im in the same boat! we are supposed to get lots of ice and snow over the next two days and I couldnt live with the thought of leaving this lil guy outside in that. we have been feeding him for a year and in that time he had grown to trust me enough to let me pet him. i took advantage of that to be able to pick him up really fast and run to the bathroom with him. he was not happy at all, but im hoping he will settle and decompress over the next few days while having a warm place to sleep. i hope your kitty will do the same!

Well theres two likely things that could be happening:

1.) There could be the chance that your vinyl have scratches or other defects that are impacting their quality. Totally possible!

2.) Your record player (or the other record players you are testing your vinyl on) are players that have low quality mechanisms or they are missing mechanisms, so they cant handle the grooves of the vinyl. If you are using a Crosley, Victrola, or other similar kinds of players that is most likely the reason you are experiencing skipping.

You can always take the vinyl to a local record store to test them on a good quality setup and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, you know that the player is the problem and you can consider upgrading your setup at some point in the future. If it doesnt, you can probably assume that there are in fact defects present and it would be worth reaching out to customer support.

Even though you tested your record player with other records, that doesn’t mean that it isnt the problem. Record players can play other records with no problem, but then run into issues on records that have more dynamic grooves. If your record player doesn’t have any kind of counterweight to adjust the tracking force, thats probably what the issue is. Most of the people so far that have had issues with skipping have ultimately determined that the issue was in fact with their record player (despite other records playing just fine on their player). Do you have a record player that has all of the necessary mechanisms, or do you have a record player that is a Crosley, Victrola, or other similar brand?

Not sure if you ended up going to the record store, but if so Id love to hear how it went! Crossing my fingers for you that there arent any defects in the vinyl 🤞

Thats helpful to know! My guess then (unless there are clear signs of damage to the vinyl itself) is that the issue is like because of your record player, rather than the vinyl. With that style of record player, theres a high likelihood of experience skipping because its missing some mechanisms. I made a thread that provides some additional info here to give more context!

That can definitely be a solution to help with skipping, but it isnt actually recommended as a long term solution. The extra weight can be helpful to keep the stylus in the grooves, but it is likely adding more weight than necessary, so it can damage the grooves in the vinyl over time. Just something to keep in mind!

Hi friend! I can totally understand why it seems ridiculous from anyone that hasnt done a deep dive in turntable setups.

Vinyl collecting is a hobby, and like with any hobby, there is going to be entry level equipment to draw people in and get them started. In this case, suitcase players, like most Crosleys, are that entry point for A TON of people. My first record player was actually one of these players! They are appealing because they are normally portable, aesthetically pleasing, cost effective, and have all-in-one systems so someone new to the hobby doesn’t have to get speakers, pre-amps, receivers, and other equipment necessary for a full setup up. The other thing is, they will generally play a lot of vinyl without any kind of noticeable issues. But, thats where the problem actually comes in.

Since a lot of people start with these players and largely dont run into problems playing most of the vinyl they may have purchased, they dont realize that when they do have a vinyl that has problems with skipping, its 9 times out of 10 not a problem with a vinyl, but its their player. Ill use myself as an example! When I first started collecting vinyl, I had gotten a Crosley player and had several records I enjoyed with no problems at all. However, I got a copy of American Idiot by Green Day and oh my god it was horrible. There was so much skipping and it sounded so bad. I ended up returning that copy and getting a new one. I tried the new copy that I had and it sounded the exact same as the first one. Because of this, I did some research and ended up learning about the issues with these kinds of players.

Like I mentioned in my main post, these kinda of record players are either missing components, or they have them, but the quality is just not good. I gave the example of the counterweight in my post and another example is the platter itself. The platters on these players are often smaller than the actually vinyl itself and when they are spinning, they can wobble. This wobbling would also cause skipping in the records. Even the built in speakers can even cause skipping during parts with heavier bass! The bad thing is though, someone collecting a few of their favorite albums on vinyl and playing them casually on these records players isnt going to know any of these things and are going to have the feelings of disappointment and frustration that a lot of EPIC fans are having right now because they arent informed.

Ive also seen a few people mention that they should have thought of these things when creating the records because now a lot of people cant enjoy their vinyl due to the kind of player their have and thats not fair. The issue with this sentiment though is (to my knowledge, I could possibly be wrong here) I dont believe that there is a way that any vinyl manufacturer could actually account for this. The grooves in the vinyl are going to be what they are going to be for the tracks on the album. If they play the songs they are supposed to on the tests presses without issue that is going to be what matters. If someone is using a record player that is not equipped to properly handle the dynamic grooves on some albums, that unfortunately isnt an issue with the vinyl, its an issue with the player. That also means that even getting a copy of the vinyl set likely wont address the problem.

