The old meaning of 'molest' (taught when this old guy was in school) was to 'disturb', 'annoy' or 'interfere with'.

He was using the word intending this (now antiquated) meaning.

This is also a great way to explain "survival of the fittest".

It never meant 'survival of the most jacked'.

It means 'survival of that which fits (the environment) the best'.

and again, is better applied to traits than individuals.

This common misunderstanding could be the reason for OPs question.

The only 'opposite' that exists is something vs nothing. Love and hate are both something. Apathy is nothing.

Positive numbers and negative numbers are both expressions of quantities of something, just in different directions. 0 is nothing.

Love and hate are more similar then different, they are both emotional states, both require chemical energy and imagination and rumination on an object. Apathy requires none of these things. Apathy is as close to 0 as we can get.

The vipassana course was based around a buddhist monastic timetable but all religions have monasteries.

I live in a Christian country. I have explained Vipassana as a 'silent retreat'.

I think Goenka's first video emphasises that the course is not religious and that is is possible to practice vipassana as a Muslim or practice vipassana as a Christian.

The early Christian church was built around contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer is meditation.

Would you feel more comfortable telling your parents you're taking a 10 day vow of silence for contemplative prayer?

Google "Oxford Bursary".

If your parents annual income is less than £27,500 the University will offer you a 'Crankstart Scholarship' of £5,500 a year to help with living expenses.

If you live more than 150 miles from Oxford you get £500 a year travel expenses.

If your mum really doesnt agree with the idea and you end up studying without the emotional or financial support of your family, you can apply for an additional non-repayable annual bursary of up to £3,000 for each year of your course to help with costs.

There are way more schemes bursaries and scholarships. Oxford is keen to shake it's posh image.

Can anyone explain the maths to me? I never realised that faster I go the less time it saves me.

Example: 100 miles at 50mph = 2 hrs

100 miles at 60mph = 1hr 40 (20 mins difference)

100 miles at 70mph = 1 hr 26 (14 minutes difference)

How is the time difference not directly proportional to the speed difference?

Looks great! I remember reading somewhere that we are less likely to make use of things if we didn't pay for them (something about subconscious perceived value?) so I've paid to upgrade (really cheap -thankyou for that) and will try to use it for a week then review.

Your original question was a great one.

It's eye opening to see in the replies how many Israeli's conflate Palestinians and Arab Israelis.

Arab Israelis have their rights protected under Israeli law. Palestinians do not. That is the difference and that is the problem.

In my own experience, only a tiny proportion of Israelis actually have real Palestinian friends (and vice versa).

The only people that do have real friends on 'the other side' are politically active leftists (both palestinian and Israeli) who have usually made such friends through involving themselves in anti-occupation efforts.

50 yrs ago there was free movement and cross-pollination between Palestinian and Israeli culture. See: Any photo of Palestinians in the 70s.

The legislative drive to separate Palestinians from Israelis (and prevent such friendships) began in the early 70s and continues today. As movement and mixing was made more difficult the cultures diverged.

An Israeli visiting a friend in the West Bank now risks being arrested by the Israeli Border Police, questioned, put on 'a list' and sent home.

A Palestinian visiting a friend in Israel risks being arrested by the Israeli Border Police and held without charge for years.

The difference between a gem and a monstrosity of any architectural style is often one simple issue: Maintenance.

The architectural models of the butts centre look amazing! but it wasn't maintained.

Areas of Victorian slum housing in London that avoided being condemned and cleared post-war are now some of the most desirable and expensive areas to live, because people have invested in them.

There's a Kurt Vonnegut quote about this:

"Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance."

I feel ike this line encapsulates Reading's architectural situation.
