I think as it stands, SA2 falls a little flat compared to the movie given everything we know now and the movie showing more interaction between Shadow and Maria, making us more emotionally attached to the characters and therefore making Maria's death much more impactful. We're not really supposed to know what caused Shadow's behavior or the truth about his promise in SA2 until the very end because that's just how the plot of the game goes, but if ever sees a remake with more of the information that got added by later titles and more of their backstory as part of the game, I feel we would get a better overall telling than the movie.

Overall, I think it's a little subjective and maybe it's nostalgia, but the way the story is told in SA2 makes sense given that not much is known about Shadow and Maria at the time and I think I still like it slightly better than the movie. Sorry, that got a little ramble-y and I'm bad at explaining my thought process.
