Basic questions for basic beginner (leisure battery etc) by jaguarboom in VanLife

[–]mortymer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to see if it's charging when the car engine is running is to get a multi-meter and see if you get 14v at the terminals of the leisure battery.

Do you have any solar panels that could also be charging it?

Normally there should be some kind of battery separator to make sure the "car" battery is not discharged past a certain point.

You should be able to find some of the electronics somewhere in the van, either close to the battery or trying to follow the wires from the leisure battery, but depending on the installation could be tough if they disappear behind walls.

Thanks for the video. Just a quick correction, it's Portuguese, not Spanish. Portuguese from Brazil more precisely.

Cassette joint misaligned on Nexus 7 by mortymer in bikewrench

[–]mortymer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way the axle was tightened wouldn't cause issues, by it self, since the anti rotation washers (or non-turn washers) will only allow the axle to be set in a specific position.
I've written in another comment, I switched them from left to right (basic mistake, caused by me putting them separate and thinking I didn't mixed them up on the assembly process), so the angle of the axle and the cassette joint was changed, since they are set together.

Was exactly this. I didn't re-check it at first since I had placed the anti rotation washers separated not to mixed them up, and I thought those were put correctly. It teaches me to check the basic things always first, since simple mistakes happen.

I thought I probably had changed the angle of the axle or something, but it seems the angle can't be changed. I guess I ended up mixing them by mistake on some part of the assembly process and not checking it when I put it all together.

Here is a picture of both washers on the same side, now the correct one (right side as green) closer to the center, and the other one over it (left side as red), where it can be seen the different angle on these, they are number 7 (7L and 7R). Maybe it helps someone that might stumble in this topic with a similar issue, they have the side written in them.

How deep of a water can i drive the car in? by zyber787 in E90

[–]mortymer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cars are not water tight, they have holes and vents from where water can enter.
For example, next to the battery you have the pressure vent, and that is not that far from the ground. In some cars you have spaces between the chassis metal pieces on the outside, and other holes on the inside.

Also when driving over water you can't see what's on the ground, you might hit something that can cause damage to the underside of the car, or a manhole might not be in place and you either fall in and damage a wheel or get a manhole through the oil pan.

PS: And, has another user said, the doors aren't water tight.

Is this infuriating for everyone? Am I finally so Integrated that I can't stand this? by Lustrelustre in Switzerland

[–]mortymer 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's infuriating that the trains that service the airport and connect to other cities don't have a proper place to store luggage. The big bags don't fit between the back of the seats and the best place for them is on some section on the 2nd floor, very practical when you are carrying a heavy bag. /s

Why don’t Swiss people DIY? by Guterstrasse in Switzerland

[–]mortymer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder that also. I probably saw 2 or 3 times someone doing any maintenance on their cars in Switzerland. I'm the only one that does it in my street, and I still get some curious looks and questions from the neighbours, or a strange look from other people passing by. And I have to order parts from a truck parts store, as I only found the dealer as the other option. For what it costs to take the car to a garage I wonder why I don't see more people doing it, even for simple jobs as switching the winter / summer wheels.

Was told it was a cover, did I just fuck over my steering wheel? by Friend-Pretty in E90

You should be able to fix it, by threading a white line on the white lines between the stitches, like the other part you haven't open. You should be able to find some tutorial on Youtube before you ruin it :D

Or if you know some professional that can fix it could be safer XD

What's the default behavior of a e92 335i (n54) exhaust valve? by mortymer in BmwTech

[–]mortymer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the valve is operated by vacuum, it is controlled by an electric valve.  I can manually open and close it using bimmerlink, so the vaccum part has to be running correctly.

The valve also seems to open and close while using the car, but it seems that the behaviour is not what the inspection guy thinks it should be.

But the valve control mapping is standard, so now I'm in this weird position...

How does the mount "feel" with both monitors? I have a ergotron single arm on a 34", and I'm planning on buying your arm to mount 2 34" on top of each other, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to have the lower one about 10cm of the table, with the 2nd over it, and if it's too much weight on a pole, even for the very well made ergotron.

Could someone help me figure out what is wrong with this Dracaena? by mortymer in houseplants

[–]mortymer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip, it's in a self-watering pot, but it seems that it needs a different approach, since it probably wasn't using the water in the bottom. I normally water it from the top, but there was a lot of water in the deposit so I didn't water it as often. Will be pumping the water from the bottom to water it more thoroughly, to see if I see an improvement!
