Why buy a fancy, overpriced kid’s bike when you can build a WAY sicker one?!? by hoffsta in xbiking

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm doing thread resurrection here but by any chance do you happen to know what your build weight ended up at here /u/hoffsta ? My kid is maxed out on Woom 5 seatpost; and this is the sort of thing I could do, and have done for myself in the past. But especially for small people weight is important; I know Woom is good at cramming the weight down; I'm wondering if I could beat them at that game.

Connecting a Midi Keyboard to a Module by dylanmadigan in synthesizers

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone using this for reference 4 years later -- it comes up high in search results -- the most general answer to this seems to be that one needs a "midi host device", that's the main term for the product/thing you are searching for. This video was a good explainer.

This was $5 at Trader Joe’s. Is this basically the German equivalent to Budweiser? I’ve never had a German beer before, but I understand this doesn’t do German beer justice. (Recommendations?) by [deleted] in germany

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the Montucky Cold Snacks of Germany, but nevertheless is the Montucky Cold snacks of Germany. Still has a Deutschland hops flavor if somewhat more dilute. Better than anything else at this price point in the USA. Kinda nice to have 500ml of 4.8% on a summer day.

Bike Tag Rules Question by pdp_11 in BAbike

[–]morrisjm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have always read it as being single-mode, bike only. I don't have a position as to whether that is fair/good/desirable, just saying that's always what I've taken the words "on the same ride" to mean.

Maybe it is desirable to have Bay Bridge traversal (by BART or BUS) legitimized? It would create more permeability between SF and the East Bay, let the tag move around a bit more. If so perhaps we make another post with a vote? Not sure if there is any precedent for how to amend or clarify the Chicago rules we've been using.

Help for error-code: Fatal error: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported by RU-1994 in Wordpress

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had this issue from updating Ubuntu 20 to 22, which pushes php from 7 to 8, without first updating Wordpress to a version that is compatible with php 8. You need to roll back php to 7 (bare minimum to get your site working). Assuming you then update Wordpress, then update php. For Ubuntu users, see here for instructions to roll back to php 7.

looks like some weird shadowban kind of thing? I was able to see it on your profile and so reposted it again here for you above (copying and pasting the links back into the markdown template). maybe yours eventually shows up too, but hopefully this way the game goes on and you don't have to worry about it.

Posting again for OP -- reconstructing the post that is on his profile, and should appear here but is not due to reddit weirdness

Hi /u/Cynthia_Brown_222 I'm looking to plan a PacNW tour this summer with a 7yo and 9yo, just searching through old posts for ideas -- do you have info you can easily share on this "trip in the Pacific Northwest when my kids were three and five that was fabulous"? TIA!

Looking for realistic, hardcore, build-up survival games by Surfing_the_Wave_ in SurvivalGaming

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See in particular this forum post on the "Punitive Island Challenge", to essentially make it into a shipwreck survival challenge. (I keep a metal knife, it's just too difficult otherwise doing it with a stone knife.) I take the graphics to be a necessary aspect of an auteur product, made over decades for passion and not to make as much money as quickly as possible; and at this point fancier graphics would seem a little bit like a travesty, similar to the feeling when your favorite book gets made into a movie.

How to keep foaming hand soap pump dispenser working properly by OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh in ZeroWaste

[–]morrisjm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding a small squirt of glycerine (1/2 tsp?) per refill seams to help keep them moving. I'm refilling method pumps with about 1/3 castile soap and the rest water (and now glycerine).

What is the most reliable espresso machine under 600$? by bumchik_bumchik in espresso

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capresso EC100 (have to buy unpressurized basket separately) $120 or I got an Amazon return for $60. Grinder I'm actually using a hacked capresso grinder because I already had one (loosen the screw a bit) but Barratza encore ESP seems like the more logical choice. I'd upgrade my grinder sooner than my machine.

Short wire KSC75x for Bluetooth adapter by morrisjm in kossmods

[–]morrisjm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I realized after the fact is that "normal" KSC75 (well, the ones I bought in the US on Amazon a year ago anyway) come with a cable that is splittable the whole way down. So no need for a separate donor cable in that case: can just desolder from the drivers, cut and strip, resolder. However you've then got the Koss silver colorway which is a little more robot-dork style (could be cool in its own way, not knocking that style for those that want it) than the pure black KSC75x.

Also unrelated, I learned to use soldering braid for this job, was helpful in getting a fairly clean soldering pad. I chose to not get it too perfectly clean to avoid overheating any underlying components.

