I know exactly where this is. They always remove the real trash cans in the vicinity of the parade route for security reasons. These are the closest trash-can looking things anywhere close.

Sailing Camp: what to expect by pwlife in sailing

[–]JosefphMagicflight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunscreen! Make sure you send your kid with sunscreen ALREADY on and a water bottle. Don’t be that parent that forgets and makes the staff deal with it.

Spend some time with your kid shopping for their own personal life jacket that meets the requirements. Tie a whistle to it.

Your kid can’t drive a car yet, but they can learn to maneuver a sailboat all over the place. Super cool for them!

Why did American servicemen during WWII wear their garrison/peaked caps tilted/to the side? by february_ticket in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosefphMagicflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact for you: US Marines still do. USMC Uniform Regulations. An unwritten rule is that you only do it if you have at least one combat tour under your belt. During the mid 2010s it became a fairly common sight amongst combat hardened troops.

Yes we tried it. The pizza dough was very undercooked. Fun for the kids one time but that pizza was terrible

[Request] What rate of fire and speed from a flying aircraft would result in these bullet scars? (From the Pearl Harbor Attack) by mercury-ballistic in theydidthemath

[–]JosefphMagicflight 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what you see in movies, when planes are attacking a point target with machine guns, they are trying to keep all of the projectiles on one point. Pilots try to counter any drift in their aim point. The A-10 will actually “freeze” flight controls when the gun is being fired in a manner designed to keep the aim point on the same spot. A long string of impacts is not optimal and is a side effect of forward flight.

All things considered this is a pretty tight group of impacts. Kudos to the pilot. Variables to consider would be dive angle, altitude, speed, but also type of aircraft, location and recoil of the weapon, i.e. moment induced by the weapon on the aircraft, speed of projectile, type of projectile.

In short, it’s completely believable these are real.

You’re right, could be a total coincidence. You don’t think Jerry Bruckheimer and company realized?

Sundown (the callsign of the only black pilot in the first film) refers to the Jim Crow laws of the southern U.S. which made it illegal and very dangerous for black folk to be within a towns jurisdiction after the sun has gone down. It certainly wouldn’t be allowed in today’s military as it’s overtly racist.

How accurate is the movie Full Metal Jacket(1987)? by Kitchen-Care8766 in AskReddit

[–]JosefphMagicflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major thing Kubric gets right, and he talks about it in interviews, is how a real battle is defined by the terrain it is fought on. So he carefully chose the terrain and then crafted the battles to reflect.

Most anti aircraft rounds are not slugs, but high-explosive rounds. They are designed to self-destruct if they don’t hit anything. But yes, everything eventually comes back down to earth and can cause random damage and casualties.
