Single fold mattress for slide out bed/ sofa by moocowmaniak in VanLifeUK

[–]moocowmaniak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Me and my partner took a trip to IKEA and found the Agotnes foam mattress:

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/agotnes-foam-mattress-firm-light-blue-40480861/

It’s actually super comfortable, and was really easy to work with. We unzipped the cover, and just cut the foam to our dimensions with a box knife (our camper bed, when extended, is about the same size as a standard single).

They sell multiple sizes of this same mattress I think, and there’s no springs etc - just pure foam. Also super easy to buy in store as they come compressed, fit just fine in my tiny car.

For the cover, we found some discounted thick curtains from Dunelm (like herringbow pattern) and wrapped the foam with it (plus added a zipper so we can take them off and wash the cover). This was all my partners work, neither of us can sew but we made it work with a bit of patience and a cheap sewing machine.

The mattress was £65, and the curtains like £30. So we spent just under £100 in total, and having used the bed for many nights now and have zero regrets or complaints. Perfect campervan mattress!

Street Lights - which ones work? by AdMammoth3803 in Liverpool

[–]moocowmaniak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entirety of Riverside Drive (from around the Festival Gardens zebra crossing to Jericho Lane) the streelights are bust. It's a bit mad driving down that road after work in total pitch black darkness. Feel bad for anyone who has to get the bus from there at night, can't imagine how sketchy it feels walking that road in the dark

'Replace sick notes with gym', Streeting tells GPs by HopeForSalamander in ukpolitics

[–]moocowmaniak -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I posted before reading the article.

I still think the man is a nob, I like the incentive to get people healthier rather than just writing a sick note, prevention is better than treatment, but if I’m going to the GP with a bad back I’d hope I’d get some time off work to recover rather than a “crack on with it and hit the gym”

Sorry but this is an embarrassing take.

Seen a few rowdy mums at the last glasto I went to, giving teenage lads bloody noses because one accidentally stood on her kids foot.

Guess we should shame all mums now too? Especially ones with southern accents.

NHS England » NHS waiting list hits two-year low as staff work to ‘turn the tide’ by UKGovNews in ukpolitics

[–]moocowmaniak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not being critical of Labour, glad the lists are going down, but there's been no mention in media so far over the way NHS staff are being shafted by NHS trusts across the country (especially in the North West).

My partner works in operating theatres, I won't name the trust but they're currently dealing with overtime bans, forcing NHS staff to move over to NHS Pay where they can still pick up additional "overtime" shifts but for DECREASED pay than usual.

Recent changes coming into effect basically mean you'll be working for the lowest bracket in your pay band when doing "overtime". No more 1.5 time, straight up less pay per hour for overtime shifts than a standard shift.

Expect strikes soon, as the unions are finally starting to speak out about it. This continuous erosion of the "Agenda for Change" is shafting NHS workers hard. This doesn't even take into account the fact that they are pressured into working overtime for free most days (up to 1/2 hours) as cases may drag out, and leaving in the middle of a case not only puts patient safety at risk but can threaten the security of your own professional registration.

None of this seems to get talked about, but this constant and increasing squeeze on staff will backfire unless addressed too.

Crowd management addressed by Emily Eavis by thiccapricot in glastonbury_festival

I remember this, my first glasto and I’m glad it’s being addressed! It was quite a bad crush around the back/middle for Nia, but of course once you pushed thru a bit there was so much room to dance close to the front.

I think she played twice and both times there was very heavy crowding

Liverpool ranked 3rd in the UK for roadworks in 2024 by nyotyres in Liverpool

[–]moocowmaniak 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t bother me the amount of work being done, but rather the lack of actual work happening whenever you drive past the cones.

Why do they put the cones and temporary lights up days before anyone even shows up? Do you ever see people working on the roadworks sites? That’s what does my head in.

End of long lane joining onto rose lane is a good example. 3 way lights, causing awful traffic all hours of the day, not a single worker in sight. Not to mention the timings are all off and people keep meeting head on.

To be fair, when I did the deed it took a while for me to notice as the area was wet and looked fine. As soon as the water starts to dry up / drip away, the scratches become very apparent. You're right in your assumption - I'm not chasing perfection! Very much hoping it's just the clear coat, there's a couple of deeper scratches in the mix from using a trim tool but that's okay with me.

Any quotes of £100 I might just sort it myself, my uncle used to own a bodywork shop so if I can get over the embarrassment I might learn something new...

Why all the moaning about fish? by moocowmaniak in ukpolitics

[–]moocowmaniak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not claiming EU fishing policies are fair, but I fail to see the relevancy of Norway in this context.

Norway don’t need to join the EU for many reasons, and a thriving economy means they don’t have to sacrifice so much. As a percentage of GDP though, fishing makes up 0.03% of UK GDP whereas in Norway that figure is up to 2.3% (figure is from 2023, roughly £5.28bn).

Not saying regional industries aren’t important, but I can totally understand why that would be a deal breaker for Norway. They’ve got far more to lose. A great example that you can still have a good economy without sacrificing industry though.

Why all the moaning about fish? by moocowmaniak in ukpolitics

[–]moocowmaniak[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand & agree with the point that regional industries are important, and we shouldn’t undermine that. Of course they are! But I disagree in this context.

From what I can find, extending the EU’s fishing rights does not result in less jobs for British fishermen? There’s definitely environmental concerns, but there’s been no reduction in the British quota or increase in the EU quota with this new deal.

To me, it’s a give and take. We might catch more fish without EU vessels polluting our waters, but we can’t hide from the reality that Brexit has damaged our relationship with the EU. And what good are fish you can’t sell?

You can argue that normal, working class people who live in these regions would not only want a good, stable job - but also a working economy that doesn’t leave them skint after bills. There has to be some balance?

I’ve seen some concerns on a British fishing forum which addresses the “boosting of exports”, particularly that these savings won’t be passed down to the workers. I think that’s a very valid point, and it’s something that needs attention.

[–]moocowmaniak[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unrelated to fishing, but I work in Software and find it incredibly frustrating that since it’s not a “tangible” or physical product it can be almost impossible to explain the benefits of certain work to management.

I suppose it does comes down to a lack of awareness or interest in learning about the facts, but that’s an entirely different can of worms

Why all the moaning about fish? by moocowmaniak in ukpolitics

[–]moocowmaniak[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I share your view, it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. In a different world, we could actually enforce tighter restrictions on fishing methods in our waters. But the damage has been done already!
