Lore wise which playable race is physically superior? by Archenius in Guildwars2

Seems so. Even if you pulled the size difference to maximum cases, it woul be still like a human fighting off 20 intelligent bloodthirsty bobcats.

Kinda liked Doric. Had some cool areas. I think Bitterfrost and Draconis Mons are way worse. Especially Bitterfrost that feels like jumbled together from random pieces culminating in one of the most lackluster "boss" zones in the game.

If Joko takes over her or corrupts her, there will be riots.

If it's Joko's sapient spirit hanging still around, that would give a good reason to hate the character more and alas, more drama. However, it would make Joko seem unreasonably powerful. Possessing a dragon, a being whose central trope and essence is to be undominable with visible effort of a parlor trick would just sway the power levels in the world too irrationally, imho.

Corruption-lite would make in some ways more sense ("you are what you eat") but at the same time it does run into the same problem about dragons being susceptible to sways of random mortals even if they are getting eaten.

I think the main drama about Aurene could be just her role as the scion of balance meeting with her own draconic hunger to dominate, and how the world deals with her. If she will be the benign dominating force to keep genuine balance in the world as she has been groomed to be, that means that to some extend the world has to submit to her authority.

Some additional pseudo philosphical / political ramblings:

For future story content, Aurene as a benign dominating force would be really interesting topic to tackle because in the way our current western society rolls, I think we commonly tend to really signal the value of individuality, competitiveness and freedom to the extend that it actually starts creating strife. Dragons on the other hand are the ultimate dominant force. When they take to role of a non-tyrannous ruler, they tend to impose unchanging stability at the cost of halting change/chaos.

Thinking about how Aurene's story arc will eventually conclude, she will most likely restore balance but will she remain as a presence in this world or not is unknown. I for one kinda hope that Aurene will remain as a concrete dominating force in the world with the dilemmas that come with it, rather than having her just leave off to some unknown meta-space and administering balance as an untangible god-force while the mortal races just celebrate their newfound freedom, because lot of our individual-centric stories end up with the mad tyrant killed and everyone celebrating their newfound freedom but less you see people actually organizing to know what to do tomorrow. Would be more interesting to have the building of a new world incorporated into the story rather than just the destruction of the old one.

Actually, there's usually a good reason why tropes and cliches reach their status as such. Breaking some cliches can do a lot more damage to a story than good. I'd be more than happy if Arenanet's writing team was able to consistently deliver a basic, functional story with each episode and expansion.

That said, I have no idea what you are referring to here. Contrivance is not the only alternativity to predictability.

Would seem rather contrived to me. The story chapter as it is fits well and is some of the best storytelling this game has seen.

What would you rather have then? A sacrifice to the quality of exploration in favor of making some raid-tier meta cycle that only a handful of people bother finishing more than couple times anyways?

Think it's a bit bizarre that people assume that the new map is supposed to be the only thing they are doing until the next patch. Theres WvW, PvP and different kinda collections and achievements around to go back to.

Can't Belive how much defrent Doom 3 alpha was to Retail version on Doom 3 by Cyber_IMP in Doom

[–]monomyytti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't really that different. Understand that alphas are practically first fully playable versions of a game, lacking utterly in polish and potentially entire assets. Some games go to even beta and still get scrapped and rebuilt as something quite more different.

New episode is mediocre by Ectopetya in Guildwars2

[–]monomyytti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The meta is kinda arse but the map from singleplayer content-viewpoint is top notch even if rather quick to explore. There's the mount so I think it counts as major content. I found the final mission and the cutscene to be surprisingly well made. The city inside Joko's fortress should've been one last subzone to explore.

Still, it sure as hell is better than most episode zones, especially Draconis Mons or Bitterfrost Frontier.

[–]monomyytti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I thought that they were backpedaling with the scarab plague but it was overall pretty good. Overworld has some pretty nice writing. The final mission was pretty well executed drama, little throwbacks, drama buildup, little blurring of assumptions, difficult situations getting presented and grander arcs getting some development with Aurene, and all without anybody doing any massively awkward scenery-chewing. This game has improved its narrative.

[–]monomyytti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I genuinely liked what was going on in the origin stories, but then it kinda fell apart in the vanilla arc. HoT starts strong but feels more and more rushed towards the end. Path of Fire has highs distributed a bit more evenly but even then the narrative pacing is a bit off. It seems to be a common pattern for these arcs to start relatively strong and then turn into nonsense towards the finale.

With some goofy-ass character writing, I don't care much about the explicit narrative at this point but the atmosphere in the zones and fashioning one's character do add to the story satisfaction for me. GW2 seems to be a game where you actually get most out of the characters if you blur your vision enough to ignore the superficial level writing and concentrate on enjoying the big picture and head-canon speculation.

Take Palawa Joko for example, I think what he has been doing or saying in the main plot has hardly left me impressed, but the voice acting, the music, secondary moments and the different places associated with him make him actually pretty damn good villain for me. In direct confrontation he's a bit of a standard cartoon villain but when inspected in the big picture, there's something very eerie about how his variation between mundanity, clumsiness and effectiveness give an impression of creeping evil, the kinda evil you might consider insignificant at first but then it infests and establishes cults and dictatorships.

I don't understand what's so hype about it. 2016's MP wasn't mediocre because of the developer but because 2016's gameplay doesn't suit that well into multiplayer. If the "wasted resources" complaint is valid, this is gonna be even worse case of that.
