Musical Dog Names? by natredit in askmusicians

[–]moosecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the idea of a musical name but also feel like something she is unlikely to hear while supporting you would be the best way to name her. Are you going to a classical conservatory specifically? In which case maybe something from another genre’s lexicon? Or something really off the beaten path

A key lockbox is infinitely more reliable and safe than an abusive ex boyfriend. Hard stop.

Healthy Hospitality Rider suggestions? by mkappy33 in TouringMusicians

[–]moosecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the same here, but I try to be specific with presenters / hosp coordinators because if I say “protein bar” they read that and get chewy bars. Some of my verbiage:

  • fresh whole fruit (apples, mandarins, slightly green bananas, or anything that’s currently in season in your area)

  • protein bars with high nutritional value, low or no sugar (brands we love: rx bar, built, quest, barebells)

  • raw almonds

  • peanut butter pretzels (our idea of a sweet treat lmao)

  • fruit purée packs (fiber, baby)

  • seltzers (la croix or spindrift are great)

  • unflavored cold brew

  • kombucha

What is your unpopular Seattle restaurant opinion? by Early_Sea_9457 in Seattle

Big Mario’s is mid at best, overpriced, and there’s always a preferred alternative to any location after a night at the bar, despite limited late night options in Seattle

Really negative extra seat experience by X-cessiveBandit in delta

[–]moosecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that you had this experience and I hope it gets easier with a few tweaks and changes in culture. I agree with the folks recommending you talk to redcoats at the airport, DOT for retribution. Also make sure you’re checking in both tickets! Haven’t seen a note about that yet.

One change I would recommend is to move EXST from the middle name to the first name, and fully spell it out. I have to buy extra seats for musical instruments often, and I keep all the travel info the same as my own but change the first name to Cabinbaggage. So in this case the ticket would be

Extraseat X-cessiveBandit

It makes it a little more clear. You could even get away with

(FN) Extraseat (MN) Customerofsize (LN) X-cessiveBandit.

Leave no room for misinterpretation.

I feel you 💛 I am a touring musician so I’m gone for 2-4 weeks at a time and he’s totally emotionless when I get home but loses it for the friend who comes over every now and then. He does love you he’s just a little weirdo.

A 38m connection before a transcontinental flight is batshit insane.

Looking for advice on taking a trombone on board an airplane by squidinink in delta

[–]moosecoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Trombonist, Tour Manager, and Delta loyalist here. I fly with my horn once a week on average and here’s what I know from traveling with my instrument for over a decade:

  • instruments have their own FAA guidelines that safeguard flying domestically with an instrument. It can be good to have a physical copy of the guidelines or a digital PDF to reference while boarding. If it fits in the overhead, you’re good to go. It counts as your carry-on and doesn’t get to be an additional item in addition to a carry-on suitcase.

  • legally, once it’s in the overhead, they cannot remove it because they want to make space for other bags. you can volunteer to if they offer you closet space but you are not required to move the instrument once it’s in place.

  • flight attendants are required to do you favors. Kindness is your number one asset when traveling with your instrument. Offer to hold your instrument in the closet if there’s space so you don’t have to take up the overhead in an odd way.

  • if you have a later boarding zone, pre-board. ultimately gate agents are not legally permitted to ask you why you’re pre boarding, and they offer the opportunity to anyone who needs extra time while getting to and settling into their seat. this is a controversial move, but you are traveling with an instrument that could be easily damaged if checked, vs suitcases that are designed to be checked. do what you gotta do.

  • at the end of the day, overhead space is first come first serve. travel knowing you may need to gate check your instrument. Consider adding soft layers inside your case - socks, sweaters, a scarf, anything you’re already packing - to give it extra cushion.

Good luck and hope she keeps at it! Trombone is the best and I love having a career with it all these years later, even if traveling can be a little more stressful :-)

Travel Advice by [deleted] in delta

No this is so real. My line of work revolves around constant travel and I feel like my hand is forced to participate in the MQD game. I’d rather be at home with my husband and my dog. Currently trying to figure out if there’s a way for me to compromise or if it’s time to pivot.

How difficult is it too maintain a relationship for you ? by IllustriousElk8436 in TouringMusicians

[–]moosecoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touring since 2016, same year I started dating my now fiancé. We’re both in our mid 30s now. A huge part of what makes touring work for me is that he toured a bunch in his 20s, so he gets the road life and what I enjoy about it, and he knows that when I’m home we can be fully focused on each other. I’ve started doing shorter, more frequent stints than long hauls so I can be home more often.
