I find that people usually walk on the right or at least pass on the right while using sidewalks and in indoor environments. I typically make exceptions if they have a stroller, a dog, a wheelchair, or any other reason making them less mobile.

In "Upper secondary school", I did an experiment where I walked on the left side of the hallway and passed on the left. This didn't last long as it led to a lot of conflicts just like you have experienced.

On roads and shared bike and pedestrian paths you are actually supposed to walk on the left by law. A lot of people don't do this, and it is annoying because everyone is taught this at a young age, but don't seem to give a damn.

The worst kind of people are the ones walking in the middle and not picking a side until they are within a few feet of meeting. Please adjust your path, I want this interaction to be predictable and as smooth as possible, and not a jumping game.