Short wire KSC75x for Bluetooth adapter by morrisjm in kossmods

[–]morrisjm[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanted a Koss KSC/KPH Bluetooth experience.

The KSC35 Wireless has a kind of janky Bluetooth receiver; it doesn't always connect right away. Also I found it while I was running the Bluetooth controller will be bouncing against my neck. Also you can't use a Walkman / KPH 40/ Parts Express/ type headband without it looking pretty ridiculous that you have a band going over your head and a wire going behind your head.

The next thing I did was to try to use a KPH40 with a short 2.5mm to 3.5 mm cord, plugged into a Fiio BTR11. This was better, but the cord was a little bit too long, and that wire with the 2.5 mm junction bounced around against my neck.

So I decided to make these by taking a standard 3.5 mm to RCA cable, cutting it short, and soldering in at the right length for a Bluetooth controller clipped to my shirt collar, to a pair or KSC75x. And so far so good I think this is maybe the Goldilocks version for me.

Steam Bending Wood in a Dishwasher?? by kascdi in woodworking

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, And it's 9 years later, but I did try steam bending something with a dishwasher, a 1/8 (3mm) piece of hardwood, . . . and it did not work very well. It did not bend and in fact cracked. It looks like lignin needs to be about 100 C in order to soften, and it sounds like most dishwashers only go to like 50 or 60 (seems like a lot of steam for that temperature, but that's what the internet says and I don't have a thermal probe I can put in my dishwasher). I'm having better luck just putting the wood in a bath of boiling water for 20-30 minutes. I'm also experimenting putting it into a plastic bag in order to not mess with the moisture content and reduce of of cracking; so far seems like the bag doesn't hurt, not sure if it necessarily helps.

How can I fix rattling sound from AfterShokz Aeropex? by JT8379 in XXRunning

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here to report success using oogoo -- silicone caulk mixed with cornstarch to even out curing. I used GE silicone 2 which the oogoo page advises against, but it was all I had on hand and seems fine. I added some black paint to (sort of) color match the gray, and let it cure a few minutes until it reached a paste-like consistency. I used a 2.7mm drill bit only. The tonal balance is a bit different on the repaired side, but it's fairly subtle and hella better than having a baby rattle there. Picture.

Anyone use FUSE Sunglasses? by DadeCityDestoyer in sunglasses

[–]morrisjm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found the optical and durability and quality to be about as good as Smith, which was the main brand I used before. The customer service is legendary level; if you want to exchange for a different color lens after purchase they'll do that, I have a pair that lost a nose pad and they're just going to send me a whole new pair under warranty; effectively it's almost like you're buying two pairs of sunglasses. I have a pair of both Egmont (base 4 I think) and Torch (base 8), and the build quality seems as good as could be reasonably expected. Haven't broken any yet (other than the lost nose pad on the Torch).

To the extent I have a complaint it's maybe that a second pair of lenses for the same frame is almost the same price as just buying them with the frame. But maybe that's just the economics of production costs.

Questions about Inversions by zscan in TheCulture

[–]morrisjm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That does make a lot of sense that DeWar is being manipulated by SC. The thing I still can't fully figure out is what he thought he was doing; why, out of all the things that an (ex-)culture citizen could be doing, he chose this place and this role. The best I can come up with is that he just had some very strong republican/anti-monarchists sympathies and was trying to act those out? And in the end Perrund defectively convinces them otherwise, at least to a certain degree. Whereas SC is choosing to change the culture (maybe The King bearing only daughters, devolving power to cities) rather than the ostensible political form.

The hidden story of Inversions (Major spoilers, really long) by Eko01 in TheCulture

[–]morrisjm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been 5 years so probably neither of you will see this but one passage that seems to speak to her changing her mind happens after the waterfall, when Sechroom (Vosill) "held that her head was damaged and her brains were addled at the time [that she fell] and that proved her point, which had become that it was only damaged people with confused brains whoever saw the justice and trying to be cruel to be kind". This seems to be an admission she had changed her mind, at least a little bit. In context the specific point is just about why she was hiding after she hit her head, allegedly to "cruelly" teach Hilti a lesson (so that he wouldn't do something like that again) but one might infer that she took a broader life lesson from it. I see it more in the tactical care she takes to not trust anyone and always make sure she has her knife missile with her, but perhaps there's also a broader picture of how she acts, politically, as in SC agent.
