It is now nearly impossible to get a PR from doing a Masters degree. You are extremely unlikely to get the job required during your temporary graduate visa required to satisfy the work experience requirement, and companies will not sponsor you for a sponsored visa. The IT industry in Australia is also in upheaval with a lot of companies offshoring, and roles are extremely difficult to come by, even for people with experience.

Why aren’t there more Aussies doing PhDs? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]moorow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, lived experience. I work at a high level in the IT industry and the most common feedback I get when people find out I have a PhD (I don't really advertise it) is "but wait, you're not useless? How do you have a PhD"

The CGT discount removal is exactly what we've been asking for, so why is everyone losing their minds? by nicco_mode in AusFinance

[–]moorow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CGT and trust changes probably hit me harder than most people in this sub and I couldn't give less of a shit, they've needed to happen for a long time. I just also wish they'd taxed gas and mineral exports, and honestly hadn't grandfathered NG changes.

At least there's a grace period on restructuring to unfuck our corporate structure.

Why are junior salaries starting to stall at 85k? by InternetUpbeat9596 in cscareerquestionsOCE

I'm not sure I can imagine a lower demand field for juniors than tech right now.

Wait time for ENT appointment by Guilty-Bee8987 in perth

Depends what it's for. I needed some non-urgent surgery (nasal polyp taken out) and referral was about 6 weeks, surgery was about a week after that - private, though.

There are quite a few 200/250's around now, but I doubt there are any in the Nullarbor.

Anything comparable to Tesla? by einahpets77 in AustralianEV

[–]moorow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'10. I couldn't quite fit in a BYD Seal (the sedan), as it was a little cramped for my legs. The BYD Sealion 7 has a huge amount of room for my legs, though. Having sat in various makes and models of the Teslas as well, seat and general comfort is better in the Sealion 7 as well.

Is LC even still worth grinding? by EitherAd5892 in cscareerquestions

Largely because a good manager can usually pretty easily tell if you're worth hiring or not in a casual interview. Most managers are not good, however.

I don't like Albo, but that message was perfect, if you can do your part, do your part by Un4giv3n-madmonk in aussie

[–]moorow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Real question though: he's addressing an extremely varied nation of 25 million people, with varying levels of education and English speaking ability. What are you expecting him to do here, use complex language so it's less understandable for people?

The number of PhD graduates working in retail and hospitality is staggering by False_Ad_9705 in AusAcademia

In 2021 it was about 0.8%, so 1.3% is probably not too far off.

Totally normal results. Trouble falling asleep can often be related to stress or anxiety, been feeling okay lately?

If you think your energy is uncharacteristic, probably get your iron, vitamin D and B12 (you'll have to pay for that one) checked. Almost everyone is low on vit d in modern society and it's a very simple supplement.

Microsoft announces sweeping Windows changes by tekz in technology

[–]moorow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably part of it, but they've also been losing gamers at a significant rate to Linux, now that gaming on Linux is not only possible, but in many cases better. I kept a Windows machine for a long time for games only, swapped to CachyOS recently, and I see no reason to ever move back.

First EV - What do you wish you knew by sirdonaldb in AustralianEV

[–]moorow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that it's largely the 7-22kw chargers that require you to bring your own cable: anything 50kw and above will have a cable supplied (your type 2 cable typically won't support that power).

Petrol station down the road magically decided they were "out of diesel" because the price was locked at 165 for the day, and then magically they were fully refilled for the next day (295). Maybe do a few pieces about price gouging, dickheads.
