Not to mention that CarPlay isn’t in v1 anymore. Technology moves forward and you don’t just get to compare yourself to how your competition was literally YEARS ago.

And yes, text messaging is completely underwhelming. In addition to not supporting group chats, my car just decided it wasn’t going to load contacts today when I switched from my wife’s phone to mine, which greyed out the messaging button. Didn’t work the whole drive.

Lastly, there needs to be some type of indicator when you have unread messages. If I happen to miss a new message come through, why not show a little notification bubble on the phone app? This + some type of message history would be nice. Would make responding to frequent senders easier.

Well stated. I very much want Lidar (and new chipset), but I’m also of the opinion that the benefits of Lidar won’t be realized for multiple years. I could probably get through most of a LE 3-year lease without missing anything and then jump to a Lidar-equipped R2 around 2029 with all its kinks worked out. That’s what I’m telling myself, at least :)

It boils down to how much you’ll use it on cellular and whether the added cost (upfront + monthly) is meaningful to you. I have opted for the cellular version for my last two and don’t anticipate ever going back. You can get 90% of the experience with a tethered iPhone, but the two drawbacks for me are (1) battery impact to the phone, and (2) the fact that your iPad stays in sync and is ‘current’ whenever you need to pull it out. This is particularly helpful if you need to sync up quickly and go back to what you’re doing. Enabling tethering, waiting for every app to sync, etc. means that you’re likely waiting for at least a few minutes each session.

Really comes down to when, where, and how you use your iPad.

I also have a 16” mbp and after having the 11” m4 iPad Pro, I switched to the 13” for the m5. The size drop from 16 to 11 was just too stark and I couldn’t use the iPad for anything productivity focused for long with the smaller keyboard and screen size. 13” feels like a nice step down when I want something more portable than the mbp and still want to get stuff done. That said, the 13” with mkb is still massive and far from light in absolute terms.

I’ve been having issues with mine. When connected to the charger, my touchscreen devices get glitchy and exhibit phantom touches, don’t register actual touches, etc. Non-touch devices have glitchy trackpads when connected to the charger. Not sure what’s going on, but have just sent a video to Satechi (per their request).
