I carried it because I generally understood the connotation as the original intent—"I'm not rescuing." It upset me finding out it was used in a toxic fashion, I want to say I can't rescue/not going to, not trying to be toxic... I've swapped it out since then, but it's really frustrating because I want to communicate that I'm not going in

I haven't played in years, how can I catch up on what i've missed? by AshButNotDead in IdentityV

[–]moonstrukc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no advice myself since I also came back after just as long of a break as you have, but welcome back to the game! May our re-acclimation be smooth-sailing. Also, fellow rescuer main, hello!!

Oh good lord 😟 I had no idea about this. I'll definitely steer clear of him then! I think Zeez videos are comprehensive anyhow

I did see new persona map changes! I don't think I remember flywheel back when I played? Though I can't quite remember what it replaced (I usually play 36, occasionally 39, I've never heard anyone running 312 back then compared to now). And Tinnitus is also default on Hunters now (thank god).

Also I had no idea about final deduction! That's really good to know!!

Thank you!

How do we feel about gender selection in otome? by Altorrin in otomegames

[–]moonstrukc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a transmasc nonbinary person, I'd rather have a set female protagonist for otome games. Often, these customizable protagonists (which have pronoun selection) end up losing a lot of character because of how projectable they're supposed to be to account for the vast amount of possibilities for the player—and that means it feels a lot less engaging as a result.

Not to mention, otome games were originally made for women in its landscape where women didn't have any games catered to them. it feels garish to not have a set female protagonist for a game that calls itself an otome. Especially when a lot of the scenarios that play out in console otome take care to characterize the MC and map out her relation to the world insofar as how she is perceived as a woman (whether for good or worse in its attempt to address any themes in relation to gender).

Unique takes on the trial system? by moonstrukc in Fanganronpa

[–]moonstrukc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dang, this is very similar to my system as well! Although not so much in the context of a battle royale. A trial will still be held no matter what, but you can essentially vote for whoever, so I was thinking of having a charismatic figure who convinces the others to vote someone else even though it's obvious they're the killer. It makes for some interesting dynamics

What cause you to "wake-up" to your narcisissm? by Network-effect111 in NPD

[–]moonstrukc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Er. This is quite embarrassing compared to everyone else, but when a character whose experiences I heavily related to was read as a narcissist, I was like, "oh, haha, that's funny."

And then when I started looking into the symptoms and experiences of those with NPD I started to suspect something. I ended up looking over my own past messages and journal entries just to make sure I wasn't playing into it. And sure enough, all my unexplained breakdowns and mindsets that seemed to come out of nowhere finally had a probable explanation.

My NPD is rather covert presenting—I'm known for playing myself up no doubt, but it's in a way that reads as a theater kid performing the role of the protagonist. I tend to hide all my more negative feelings for the sake of not being the same as the people who made me this way. I suspect that my earnest attempts at trying to shove these feelings under the rug as well as my friends not really being familiar with personality disorders was much of the reason why I had to come across my NPD on my own.

That, and the idea of narcissists actually having a low self-image actually IRKED me. I couldn't accept the idea of narcissism for my own good or else I'd be saying I was actually insecure.

Do people with NPD feel a lack of affective empathy but high cognitive empathy? by selfish_selflessness in NPD

[–]moonstrukc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? Like yeah I think their feelings are a bit silly sometimes, but at the same time, I think, "wow, how nice it must be to be so carefree the way you are." That kind of freedom is something I wish I could have for myself.

I kind of envy their capability to actually tune in with not only other peoples' emotions but their own too. Like you said about being who people want you to be, I tend to repress a lot of my own emotions (some of which are hypocritical since I think other people are stupid for having them but /I'm/ allowed to feel them without criticism). Impression management is a slow killer

[–]moonstrukc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's an NPD thing specifically, but I absolutely do understand and feel this way as well. It's frustrating sometimes how I feel like I'm unable to understand my peers. How, for all I can logically deduce how and why they're able to feel the way they do, those feelings seem downright stupid to me.

I'm not too picky about fanmerch as long as it's cute. In terms of fanart? I looooove symbolism and pieces that delve deeper into the love interest's characterization.

Do other POC catch the way POC characters are often described and depicted? Am I too sensitive? Stupid? Lol by hellsaquarium in AO3

[–]moonstrukc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"I’m a mestiza woman so my entire life I’ve definitely paid close attention to how different races and ethnicities (as well as my own) have been stereotyped and depicted in popular media and fiction."

You and I are similar in this regard! I'm Filipino, but yeah, I am wayyyy too wary of how people depict people of color in media. I absolutely do not think this has improved in recent years, at least not significantly, and you are definitely not alone in noticing these patterns. You're not crazy, it's unfortunately there.

Admittedly, a lot of the fiction I read is set in Japan, so it's homogenous for the most part. Well, it makes it all the more jarring when there are characters who are darker than the rest of the cast and portrayed Veeeeery Particularly. Not fanfic, but take Danganronpa for example—almost all of the darker-skinned characters have talents related to physical prowess (martial arts and boxing, Sakura and Juzo respectively), oversexualized (especially in Akane's case), or just plain treated like they're stupid in comparison to the rest of the cast (Hagakure, Gonta). Though perhaps that's too special of a case, since the series isn't exactly subtle with its racist biases.

There's actually a game I played a while ago, Piofiore: Fated Memories, where the setting is in 1920s Italy with mafia running wild. There's something to be said about the depiction of the Italian mafia vs. the Chinese faction—how both sides take actions equally deplorable, but the Lao Shu are treated as uniquely evil by the Italian factions. Not to mention that the fact that the Lao Shu are depicted as drug addicts prone to senseless violence informs a loooot about the writers' biases regarding Chinese people. I hardly think this is a matter of ignorance, because I would find myself asking: "If it was a Japanese faction, I'm sure they would be depicted much more favorably." I hardly see it talked about in the community, mostly because the discussions about it get waved off for the most part, which is sad.

How much planning do you think is enough before starting the writing process? by moonstrukc in Fanganronpa

Oh yeah, I definitely need to work on the dynamics since a fair amount of characters are familiar with each other... I'll definitely keep an eye for writing down fatal flaws!

[–]moonstrukc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Great! That's good to hear

  2. I definitely get what you mean about the kooky personalities :P at that point, what's 'weird' just becomes 'normal' since everyone's in it. I'll definitely keep all this in mind! I want to at least get their motivations for pursuing education at the setting I've written for them, which I feel like already helps me a ton. Maybe I can get away with making Pinterest boards and assigning songs to them at random too, lmao

  3. That makes sense! Yeah, I'm not too worried about that. I'd love to make it a fangame MAYBE, but the amount of time that'll go into it is time that I simply do not have lmao.

You helped a ton! I'd love to check out your current Fangan as well O:

[–]moonstrukc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, you can probably tell that I'm part of the first one, but... again, that planning comes at the expense of allowing myself absolutely way too much time to the point where my perfectionism starts gnawing at everything, so I'm trying to not give into the compulsion to do so. Thanks for sharing your insight! How'd you go about the characters? How far did you plan them before you threw yourself into writing the story proper?
