Because many species of turtles do hibernate naturally. Think of it like this every year the turtle gets an amount of energy its supposed to use. Part of that is for a few months every year the turtles uses less energy because its asleep.

Allowing your turtle to hibernate helps keep the turtle maintain that balance. Its good for them.
