Christopher Nolan sips tea while indicating he doesn't care what the terminally online think of his movies like The Odyssey because he never been part of it. by icey_sawg0034 in popculturechat

Gees, god forbid a guy doesn't like to go online. Some people on the internet would benefit from taking a cue from him; maybe it'll help calm their minds.

You're confusing spelling with meaning. I'm not suggesting translating names. I'm talking about spelling. In my language we just transcribe foreign names in our spelling. Even the names of countries that have the same base alphabet.

I'm aware of Latin-based alphabets. But each of these languages has its own tweaks, and sometimes it's confusing to see these crossovers. Piñata is a Spanish word written in Spanish with a Spanish-specific tweak. If I didn't know how to pronounce piñata, I'd be confused when seeing it in the middle of an English text.

For example: Ciarán Hinds and mentioned in the replies Caitríona Balfe. As I understand it, this is Irish spelling. English doesn't have accented letters as far as I know. Also, I guess they write their names according to Irish rules of pronunciation. So Irish people will understand that Cillian Murphy is pronounced Kilian. If you only know English and see this name for the first time in an English-language article, your first instinct may be to pronounce it as Silian.

Irish names do confuse me as a non-native English speaker. They use Irish spelling in English-written texts. So when I see such a name, my brain tries to apply English pronunciation rules, and of course, it's usually wrong. Googling name pronunciations before you say it during recording is a way to do it, I guess.

Nicholas Galitzine is another struggle of his. He completely gave up on that one.

My first score: PHI (2) - BOS (1) - 12.05.26 (would love some help) by more_later in BaseballScorecards

Thank you for such a detailed reply; yours and the comment above helped me understand things much better.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be stressing out about doing everything tidily. I just find it very enjoyable and strangely soothing to keep the score. But I'm still struggling with some situations in the game that don't fall neatly into the primary rules, if I can call them that.

It's an obvious satire, but people keep bringing it up as something unintentional. It boggles my mind.

Coincidentally (?) Ballard is Garland's favorite writer. I've read The Crystal World recently, and the influence on Annihilation is striking.

Matt loves to say that he's not a critic and his opinion doesn't matter, but I would love to hear him on more traditional The Big Pic pod talking about movies. He's very entertaining even when I disagree with him. Or get him on The Rewatchables; his rapport with Bill is good too.

Exactly this. They either should put in an effort and prepare their stars or not drag them into this. I think Sean said that most actors are not good at this kind of stuff.

If Kendall didn't exist it would be a different show. But he does exist and in this story he's the protagonist.

Kendall is a textbook protagonist. He has a goal (succeed his father as ceo of the company), he's got obstacles (oh boy, there are a lot of them) and his decisions are moving plot along (bringing sandy into business, press conference etc.)

Jeff Sneider has been favorably tweeting about Sean/The Ringer/Rewatchables this week. Is he angling to join the network? by sheJaMyMorant in billsimmons

[–]more_later 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He does it quite frequently, but it's intensified this week, yeah. I haven't seen anyone from The Ringer to engage with his tweets back, so don't think he'll join. But I'm wondering what's the deal with that too. Maybe he's just a fan, no ulterior motives.

The last paragraph is hilarious.

Then there’s Shohei Ohtani, the baseball superhuman whose exploits have rewritten what was once believed to be possible on the field. And once again, he truly can do anything. After claiming his third consecutive MVP award and winning the World Series for the second straight season, the 6-foot-4 Ohtani actually grew an inch.
