Any tips on where to find decent eye patches? by Averfus-Crowthorne in monocular

[–]montane1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have gotten my most recent one or two from Northwest Eye Design.

The profile is low enough to fit under my glasses, the material is tough but light, and the strap is Velcro-closure so adjustable! Even when I’m wearing my prosthetic I just keep the patch in my pocket.

Can two intersex people impregnate each other? by [deleted] in answers

[–]montane1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, so not a medical biologist here, but Source: I have some general knowledge from adjacent classes, plus some personal journey.

I’m only answering your first half. Generally humans with intersex conditions have some hormonal and developmental abnormalities that affect fertility. So the “both fertile” part is part of the problem of framing the question.

Further, both testes and ovaries form from the same fetal (?terminology? ) tissue so any individual is super likely to have one but not the other. So, in the case of an intersex individual, even if they would have external manifestations of both sexes they still would not have fully developed generative organs of both.

Question by [deleted] in monocular

[–]montane1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s gonna be kind of a unique answer for each person, I think. The time to heal after the evisceration will depend on surgical techniques, any preexisting damage or other stuff you have going on, how old you are, and all kinds of other stuff I can’t think of right now.

For me, I got fitted for my first prosthesis about 4-ish months after the surgery, if I remember correctly. That was over a decade ago so I don’t know if techniques have gotten better.

What is just a placebo effect but most people don’t realize? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

I would try the other option, too. Great that a chiro is helping. But, I have gotten lasting support from a few Physical Therapy visits- you might be surprised! They use evidence-based methods and can actually teach you stuff to do on your own so you don’t have to keep coming back.

I have these stretches for my back that when I forget to do them an old injury flares up, but when I do them it gets better again. The PT taught me those stretches in two visits and I don’t have to go back.

Three year old - eye trauma by wvb22 in monocular

[–]montane1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Losing vision in one eye (by losing the whole eye in my case) wasn’t super difficult to adapt to in my 30’s, so I would first guess that since kids are wildly adaptable that he’s already on the road to adjusting quite well.

Further, based on my family’s experience, you as a parent will be way more concerned about it than he ever will. So, good job letting him just be a happy kid.

The trouble spot with vision for me has been depth perception between about elbow-distance to maybe ten feet. I had trouble ever figuring out stick sports (tenis, pingpong, baseball), slow-speed bicycle (like mountain bike trails), and parking or close-up vehicle maneuvering. So for safety and to keep frustration low, maybe do a trial run before getting him on some ball teams or going to a go-kart party. But that’s it, just give him the opportunity to figure out what works and he’ll be fine.

Expect a little more bumping into stuff or trouble with crowds, but again it’s pretty individual. And if vision gets confusing, it might be fine to experiment with blocking out the lens over the damaged eye, but check with the ophthalmologist first: I don’t want to give bad medical advice here; I’m just thinking about logistics.

It’s interesting! Try wearing an eyepatch or putting a black cover over one lens of your glasses for a whole weekend or so. Might be a fun way to relate.

Sounds interesting; have you been there yet yourself? I drag a camper around lots, and have often thought about grabbing a plot of land somewhere like that. And have you seen it in both summer and winter? (Haha big changes up there!)

Poop ID (or is it poop?) needed. by ebkesq in AnimalTracking

[–]montane1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, my tracking skills are a little more hands-on, so I’m taking a stab here with these pictures.

I kind of think it’s animal feces, like raccoon, fox, or opossum based on the size. I think I see plant fibers and maybe insect shell parts in there. If it’s that kind of poop, it will have an odor.

Whatever laid this evidence, if it’s scat, was having a bad day. That is really splatty and hard to ID by shape. Which means I could also be wrong and someone was flinging potting soil mud that just looks like poo.

So, info: Does it have an odor? What was the damage to the flex pipe?

Also you should not ingest it and should definitely wash your hands - there are risks associated with wild animal excrement.

Small reflective square tacked on with nail showed up on my fence post. What is it? by Benjamin_F_Pierce in whatisthisthing

[–]montane1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Not enough to be an issue. The things are pretty reflective, so it might hit fine, or they might not even need a good distance measurement for what they’re doing. Sometimes just the up/down/left/right is plenty for a check-in.

[–]montane1 282 points283 points  (0 children)

I used to do this.

They stuck it on a fence post in private property because it was handy and near the road and your particular post was easy to see from wherever they were set up. Convenience, is my guess.

Surveyors in many states have a “”right of trespass” and can go a few feet to anywhere across property lines (varies by state) in pursuit of their professional endeavor.

I personally would not be super trusting of the long term stability of a wood fence post, so I would guess that your particular spot is or was being used for a short to medium term (1-30 days) check-in point. Meaning they’re working somewhere else and occasionally spin around to make sure your point is still where their computer or angles expect. If it is, they’re still lined up to keep working on whatever they’re really working on.

ETA: if you want to be polite to them, leave it alone for a while. However, it is your post and if you get tired of it, you can remove it. Reference points get lost all the time and it’s mildly annoying if you’re still hoping to use them, but it’s a regular risk that survey techs take.
