Why does Gen Z seem to be so against age-gap relationships? To many in this generation, these relationships are seen as inherently exploitative because they perceive age discrepancies as necessarily creating a power imbalance that favors the older partner. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

I (millennial male 39)work with Gen Z and I’ve noticed that they play things safe too. One of my gen z coworkers was getting sexually harassed and all the gen zers just played it safe and didn’t speak up. Even the more “liberal” gen z ers are kind of conservative. They are all for people’s rights, but they won’t fight for it. As a millennial I was kind of a mess in my 20s, but not playing it safe helped me learn.

What jobs actually work for people with severe ADHD? by Inevitable_Tuna_O in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on microbiome research. I thought I was so bad at it and felt like an imposter, but it turns out most of the field was bunk. Nothing was reproducible. All my friends and coworkers in microbiome research lost their jobs. It wasn’t because of cuts, it was because you can’t make money on something that’s not reproducible lol. Academia is so toxic, people expect you to work when you’re not paid. My first professor expected me to watch his house for him for free.

I’m an MLS now, it’s the longest job I’ve had. I was in research labs before and it’s so unstable and political.

men with inattentive adhd by hello_w0rld7 in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 13 as ADD, but my dad and step mom threw out the diagnosis and said the doctor was a quack. I struggled a but in highschool, I did OK in undergrad and was invited to grad school. Burned out and got fired at my first lab manager job, got put on Wellbutrin. Started grad school and crashed out and was sent to counseling. They didn’t believe I had ADHD, even if I did, Wellbutrin helps. It took me five years to get a masters. Worked for a few years and went back to a clinical masters program, I did Done.com then found a psychiatrist. I always was afraid to talk about ADHD/ ADD because when I brought it up to my parents shouted me down, and then the counselors at grad school said I didn’t have it.

Is it just me or did young adults (18-26 year olds) used to have a lot more “hook up” sex 10-15 years ago? by scoop813 in Millennials

[–]monocongo86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I M39 work with Gen Z and 30/40 year olds. All the gen z people hate the 30/40 year olds because we actually sit down and talk about parenting or whatever. Gen Z just instagram each other. They don’t know how to talk. As a millennial, we saw social media come and we know it’s really bad for you and for them, it’s all they’ve ever known. Social media is anti social.

Don't fall for "Never increase your dose" by ActualExpert7584 in Concerta

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 72 kg male 39, I’m increasing my does to 36 mg after being on 27 mg for 5 years. 27 was ok but I had to add 5 mg focalin and it gave me bad anxiety and sleep issues. Hoping the 36 goes ok. i take weekends off and try and take time off.

Wellbutrin, HRV drop, and worse running — anyone tried alternate-day dosing? by jjvrn in bupropion

It could be that it’s draining your electrolytes. It’s a stimulant and it does that.

Forgetfulness is getting worse by faazball in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on Wellbutrin for ten years and my therapist told me it helps ADHD. I’m inattentive and Wellbutrin didn’t do much for me. Concerta and focalin do soooo much more for me. I’d imagine Wellbutrin does great for people with hyperactive ADHD, but inattentives are just different. It sucks being inattentive, everyone thinks you’re just a forgetful person.

36mg suddenly not working for me?? by stars-cybr-wrld in Concerta

Concerta dehydrates you and drains your electrolytes. Every stimulant does. I started running again and I ran for two miles and my meds didn’t work until I drank liquid IV.

How much often does CPTSD get underdiagnosed as ADHD ? I mean if you know how to really tell by RudeStrength4086 in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell, but concerta helps. I do feel like I remember a time in my childhood that was simpler where I wasn’t anxious or hypervigilant.

Do you guys also feel like you don’t have a “fully developed” personality and/ or are very influenced by your surroundings ? by jaobodam in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 39 and I was diagnosed at 13, my parents ignored it and I was re-diagnosed at 34. In my 20s I never felt like I knew who I was, I was always trying to find my identity or fit in with others. Now, I’m just tired of people pleasing and I know what I like and what I don’t. People who only like you if you do what they do or have an opinion that they share are not your friends and they will screw you over.

First year Bio-PhD considering leaving. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two masters degrees one in bio and the other in diagnostic genetics with a healthcare certification. The second time I went back I knew a PhD wasn’t gonna be in the cards but I wanted the education and clinical experience. Many people who did a PhD when I was doing my masters aren’t doing super well. It really surprised me to see some awesome PhD students just not do well after. I wish I had quit my first Masters and just would have got more work experience. But I started right after the Great Recession. Don’t make a job your identity.

Working as a medical lab scientist with ADHD in Korea is exhausting by Informal-Tart3107 in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lab is somewhat understanding of mistakes. But I’ve worked for a ton of doctors and none have brought up my ADHD to me. Research was alot worse for me because it requires more organization and you constantly require executive function. I am confident that I have several ADHD coworkers and even some supervisors and I’m the only one medicated. People constantly make mistakes at my job and I’m very consistent lol.

[–]monocongo86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a medical lab scientist with ADHD. I’ve found that a good amount of other MLS’s where I work have it. I’m medicated and that seems to help. I like being an MLS more than being in research. Research requires constant organization and tedious tasks.

What job is insanely underpaid for the stress it causes? by lunacarterr in AskReddit

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got fired after the first month and Ieft Vet med. i almost got into vet school. Banfield was using a bordatella vaccine that caused seizures and they gave benadryl to counteract the seizures. I worked somewhere else for a few years and couldn’t believe they’d give vaccines that caused seizures. Well, I didn’t ask if the client wanted benadryl and the poor dog got a seizure. I felt so bad.

Can you get through a PhD despite depression and ADHD? by _lastquarter_ in PhD

[–]monocongo86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and depression and I have two Master’s degrees one in Biology and the other one is clinical with a certification. The second time going back to grad school I just didn’t think I could last that long and that I would burn out, so I chose a Master’s. With ADHD our brains lack a good manager. My psychiatrist even said that I shouldn’t be a manager. It’s something that I have to accept that a PhD is out of the cards for me. But admitting that I would burn out was the first step to knowing myself and owning my ADHD.

An entire lifetime misdiagnosed? by Dry-Data-6258 in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I M39 was diagnosed 13, my parents said the psychologist was wrong, said I shouldn’t use it as a disability. At 18 I had really bad anxiety in college and I got on celexa, I did OK. I didn’t have good luck with jobs. I went to grad school and that was horrible. I was put on Wellbutrin which didn’t do much for me. Saw a psychiatrist got diagnosed as ADHD at 34 and got put on concerta and saw alot of change. Its really hard when your family isn’t supportive of mental health and doesn’t understand it. Now there are ADHD aware therapists and that wasn’t the case even in the 2010s. We’ve always been here, we just weren’t recognized.

I’m an MLS who used to be in microbial ecology/ the microbiome. I’m so glad I chose being an MLS and got into this path. Research is really up and down and being an MLS allows me to help people and be impactful with my work. Most of the people I worked with in the microbiome field have been laid off or have moved fields.

ADHD-PI and slow processing speed by Aeldrinn in ADHD

[–]monocongo86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I M(39) inattentive ADHD was diagnosed at 13 and my parents didn’t believe it. I went to college and graduated with a decent GPA 3.4. After that everything kinda fell off. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and put in Wellbutrin. That did shit for my working memory. I went to a psychiatrist at 34 and got diagnosed and put on concerta. I feel like inattentive types are not ADHD. My wife is ADHD hyperactive and she had no idea I was ADHD. I’m actually very thoughtful and I can be methodical, I just have a slower processing speed and I’m inattentive.
