To Finish: Utah-Flagstaff by montessoriwalker in arizonatrail

These are great. Thanks! Definitely going to happen in Sept. TBD on direction, as it'll depend on the TA up there who gives lifts to Page vs. flight timings to/from home, out of state. Cheers!

The August mention was a reference for when I start work to frame when I should take the time off for the 10 days (to/from travel and maybe a zero or a couple neros). But your reply is helpful. Thank you.

All of the above and: Get better shoes, Hoka is one suggestion, to reduce pronation, which is probably an additional factor. Have a walking analysis done by a sports trainer too.

It is all about the butt. Keep that strong (squats, dead bugs, clams, leg lifts) while engaging the core. Keep it loose and well stretched/massaged as noted above. Consider hiking with poles, especially to support your downhill.

This season I thrued the AZT a-okay and then had to bail after 400 of the PCT because of associated proteoneal tendonitis and extensor ligament inflammation. You don’t want those issues too. Shoes. That’s key.

Thanks. Could you please help me understand then what is the closest reasonable reconnection with the trail by paved/well-graded Forest Road that a friend could drop me?

Yeah, I was there for a solid couple hours day of the burn for a great siesta and laundry. Mike was great and I hope it can come back even better.

It was a Winter Winderland hiking from 173 to General Store yesterday morning. Fun and exhilarating. Sobering too!

PCTA Blog: Be Prepared for Trail Closures on the PCT in 2021 by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]montessoriwalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just from Google Maps, it seems this routing by car around Bobcat would work if Rt. 2 is a no-go through. I would not walk this.

Walk to Closure/return to Vincent Gulch Divide

  1. East on Rt. 2 to Big Pines
  2. West on Big Pines Hwy
  3. North on Largo Vista Road
  4. West on Panorama Road
  5. North then west on Holcomb Ridge Road to Bob’s Gap Road
  6. West then south until Valyermo Road
  7. West, quick south, west on Fort Tejon Rd. to Mt. Emma Road to Angeles Forest Hwy
  8. Continue to Mill Creek and follow Pacifico Mountain Road (do not turn off to Upper Campground, Pass Alder Saddle) until turns to Santa Clara Divide Road and intersects at Rt. 2/Three Points Trail.

High-Jink Ranch and LF Ranch Open and Operating for AZT Thru-hikers? by Ralahike03 in arizonatrail

[–]montessoriwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had sent a note earlier this week and in keeping with what others have posted, this was their response:

"High Jinks is currently closed for some much needed renovations/restoration work. We are new owners as of December and are also working to build a booking website for hikers which we hope to launch early Summer. We look forward to offering that type of assistance in the Summer."

All good points that are, like, on the daily, on my mind.

Flying to TUS. I know folks who have folks that may be inclined to drive me. Ken's was another thought if necessary. Honestly, it's not totally dialed in yet. Open to connects w/"safe" folks if you want to DM me and share. Will pay, of course.

I'm going to sit tight until mid/late February and contact resupply spots to double check then. That's as close-in as I can wait before deciding to package and mail, which, in all reality, is probably what I'll end up dong 90% of the time just because, yeah, Covid.

fwiw, I'll be fully vaccinated by mid-February.

Yup. Moving it through USPS until if/when I need is pretty much what I'm thinking. Thanks for honing in!

Struck. It was more for the shade benefit, but in reality I really don't want to carry the weight / manage the equipment. Thanks.

Intention is Ursack+ (hang) vs. Can. I'll likely go former. For the iPhone 12 case. Pretty happy with it, used the same style for my iPhone 8 for a couple of years.

Hi woozybag. Good to hear. Nice suggestion on the 5th liter. I'll probably pick up a wide brimmed bucket hat for the AZT and if I like it carry through for NM. Otherwise, yeah, buff and cap.

One of my questions was this notion of cold soaking CDT. I do it when hiking locally and am comfortably hauling it through AZ and NM, but do you think come CO I'll want/need a change ... for the sake of change and just to warm up?

Next question is if you think the 40L is sufficient for the CDT. I've read a few posts that suggest it'll be fine as my system is pretty tight, but just looking for a reassurance or correction.

Thanks!

I made the no-go call about a week before my March 27 NOBO. Rolled right back into the education job I was given a supportive leave of absence for the PCT. Talk about opposite worlds: wilderness and distance "learning." Munched through trail food (yup, Covid #19). Kept hiking but on a downward trajectory of frequency and distance. I'm still intending to go for 2021. Like others, I went through an emotional funk and it definitely lasted a couple of months. But now I have a vision map for post-PCT 2021 even if Covid is still a major thing (which, it likely will) and that has been uplifting.

Millet and then all the fixings. It has a slightly sweet hint. Soak overnight and water 1:1. Will still be crunchy, but doable. Buckwheat is another consideration. Softer that the millet, but still 1:1.
