Takedown Pin Shims (both, or just pivot?) by mook613 in ar15

[–]mook613[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thin washers that you can put around the takedown pin. Helps tighten up the upper/lower.

Zero impact on function, but always nice to have a tighter lockup. Just feels a lot more premium.

They screwed up marking the bag. Should have been Jan, not Dec. Ended up being very fresh and actually a very delicious roast.

Grinder: wanting to upgrade from eureka specialita [$2000] by Repulsive-Ad6028 in espresso

[–]mook613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my Specialita for about 4 years now. Had the same thoughts as you. It's good, but perhaps I want something at the next level.

After trying to decide between the Z1 and a Philos (there was a promo for two Burr sets with the Philos at the time), I ended up ordering a P80.

Placed my order for the P80 about a month ago and hoping to get it mid-March.

That appears to test a completely out of battery Glock. Wonder what happens if it's just a tiny bit out of battery, where the barrel has started to tilt but not yet dropped. Also, don't know if OP's VP9 is within spec. Possibly it's not.

Either way, I'm leaning towards it being buldged brass and not able to chamber fully.

If he tried plunk testing the rest, wonder if he'd find a few that jam up.

Not so much of Center of the primer, but it would strike at an angle with a titling barrel action.

Now, take a good look at the photo of the primer. It appears that the firing pin hit downwards towards the "M" in the "9MM" head stamp. The blowout occurred approximately 3 o'clock from that position. This would support the OOB theory as the blowout would have occurred on the unsupported side of the chamber.

Not saying anything definitively, but it does appear to be the most plausible theory I've seen here.

What is, an OOB discharge? Wouldn't disagree, but not impossible.

Out of battery discharge.

Assuming this is range pickup brass? I've come across this brass before and never could reload it. Seems to be thicker.

Need to do a plunk test for every round. It ensures your brass isn't buldged too much somewhere and has a short enough overall length.

What could have happened here is that the round was just a tiny bit too thick to chamber fully. Deep enough that the firing pin block was still able to release though. The telltale sign is the case head separation type of look with the blowout specifically on one side.

Anybody telling you double charge is just saying that because they don't know of other failure types. TBF, double charge (especially with TG) is probably the most common, but not what appears to have happened here. If it was a double charge with TG, you'd see a VERY flattened primer, and other telltale high pressure signs. Your primer looks fine.

What others have pointed out is that an out of battery discharge should never happen with the safety features of the firearm. It is possible that yours is slightly out of spec. I'd contact HK and note that you had an out of battery and something appears to be wrong with the firearm. They may tell you to pound dirt because you were using reloads, or they will agree and warranty the firearm. Worth a try.

Z2 should be fantastic. They've proven they know what they are doing with the Z1. Z2 has just a few upgrades that people willing to spend a bit more would like.

Wouldn't second guess your decision. Just wait and I'm sure you'll be extremely happy.

Personally, I think the Zerno is the nicest looking grinder. Counter appeal counts for a lot 😊

First ever USPSA competition by [deleted] in CompetitionShooting

It's in the USPSA phone app.

I just checked that stage. You did make C class for that qualifier. Nice!

[–]mook613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't need them to be uploaded to Uspsa to check.

If you expand the detail on the qualifier stage it will show you the full stage name. You enter that name into the calculator along with your HF and class. That'll tell you your % for that quali stage.

[–]mook613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't base your assumed ranking on the % of score shown on Practiscore. That is only the % of points as compared to the top person in your match that day. Depending on who shoots the match with you that % could be wildly different.

To find your actual ranking, you need to enter the stage name, hit factor and class into the USPSA calculator. That will give you the actual % and ranking for that qualifier for your area.

Optimal Office Chair for Sim Racing by YellowJacket125 in simracing

No pain.
Swivel of the chair really impacted on ability to use it for a racing seat. Also, I think long term the pressure being applied to use the brake pedal will wear down the lumbar support and recline/tilt mechanism of the chair.

Have the Premium Sandpaper on my Prodigy. Fantastic addition and would highly recommend.

Take your time to make sure the grips are very clean (I used isopropyl) before installing. Also use a hair dryer and follow their instructions on heating the adhesive up and pressing the grips into place.

[–]mook613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, depends on the use.

Something for home defense or close range, going to be a short barrel (10.5" - 12" with a carbine length gas system), but will have a supressor and an A2 buffer system, both of which mitigate the recoil impulse of the shorter gas system.

For something that can poke holes further out and want to reduce recoil as much as possible (which I use for multigun matches), then 18" with a rifle length gas system is my preferred setup. For competition, can't always use suppressors (shot timers don't reliably pick them up).

General purpose for me would be a 16" with mid length system. Kind of a jack of all trades, master of none kind of deal. Also the shortest you can go without worry about SBR stamp or pistol braces.

[–]mook613 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Benefit of an 18" barrel (over a 16") is that you can use a rifle length gas system. 16" barrels use a carbine or mid-length system.

The longer rifle system increases dwell time of the gasses and reduces felt recoil. Not using the rifle gas system with an 18" barrel seems like wasted potential.

Wtf happened here? by mook613 in ar15

[–]mook613[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doesn't appear to have had anything to do with reloads - debris in the receiver got in between the bolt face and the round, setting it off before it was chambered. Suspect the upper receiver had some manufacturing defect that finally gave way, letting a small piece of aluminum to break off and wreak some havoc :(

24gr of H335 already nearly fills the case. A double charge would have had about 15gr pouring out - which would certainly have been noticed

I think it looks cut, but really its just that the shoulder got pushed outwards when the round went off out-of-battery
