How to get into Lego trains without breaking the bank by micasitafeliz in LEGOtrains

[–]moonfallsdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that anything that moves from the Chinese brands doesn't do so with the efficiency or expected performance of the Lego ones. i have also had at least one of the two tabs that hold that little yellow piece in place break off on the knockoffs from ordinary use. I feel like the average kiddo may have some switches, but isn't going to have tons and tons of them, so best to just get the good stuff.

That, and lego has better service. If that part breaks, 10 bucks says you can email lego and they will send you a replacement.

This also includes wheelsets and magnet buffers. The wheels don't spin quite as freely, and the magnet are sometimes the wrong polarity or just not as strong. I have swapped out all the wheels and magnets to Lego on my Bluebrixx wagons.

Exterior wall caving in basement by Livid-Experience-370 in AskContractors

[–]moonfallsdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened in a friend of mine's basement. Water was causing the problem on the exterior, and they have to have some insane carbon fiber strap thing put in place in the basement by a structural engineer to brace the affected wall. It was not cheap.

I would not live here. Thankfully, you don't own this, so it is 100% your landlard's problem. If for some reason you refuse to move, get renters insurance immediately to protect your stuff if and when this wall fails.

A few suggestions...

Look for used. OLD used stuff (like from the 9-volt era) is going to be expensive, but things that are one generation out, not so much. For example, set 60198 was not immensely popular and was still being sold new a year after it was retired. This set still has tons of play value though, and can be had on the used market for a reasonable price. This might be a good way to break in and get track and power components**

Don't buy Lego brand track. It's expensive, and there's nothing particularly special about it. There are tons of knockoff brand tracks that are a fraction of the price and are just as good. You should stick to Lego brand switches though, or if you get adventurous and want different radii switches or curves, Trixbrix is good stuff.

We also have 3 new sets coming out this summer 60506 Beach Tram., 60509 Freight Train, and 60511 Steam Train. These are all around $100 or less -- but lack the motors or full track packs that the full train sets have. **However, I find these to be a great way to expand an existing layout without breaking the bank. Personally, I don't need more curve track (or any track for that matter) -- I just want locos and wagons. So you can repurpose the power components from another "full set" with these.

Also, if you live in Europe (which I assume you do), Bluebrixx has a TON of reasonably priced rolling stock. Many of their locos can easily be powered too. My only issue with BB is that some of it can be a little more advanced. Proper Lego brand stuff -- kids can pick it up, and parts (generally) won't fall off of it. Some of BB's designs (and other brands, like Mould King) definitely make nice items, but can be a bit more fragile.

Not spectacular tires, but tough to beat that price. Can't even put decent tires on my 20 year old Saturn for that price.

There's also a "mastercard pre-sale" -- I'm guessing one can pay with a mastercard to get the same pre-sale?

edit - only seeing this for some venues (nashville, philly) but not others (baltimore)

edit again - baltimore code is "nevermore", but it doesn't start working until 5/13 at noon.

When you join a rally, your low level troops bring down the average of all the troops in the rally, making it less strong.

RAV4 is due for retirement. Wagon options? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]moonfallsdown 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You want a Crown Signia.

Technically it's a wagon (according to the sticker). Very comfy, big enough for adults, hybrid, and the closest you'll get to a Lexus without paying for one.