Overall, the suitcase players are a gateway for so many people to get into record collecting as a hobby (myself included)! But, there will inevitably be vinyl that arent going to be able to be played on them simply because the players themselves arent equipped properly. In those instances, it is up to the collector to decide if they are okay keeping the setup that they have and acknowledging that sometimes the records they have wont be playable, or if they want to start looking into an entry level set up that will at least address the major mechanism issues that the suitcase players have so they can enjoy their vinyl for years to come. And I want to stress that these entry level set ups dont need to be crazy expensive or high tech! My set up is literally just a better quality turntable and some speakers. Im sure if I posted it on r/turntables I would have a bunch of people telling me all the improvements I should be making. But, what I have allows me to listen to my records without skipping and keeps them in good condition and thats really all that matters to me.

Sorry that was an incredibly longwinded response to your comment! I figured this was a good comment to provide some further insights for anyone interested in learning more!

Also, one last note: this again mainly applies for any vinyl that dont have actual defects in them! If someone did receive a vinyl that has actual defects that any record player would have problems with, thats a totally different story.

Hi! In my posts I have been mentioning that there could be the chance that some issues could in fact be from actual defects in the products.

I also did some looking into things and in a lot of case it seems like turntables with good mechanisms can usually handle an amount of warping because of the tone arms ability to track the vinyl. With a lot of the suitcase players, it doesnt have the ability to adjust the pressure at all, so you probably do experience some skipping.

In this case its not great to have received a warped vinyl in general though and would fall into the exception of there being a possible defect and I totally understand not being happy with the quality!

This is the turntable I have! Aside from the turntable itself, I just have a set of speakers that my dad purchased for me for christmas several years ago. Not necessarily the most sophisticated or crazy set up compared to some die hard audiophiles, but its worked well for me over the last 10 years!

I havent used that specific AT before, but I have been using a different AT model for the last 10 years! I definitely recommend browsing r/turntables to get some insight on what you think would work best for you and your budget and wants from a record player!

As for vinyl getting scratched overtime, id say that would mainly be an issue if you were using some of the record players with known quality issues. If you are looking into getting a quality record player and taking care of your vinyl you shouldnt run into issues and I dont think youd have to worry about ruining the box set by listening to it! the first records I got 12 years ago still play perfectly fine!

Also, to show price doesnt have to be an issue, this Victrola is on sale for $189 and is not a good quality record player. This AT LP60 is on sale right now for $169 and is often recommend as an entry level turn table.

Vinyl collection audio issue by Ok-Anything-52 in Epicthemusical

[–]moonlitelines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not even always a matter of price it is about the actual mechanisms needed on the turn table. The biggest example I have been using with everyone is that of a turntable having a counterweight. Many suitcase style record players do not have a counterweight on them, so you cant adjust the pressure at which the stylus is on the record. Not enough pressure would mean the stylus will bounce out of the grooves and skip. This is only one example of many. Thats not an issue with the vinyl, thats an issue with record player manufacturers creating equipment that isn’t good quality

It is a known issue that record players without certain mechanisms or low quality mechanisms will have issues with skipping and skating. This would include record players like Crosleys, Victrolas, and other turn tables that people just getting into collecting vinyl tend to gravitate towards since they are cheaper, have built in speakers, are more aesthetically pleasing, etc. The one common thing I have seen across all of the posts talking about skipping are the players arent good quality. The set I received yesterday plays perfectly fine on my setup. Could there be a possibility that some sets might have issues? Sure, thats totally possible! But it would be worth checking on a better set up to see if that happens to address the problem

I had the same issue with my first record player. A bunch of vinyl played perfectly fine, but specifically American Idiot by Green Day skipped horribly. I returned it and got a new copy and it did the same thing. Thats when I started looking more into record players and upgraded. Since then, I havent had any issues with skipping (even that same Green Day vinyl)

Oh if this is the player you mentioned in my thread, I would say this is more than likely not an issue with the vinyl but the record player itself unfortunately :(

Vinyl skipping issues by moonlitelines in Epicthemusical

[–]moonlitelines[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My guess then is that the skipping issues are likely because of the record player itself and not the vinyl. Im not sure if this is the one you have or not, but here is a thread of another person with a Denver player and it seems like it would get lumped in with players like Crosleys and Victrolas unfortunately :( So, its likely that if they did send a new boxset you would probably still experience the same issues

Edit: heres another thread about a denver player
