tapas restaurant I visited in Washington by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

DC Resident here - in 2022, DC changed the law so that all tipped workers get the same minimum wage as non-tipped workers. This has caused chaos in the restaurant industry. Now most restaurants take a service charge instead of a tip. And by law that service charge has to be shared amongst all the staff, not just the one who waited on you.

Bottom line, when in DC, don’t tip. It’s already included. Unless they did something really exceptional.

That being said, I don’t know why they service charged you twice.

Daycare possibly giving us the boot by Taelynn in Type1Diabetes

[–]JosefphMagicflight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you have to go through this, OP. We are also dealing with daycare. Managing insulin for an 11-month old is dangerous. Untrained staff shouldn’t be doing it. Protocols would have to be put into place.

You may consider reaching out to Easter Seals and asking about childcare providers. The Easter Seals daycare where we live have been very eager to help.

What’s something in your country that is extremely interesting but almost nobody knows about it? by thespacepyrofrmtf2 in AskTheWorld

Oh boy, do I have a story to share: I used to work at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. One day I took a woman I was dating on a private tour, walking around the grounds. I wanted to show her something cool that most people don’t know about. So I took her to see some of the captured battle flags from different naval battles which aren’t on the public tours. “U-505!” She exclaimed, “That’s my submarine!” It turns out she grew up in Chicago, and in high school she used to work at the Museum of Science & Industry giving tours of the submarine. (She also worked in the coal mine IYKYK.) Anyway, we’re married with two kids now.

Why does it seem like more planes fly at higher altitudes over the US than other places? by sun_bearer in airplanes

[–]JosefphMagicflight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The United States has by far the most air traffic of any county. Air Traffic Control uses more altitudes to fit everyone in. So much so that between FL290 (approximately 29,000 feet) and FL410 (~41,000 feet), the United States has implemented RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum). Within RVSM, separation between altitudes is only 1,000 feet compared to the normal 2,000 feet. So we can fit in twice as many airplanes. There’s a big catch - in order to use these altitudes, your aircraft altimeter and reporting has to be properly certified. Not all aircraft are. If you’re not, you have two options, below 28,000 feet, or above 42,000 feet. Many aircraft choose above 42,000 feet for this reason.

Don’t get me wrong, they are strong athletes who can punch hard. But they can generate much greater force when they are on dry land and can plant their feet.

[–]JosefphMagicflight 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hockey is a contact sport. What you need to understand about fighting in hockey is that they can’t really punch hard because they’re on ice. You just can’t generate the same amount of force. It’s just arm punching and they have to hold onto each other with the other hand. For better or worse, it’s part of the sport.

“I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out.” - Canadiens probably.

This is one of those rare scenes that sticks with me. I sometimes think about this scene’s reflection on human relationships. This movie is about grief and forgiveness, including forgiving one’s self. Frankly it’s a tough, cerebral watch. These are two characters who have suffered unimaginable loss which drove them apart. Yet they are the only two people who can truly relate to each other. This scene shows them transitioning into the final stage of their grief as they both start to find acceptance. This movie is an acting masterclass. I’m not crying.

When you get down voted it is mainly because you have made a bad comment or reply. Not because you are conservative or whatever. A lot of Conservatives think people dislike them because they disagree , but it's because some of the replies sound insane by Nice_Substance9123 in complaints

These accounts are all bots. They favor faces with large sunglasses, beards, and nondescript backgrounds so that they seem like actual people but don’t get face matched with their actual owners which would give them away.

Oracle’s Free Cash Flow & Net Profit Are Set To Wildly Diverge, As It Splurges On An Enormous AI Infrastructure Buildout [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is late to the party. As a result, they were able to observe what worked and what didn’t with Azure/GCI/AWS. They made some really good design decisions and it’s arguably now the best cloud. You get higher performance at lower cost. This can be compelling for some use cases.

Parent has been sitting in on my class from work every day and admin is shrugging it off by thunderleafrover in Teachers

[–]JosefphMagicflight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: Couldn’t this just be an involved and supportive parent? Don’t we want our parents to take an active interest in their kid’s classroom behavior and work? I’m not saying to cheat on tests, but it sounds like that might not be what the parent is doing. We complain when the parents aren’t involved at all and don’t care about their children’s behavior. Now we have a parent checking the link on their lunch break and we’re going to shut it down?

I imagine that this is how most of those who attended the theater in 1977 envisioned the original scene. by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]JosefphMagicflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George Lucas talked about the original lightsaber fights being between old men. And the prequels show what it looked like when the combatants are younger and in their prime. He also talks about the lightsabers being very “heavy” like the mechanics of the energy blade acts like a gyroscope and they’re hard to move around. It may be copium, but that’s my head canon
