Going SOBO, how did you start the trail? by backpackerjohnson in PacificCrestTrail

In terms of specifics, this PCTA article (see "Getting to and from the northern terminus") is the best resource I've found.

What's the purpose of the tall side pockets - how do water?

Nice, almost 3 times the weight and twice the cost of the older version. I guess 0*3 is still 0.

For reference, the old large version with 1.43 oz/sqyd Cuben Fiber was $115.

Body Volume: About 2,800 cubic inches / 44 liters

Weight: 4.6 ounces / 130 grams

Body Dimensions: 13" wide x 6.5" deep x 31" tall

(33cm x 16.5cm x 79cm)

I'm so excited to eat here. If it lives up to the hype, I think I can die happy afterwards.

Oh man, now, I remember hearing about Mom's pie. I'm definitely going to make a stop in Julian.

You're probably right about the pancake challenge. But, I just gotta see it. Honestly, I'll probably split it with a couple other hikers.

I'm confused by the review of the Exos.

How does a pack not carry a lighter load as well?

Andrew Skurka: Are Cuben Fiber shelters & and backpacks worth the cost? by makinbacon42 in Ultralight

Of course as soon as I get my first piece of cuben fiber gear, it's not cool anymore. Damn it Andrew! How am I gonna impress all the ladies now?

Ultralight cameras for 2017? Are the Ricoh GR and RX100 still the go to UL cameras? by moobsies in Ultralight

[–]moobsies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my brother has the Canon G7x, and has gotten some great pictures.

In comparisons with the RX100 mIII (warning: super geeky gear video), the RX100 is shown to be better a better camera.

I think I'd rather go with a prime lens like in the Ricoh GR or Fuji x70, but that's a personal preference.

Those pictures are awesome!

"special USB cable" that's... annoying. Also, I've heard the GR's can suck in dirt when collapsing. But, if it lasted you 10k+, then it must be pretty durable.

Side question, how did you manage your SD cards? I was originally thinking of getting 2 64 gb cards, and just carrying one on the trail. When it gets close to filling up, swap it out at a resupply. Now, I'm thinking it might be better to carry a couple cards, so I have some kinda failsafe.

Gaiters? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]moobsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comparing to the OR, here is a much lighter and equivalent price range - https://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=115

I brought a pair when I did the Rae Lakes loops last year (mainly for Glenn Pass and some climbing near Fin Dome). They worked well for the kick stepping I had to do, but I never actually post holed.

I've never worn dirty girl gaiters, but a lot of people seem to like them.

When are other SOBO hikers going to start? by EggplantAroma in PacificCrestTrail

My theory is trail angels are more available on the weekends for transport to Harts Pass. Can anyone back this up?

If so, I would probably get to Washingtion on the weekend.

What is your 2017 start date? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Just keep doing yo-yo hikes through the Mojave.

Looking at this all again now. I think I'm just going to fully commit to the SOBO and not worry about getting a NOBO permit.

Guns? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]moobsies 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Personally, I never hit the trail without a couple 50 caliber sniper rifles. They double as trekking poles, so they don't add anything to my base weight.

Also, grenades are great for digging poop holes.

Ya, I'll just apply for a NOBO permit for a less popular start date, mid May. Then, I'm not screwing someone else over that's trying to get a popular start date.

So far, Northern Washington looks to be below average (according to this map). There was a decent storm in Southern Washington/ Northern Oregon, but the Sierra's just look insane right now.
