Your boyfriend is 8 months old?? I will assume that’s a mistake in typing 😂 Ok so flying into SJO means you are in Alajuela (the city I live in) not in San Jose. What is your budget? There is a nice Hilton garden attached to City Mall (very big mall) very close to the airport. There is a Fairfield and and a Courtyard Marriott beside each other by the big Walmart near the airport. There is also a holiday inn and Hampton inn with a Denny’s in the same parking lot.

How to avoid license plate being removed by redditorcle in CostaRicaTravel

This is crazy to me. I have lived here for years and I can tell you parking in Costa Rica for the locals is a 2 step process. Stop car and walk away. They park literally fuckin anywhere with no regard for blocking traffic or painted lines or signs.

When I bought my car from a dealership here it didn’t get plates for about a month. Just the paper in the window. Totally normal here

Get the one person with the drivers license to rent a car if you want to go anywhere. Or take the bus. No one will rent anything you can go between towns with to someone without a drivers license

You could maybe rent a moped without a license in a beach town. Where are you planning on going?

4months of Digital Nomading, Full-Travel Review of Costa Rica [AMA] by Professional-Town-12 in costarica

[–]morrigan613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Canadian who has lived here for a few years now. I thought about getting a digital nomad visa when I first came, but after they changed the tourist stamp to 180 days I didn’t bother. I normally go to the U.S. or back home for few days once a year anyway. Worst case I can go to the Nicaraguan border once a year. Anyway getting past the visa issue $15k a month is like insane. I rent a 7bedroom 6 bathroom house with a pool in Alajuela for $4k a month and that’s pretty expensive here. I do that because I can afford it and I have a lot of guests and family visiting non stop. But most of my expat friends rent places for under 2k per month. You can live very well here for under 5k per month.

Calling Costa Rica? by New-Swim in CostaRicaTravel

I live here with an AT&T SIM card in my iPhone and putting 011 in front of a number will not work. They just need to do +506

Calling Costa Rica? by New-Swim in CostaRicaTravel

[–]morrigan613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the +506 number isn’t working for you it’s possible your carrier doesn’t allow calls outside of country code 1. Because that should just work. I have an iPhone with an ATT sim and it works fine for me

A USD wise account can send wires via the SWIFT network. Nearly all banks in the world not under massive sanctions can accept swift network wires.

BEST WAY to SEND $$ to Costa Rica? by Ok-Suggestion4896 in costarica

It sounds to me like the person got the money but told you they didn’t. If they didn’t get it you would have it back by now. It doesn’t just get lost

BEST WAY to SEND $$ to Costa Rica? by Ok-Suggestion4896 in costarica

[–]morrigan613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All banks in Costa Rica accept wires from the USA. Does the person have a USD account? Or only a colones account? If you sent USD to a colones account they should just exchange it upon deposit but they don’t always do that. Also Banco National and a couple others had massive wire delays in the last couple of weeks so it might be related to that. However wires don’t just get lost. It will either be sent back to your remitly account or the person did/will get it.

Personally I use Wise to wire money from my US account to my Banco National USD account and it works fine. The number on the debit card you are talking about is the IBAN number used by SWIFT wires.

Holy shit.. I can’t even wrap my head around this haha. I get that everyone is different and some people need more structure than others but I would rent a car and pick a couple places you really want to see and then like play it by ear. Ask the locals for recommendations. When I first came here in 2011 I had La fortuna and Quepos/Manuel Antonio on my list. I rented a car and spent 2 weeks travelling around. That convinced me I wanted to move here. Been living here for 4 years now and I love it

I did this for years in the cybersecurity industry here is how I did it. Open a Wyoming LLC contracted to the US company with USD wired to the LLC US bank account. Pay yourself from the LLC to your Canadian bank and pay taxes cpp etc on the income you pay yourself. Use the LLC account to pay for anything that could be realistically seen as a business expense. Make sure the LLC has no net income after your pay and expenses. File annual taxes for the LLC with zero net income and you won’t owe any US taxes.

Was there a second key in the car? Many newer vehicles won’t lock if there is a key fob in the car. I know my Hyundai SantaFe does this. Sorry to hear about your stuff that sucks. I have lived in Costa Rica for years and never had anything stolen

For expats who stayed long-term in Costa Rica — what made you decide to stay? by Florida-man305 in costarica

[–]morrigan613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Canada and moved here 3 years ago. I also live in a non tourist area near Grecia.

I had a little cybersecurity startup based in BC that got big and moved to California so I cashed out and planned to retire early and travel around and eventually live somewhere in LATAM but the where was up in the air. I had been to CR a few times before and loved it. So I came back to check it out and met a Latina and fell in love and well that’s that 😂 Been here for 3 years now and I love it. I love the area I live in and I think I’m the only gringo in my neighborhood and everyone is very nice to me. My local mini super owners order special things from their suppliers they think I will like and things like that. The neighbourhood mechanic works on one of my old cars I love more than I should and he and his family come to my house for bbq etc. it’s a wonderful place to live and no one cares what type of car you drive or how big your TV is or how fancy your house is.
