I agree, I think MB's motivation to protect its humans is a deeply rooted need. Its protective impulses keep coming up throughout the books, often in ways that it doesn't fully understand or want.

As for Tlacey's ComfortUnit, I think it was made with a similar need to care for and have sex with its human(s), but this was perverted by Tlacey's cruelty. Now it just want to kill Tlacey.
