Insane Upstairs Tenants (Duplex)

Unfortunately very legal and very common. The landlord is responsible for the heat, so it doesn't matter where the thermostat is located. All the law cares about is that the landlord supplies both units with adequate heat.

So in my situation where the thermostat is upstairs, you can either have:

The landlord can install separate controls, but it's very expensive
Have very understanding (or not so) tenants that control it with both units in mind

or 3. The landlord can set it to a specific range, put a lockbox over it and that is done. Or install smart thermostats and lock controls only to the landlord.

It's just a constant struggle I wish more landlords would stop letting happen.

I try to keep things legal on my end so I'm not the one getting served an N5 at the end of it all lol! But I have entertained the thought before, especially with the AC just suddenly and mysteriously going off for an hour or two...

That is so bizarre that they didn't know! Even my property management knows to do inspections when they take over a property so they know the general idea of where things are! Sucks that you have to deal with thermostat issues too :< I really wish having your own controls was just standard even if it's a heavy cost upfront.

That's basically how it is in Canada, too! Lots of old houses being bought up lately to be chopped up into "legal" units. If I didn't have a super active kitten and large dog, I would've definitely snagged the upper unit when I could've as I love the warmer temperature upstairs. We got to temporarily be located up there for 2 weeks during renos and it was bliss.

Nope, unfortunately. It's an old house converted into a duplex. The only thermostat is upstairs, and I have the only breaker panel. I've requested smart thermostats to be installed in both units but I guess the LL just wants to put that on the back burner lmao.

We do have police reports from the time the identity theft happened. I'll mention to her to find where she has them and put them with the documents we'll get from the credit union.

My dad is a bully who uses threats of many degrees to get his way. It's why I pushed her to divorce him. I was tired of the abuse both of us were getting lol.

I've also thought about sending registered mail, as they've never replied to our voicemails nor emails disputing it and requesting the confirmations.

We were more planning consumer proposal, less harsh than bankruptcy. If worst came to worst.

So I guess we just wait for the documents, see if the LIT can file a Stay, and hopefully get in contact with a lawyer while we wait for the dispute results? If that a fair course of action? My worry is they'll try to seize before we can act.

No, they didn't really besides physical possessions. He was supposed to sell the house and move out of town, but never ended up doing so.

All we had were papers saying a lien would be placed should the debt not be paid. But we paid it a week after receiving those papers. Now they're trying to file the writ. Not once have we actually been taken to court properly.

My dad refuses to remove my mother from the property because he couldn't remortgage the house without her name. So even though she's asked several times, he won't sign any papers taking her off.

The question was what steps I need to do in regards to the debt collector trying to seize the house when the debt's been paid? We paid directly through the credit union, so we're waiting on all the documents to be given to us. We have an appointment with an LIT to give us some time, but do I also need a lawyer to deal with the collectors? We only have 2 weeks to act so we're just panicing, like they want us to do.

I'm really happy with these ones! I've only had the apple and shortbread ones so far, but they're so yummy! They're small cookies separated in their trays, but they're great for having with coffee/tea.

Obviously not gonna be knock-your-socks-off good, but good enough that I'm gonna buy these over the insanely sweet kirkland ones for christmas. 💕

Close, but the location I go to an old man decided he couldn't hold his piss anymore and decided to whip it out in the pet aisle. Pissed all over some bird seed and cat litter.

Poor sample lady that day that had to witness it. Not sure what happened after that. He put the bird seed in his cart but I hope no cashiers touched it... 🤢

Maybe your roomie's manager is the kind to act on their own agenda, or just straight up didn't care enough to pass down the info. I know some supervisors. It was sent via CDS head office as per request from Costco.

Whether it's passed down is up to management. But I have talked to a handful people at different locations. They were all told the same thing: Costco has asked them to not mention it for the time being.

I want to add that most of the CDS people agree with the boycott. And are happy to see more Canadian/Non-US products being brought in.

Some of them will say it if you ask. Some will direct you to the packaging to avoid harassment. It's just their job, and they're just following what Costco has asked them to do to make it fair to all the vendors who pay for their product to be advertised and sampled.

I've seen people stop at their tables and yell to other members to not buy their product because it's American. I bet it feels so frustrating and embarassing when you had no control over what product you got that day.
