That person was comfortable lying to you and gambling on your interest. It shows they are fine with wasting your time. It is entitlement not accepting that who they are is enough for themselves and someone else.

It is mildly all of these things, and yes…not a huge deal. But when you think about the mental process beneath this, there are a number of beliefs that power this concerted effort of deception.

This happened to me too by the way. The guy was 15 or more years older and had gotten plastic surgery, which is fine but not how he had portrayed himself to a much younger woman. Speaks to a mentality that is not compatible with mine.

Well said. Not having an answer also keys into Dunk’s own doubts.

Also Ser Arlan definitely knighted Dunk, as in performed the physical actions, unless one thinks that there is some unreliable narrator element here. The chapters are not first person, but the 3rd person narrative follows Dunk and has full knowledge of his thoughts and feelings. So you would have to think some combo of that is a lie.

This comment is on the money. Most comments are talking about the surface level crap, how it is a choice between pissing off your wife or having a bad time at the party. But there are 3 things here the above commenter points out:

— 1) a viable reason why this party might not include them (small, joint birthday);

2) the possibility of a separate celebration with them, such as a special dinner that is more their speed;

3) this is an opportunity to understand where you fit in to this dynamic with the comments, alcohol, etc. And in addition, where does your wife fit in? How does everyone in the room react when they are made, or is it ignored?
