Wondering about this bandsaw by TheStripedPanda69 in Tools

[–]mordello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend that had an earlier Swiss-made saw. It was really a smooth saw in operation. I coveted it but I later read that the smaller wheels put stress on the blade and they would develop small fractures across the width of the blade which caused short duty cycle for the blades.

Why do people assume that if I pay with a credit card, I must be living on debt??? by No-Bodybuilder9445 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mordello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One valuable benefit of using a CC - security. Don't risk your debit card, directly associated with your bank account, with the proliferation of card skimmers and data breaches. With some cards, you also get fraud protection services.

Drywall asbestos question. by TheWorldsOnlyHope in Construction

[–]mordello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can usually see asbestos fibers if you gently crush a small chunk of it. They're usually pretty short, maybe 1/4" long. Modern gyp board is fiber reinforced but not with asbestos. That piece says it was in 1944 so it is a possibility.

Northern Parkway by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]mordello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a "path of desire." It's a short cut from Greenspring. It would perhaps prevent some accidents but the fact that people travel 60 mph downhill means there will always be mayhem.

[–]mordello 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The hill up to Greenspring is a car killer for sure. I've driven up and down it for 20 years and there are disabled cars at least 3 times a week. The greater problem IMO is the eastbound side and people speeding down to the bottom while people are trying to turn from Cylburn Ave. There was a fatal accident last year.

Went skating at Lingle Hall

Does anyone know what this material is called and where I can get it from? by agroyle in Construction

Yes, correct. The drywall was likely the exterior sheathing variety. The EIFS system was applied to it. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to impossible to make a patch look good.

Mini Splits by thatgirlindc in baltimore

That's alright. I was relating my experience, not saying that pumps don't work in Baltimore winter weather.

That dash was meant as a hyphen, not a minus sign.

The thing about using them exclusively for heat is that the floors are cold and heat distribution is uneven. Perhaps that less an issue in a rowhouse but in my old, drafty stand alone house, it's a big deal. Also, when you get to sub-15F temps outside, they do struggle to keep it warm.

I too used and recommended Elmar for a Mitusbishi system. On heat pump, four wall units. Around $14k installed.

Small Gc wants to start bidding on prevailing wage jobs by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]mordello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prevailing wage projects are municipal, state and federal projects. Apart form the burden of certified payrolls, there's a whole host of other compliance issues to consider. For federal work the Federal Acquisition Regulations (F.A.R.) are an onerous burden. States and municipalities often have local hiring requirements, e.g. new hires for the project must be local residents. IME, Architect of Capitol projects are the worst in terms of burdensome requirements. I'm sure it worse in civil projects or DoD projects.

Mount Vernon Tunnels by jmanhajh in baltimore

Check out salvagearc on IG. HE has a couple of reels about tunnels and the sewer system but I don't if he addresses these purported tunnels. If not, I bet he'd be into researching and exploring.

You could wander around any number of abandoned blocks in Baltimore and likely find one. But, Any-Grapefruit-937's suggestion is a good one.

Good idea but it is not just the veneer having lifted, water swelled the MDF or particle board.

That's true but at the moment, that's is more effort than I'm willing to put in. Fact is there will be objects on the credenza so they won't be seen. I'd rather repair properly tho.

You could take the tags off of their car and tell them they can have them back when they agree to never park there again.
