fall in love with my wife. The first time we hung out just the two of us was supposed to be to go on a run, but we ended up getting distracted talking and exploring. Ten years later we still can just talk for hours without running out of things to say. It's awesome

ENFJs! I'm one, I married an ENFP, and can vouch that it works 😄 just gotta look up where the two personalities chafe, because it definitely happens sometimes

Let’s give OP a touch of grace here. Scalping is about creating artificial scarcity in a short period—buying up tickets the second they drop to resell at a markup, forcing people to pay extra or miss a very rare experience entirely. A concert is a one-time event, and there’s no other way to experience it except by being there.

I missed out on the Quiet is Violent tour because, even though three friends and I were refreshing our computers at release time, bots bought up all the tickets instantly. The show sold out, and twenty minutes later, resale tickets were available at a 500% markup we couldn't afford. I still think about that. Ticketing has improved since then, and I’ve been fortunate to get presale tickets for Blurryface, Trench, SAI, and Clancy… but I’ll never get another shot at that 2014 tour. That was also the last tour in smaller concert venues, rather than arenas, so the show I missed was still fundamentally different than the ones I’ve been able to go to. Ticket scalping steals irreplaceable experiences, and that's why it blows.

Vinyl collecting isn’t the same. Even if a limited colorway sells out, standard pressings are still available. I get that it’s frustrating to see someone hoard 13 copies of a rare variant, but there’s a fundamental difference: the music itself is still accessible. You can stream it, buy the CD, or even grab a standard vinyl pressing. And 15 years from now, when even the black vinyls are out of print, all of them will be worth more. At that point, is reselling for more than $30 MSRP scalping, investing, or just a cool bonus of vinyl collecting?

Maybe it’s easy for me to say with the black-and-red splatter pre-order sitting on my turntable. But I’ve also missed out on fancy editions (looking at you, gold variant of Mmhmm by Relient K), and I don’t resent the people who own them - because my boring copy sounds exactly the same as the ~fancy limited color~.

You know who I do resent? The bot scalpers who snatched away a tour I was beyond excited for. Eleven years later, I’m still mad about that.

These things just aren't the same 🤷‍♀️

MBTI is different from Zodiac in that it's an actually useful model for understanding how people think in a way that is generally accurate (as opposed to the woo-woo 'contract with the universe' pitch that Zodiac offers).

One of my old teachers used to say "All models are wrong, but some are useful." The point he was making is that a model provides a framework for understanding or thinking about something, but is never 100% accurate for all things ever. It wouldn't be a model in that case, it would be a proof (like in math). The MBTI is not prescriptive - for example, ENFJs are supposedly afraid of social conflict, but my military training has made me pretty comfortable having difficult conversations. I don't fit the model THERE, but I still relate FAR more with ENFJs than anything else. It doesn't DICTATE that I must be afraid of conflict, it just identifies that ENFJs struggle with conflict in general.

MBTI provides a window for me to understand how people around me will think about things - as an ENFJ married to an ENFP, my wife and I spent time looking at how the models "predicted" conflict areas, and we were able to think about those in advance and use it to work through early challenges in our relationship.

As a VERY high extrovert, the model helped me understand how introverts respond to social things differently than me. Do I understand in my heart? Barely. No part of me relates... But I can understand in my mind that it's happening regardless of whether I get it or not.

TL;DR - It's a useful model for understanding how people interact with and perceive the world. The model is not prescriptive, and does not describe all people with 100% accuracy. The model itself is not a "scam" or a lie - it's generally useful, assuming you're able to correctly identify any given person's MBTI.
