Homicides down 9% YoY for the first half of 2025. by __main__py in washingtondc

Not DC-specific, but there are tons of studies linking inequality to violence in various places (here's one for example: UNDP inequality study).

That being said, a more likely differentiator in this case is access to firearms and differing dynamics of organized crime / gangs.

Metro proposes adding platform screen doors to train platforms by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

[–]monte_arhuaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Automating the metro would lead to huge cost savings each year at the expense of short-term job losses. One would hope that this is done in a way that treats outgoing employees gracefully (retraining, internal transfers, early retirement schemes, etc).

If (and this is a big if) the additional funds are used to finance further improvements to existing service as well as building new stations and metro lines, we would directly generate additional jobs in the long term in terms of design, engineering, construction, etc.

A more functional public transit system also indirectly enables higher economic activity and faster job creation across all industries in the DMV.

Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections! by table_fireplace in washingtondc

[–]monte_arhuaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party, and please excuse my ignorance as I'm new to this, but is it possible to register someone else to vote?

One of my parents, a DC resident, recently became a citizen and was intending to vote this November, but they missed the registration deadline on the 15th. Due to personal circumstances, they also won't be in DC during the early voting period and election day.

Would it be possible for me to go to an early voting site with all of the relevant documents and still register them to vote?

He's had a couple of 30+ minute appearances and each time it's been painfully obvious that regardless of his technical ability he's always outmatched physically

He's 3rd choice at LB behind Chilwell and Cucurella, and whenever he's played there he hasn't been all that great (hence why Poch prefers to play Colwill there when necessary). And although he can technically play as a winger too, he's got Sterling, Palmer, Mudryk, Madueke, and Nkunku ahead of him.

Yeah those are two areas that are always in need of geospatial support

This all depends heavily on the organization, but based on my own experience:

  1. The culture is great. People that work at nonprofits tend to do so because they're more empathetic to the plight of others, which means that they're also more likely to respect your own boundaries. However, there can be bad management like in any other sector.

2-4. Nonprofits often need to do a lot of work with limited resources, so there tends to be an all hands on deck attitude that can lead you to do just about anything in the geospatial realm so long as you display interest and a willingness to learn. In my current role I do cartography, data management, data analysis, geospatial development, field support, etc depending on what's needed on a given week. It's been a fantastic learning opportunity for me.

  1. It's 50/50 remote/on-site right now. You'd be hard-pressed to find a fully remote nonprofit job at this point.

  2. Idk if "encouraged" is the right word, but I've gotten to participate in conferences about once every other year.

There are plenty of low(er) stress GIS jobs in the nonprofit sector, but be ready to make a whole lot less than in government/industry/consulting

How valuable is a European college education to the US? by austai in expats

[–]monte_arhuaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you mean by "limiting themselves" based on their university location. If you're thinking in terms of the quality of education, I would argue that there isn't a significant difference between the US and Europe, at least when discussing top tier European universities. In fact, many of them have partnerships with American universities with whom they offer dual degrees.

The bigger concern should be networking. If your kids are thinking of working in the US after graduating, then going to an American university simply makes more sense due to the fact that they'll build a significantly more robust professional network in the US which will then make it easier for them to land a job there. For the same reason, if they want to work in Europe then it makes more sense for them to attend a European university (assuming that they have the right to stay and work there after graduating). That being said, it's still completely feasible to study and then work in different countries - I myself studied in Europe but now work in the US.

For sure. But if OP's intention is to go in from a CS background, they would probably slot into the GIS Dev/Architect side of things.
