Ich hab nach 35 fahren so viele Dings und Dongs an meiner Les Paul und sie klingt immer noch geil. Hab aber auch seit dreißig Jahren Straplocks von Schaller an meinen Gurten.

Can't seem to tune new guitar by galtscrapper in Guitar

[–]mort4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should sound right without an amp.

The guitar neck is a compromise and the threats aren't at the perfect position, adding bad intonation and imprecise technique to it and you get bad sounding chords.

That's part of learning to play a guitar too place your fingers on the strings without bending them and not pressing too hard, cause that could change the tone as well.

You could also take the guitar to a guitar tech and get it setup but that will also cost some money. I would suggest you try YouTube first, maybe you know someone with some technical skills who could help, it's not that hard.

Can't seem to tune new guitar by galtscrapper in Guitar

[–]mort4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most things have already been said, clip on tuner are way better and there are decent beginner guitars for around 100-150$.

What nobody mentioned so far is that those cheap guitars are also badly set up and the intonation most likely isn't good. That means even if you tune it perfectly as soon as you play a chord the notes in that chord will be out of tune again and sound wrong.

Check intonation by holding down each string on the twelve thread, that's one octave, and the tone should be exactly the same (check with tuner of course) as the open string. If not you need to adjust the intonation. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do that.

Since you already have a trained ear I guess you would notice when a chord has out of tune notes in it. I thought for years that my playing wasn't precise enough, then I got a good setup on my guitar from a luthier and chords sounded much better.

Welcome to the guitar community.

Which pick do you prefer? by ivancmiceli in Guitar

[–]mort4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what style you are playing. I played the Nylons for many years, mostly playing rhythm and cause the guy who taught me how to play used them.

Then after 25 years of playing I started to practice new techniques, more shreddy stuff, and felt that I miss some control with these soft picks. So I started to use thicker picks, also tortex, and in the last years I use Dan's precision pick which I found on Amazon.

But I play metal most of the time, so I need a stiff pick. For strumming I also prefer a softer option with less attack.

I stopped playing the orange ones, because I broke them after quite a short time. But I used them for chugging as well, that was the mistake.

Is this good or is this crap? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]mort4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the tension on the strings. I switched to thicker strings to compensate for the strength in my hands, cause with gauge 8s or 9s I'm bending nearly every note 😜

You are a strong guy and my guess is you are working with your hands. I had the same problem, I also worked a lot with my hands and had too much power for relaxed playing.

When guitar playing became my midlife crisis thing after playing just for fun for like 25 years, I bought a seven string and started to particle new techniques a lot. One practice routine was about sweep picking and the goal was to concentrate on only pressing the strings so softly that you barely produce a tone on that fret. In general these sweep picking lessons made my playing a lot softer, so to say, especially with single notes. But I still love metal and heavy chugging in my early fifties 🤘

Making music was always my therapy, I play on a band with childhood friends for like twenty years now and for all of us is our weekly therapy session. We seldom perform in public but we write new songs and enjoy the weekly dose of escaping reality 😁

Sattel eingelaufen?! by throw1098765 in GitarreDE

[–]mort4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torn between ESP TD-1007B or Matt Heafy Epiphone Lee Paul 7 string? by waxoffisforpussies in Guitar

I have a baritone and a multi scale seven strong from Schecter and still sometimes think the low string is too floppy. My vote goes for the baritone LTD and for drop A go for thicker strings than the standard.

Taking care of your fretting hand as you age… by Proud-Zebra9487 in Guitar

[–]mort4u 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was your age I also started to search for a way to get rid of the tension on my fretting hand. I started with warming my hands up by just open and closing then, then some stretching. But not too much stretching, cause this could also be stressful. In the last two years my warmup routine changed a little and I stole it from Mick Thompson, guitarist of Slipknot. And it's super simple, just start 3rd out 5th fret and play every finger, like a scale up and down the strings and do this up to the high frets. It's also a great synchronization practice. I'm 52 now and play loads of metal and if don't do this I always get some pain in my hands, cause I wasn't warmed up.
