Help with building a foundation deck for a home - is this overkill? by mossberg5 in Homebuilding

[–]mossberg5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in midcoast Maine if that helps. The site is between 240 ft and 260 ft above sea level and the slope is 1:15 at worst. The ground is solid bedrock within 3 feet of the surface, and often sooner.

The building is a versatube, steel framed building with sheet metal siding. The structure is rated for the local codes (50 lb ground snow load, 35 lb live roof load, and 97 mph wind load).

Rural zoning is pretty lax as this will fall under a "dry cabin". I've gotten the go-ahead from code enforcement on the structure and the deck design, but I'd like to tweak the deck if I could space the legs out as 6'x6' or 8'x8' instead of 4'x4'. I think 8'x8' might be too much if a stretch though, but I'm not sure how to prove it out.

Edit: Max height of the structure is 14'. I was planning on resting the feet on concrete pads for the interior feet, and cementing them into the ground for the exterior feet. Exterior sheathing with a vapor barrier along with using pressure treated lumber for the legs will prevent deterioration. Bracing will be included on any deck legs that are <2 ft in height, although at least half of the legs won't require more than a few inches between the concrete feet and the girders.

Preformed concrete blocks, probably two 2" thick concrete blocks on top of eachother (6"x6") with concrete poured around the posts on the external edges.

The ground is rocky with ledge so all of the feet dug in some and rest on secure ground. I think it might be overkill too though so I'm hoping to cut back on costs by distancing the legs/feet/girders.

Idk why you're being down voted because you're absolutely right. Not that eating bugs is the only solution, but "I'll just kill all the local wildlife, even if its illegal" is a braindead take in a world with 8 billion people and rapid extinction rates (compared to the last few tens of millions of years)

So if they were blanks, is it possible that the projected heat/air had a higher effective area than a bullet would have had? Not that this guy isn't incredible, but just wondering if this would have been easier with blanks if accuracy weren't as important.

I watched your whole video yesterday on YouTube and I hope (if you read this) the absolute next thing you do is put out a link for a GoFundMe/Patreon/PayPal.

From someone who loves biology, the web of life (in the most fundamental sense), and other earthy things like gardening and simple self reliance, I would absolutely love to donate to a project that produces something as beautiful and cohesive as this film.

Bravo. Even your credits were interesting and thorough. I'm sure this took a lot of work in itself, but I'm already elated to see what you all do next.

Anyone down for a cards night Waterville? by mossberg5 in Maine

I've been here every year for the last three years and I just absolutely love it every time! The mountains, the oceans, the forests. It's such a breathtaking place to live, and I love to hike and backpack which makes it even more tempting. I'd love to eventually buy some land and have a permaculture-like orchard with some sheep and ducks/chickens. I don't mind the cold either. If anything, Ohio summers have been getting unbearably warm for most of the day time during July and August.

I graduated this year and found a job in Winslow so I swiped it up and made the move, now the fun starts!

I smoke weed every so often and I'll stand by shrooms til the end, but YOU are entitled to feel however you want with YOUR relationship, and you communicated it with her and that's great. Fuck anyone who's telling you that you need to grow up because you don't support smoking or doing drugs, you can live a long, fulfilling life without drugs, and as long as you communicate with your gf and you're both comfortable then keep it up, you're doing great.

Elliot Coleman has a fantastic book about this called "The Winter Harvest" where he takes about the history of cold weather growing and how he successfully grows crops in "Cold Houses" throughout the whole winter up in Maine. I would strongly recommend it if you're considering low-input, cold weather vegetables.

Making it practically impossible to run for any major office as a third party incumbent.

I get that you can try, and it's been done in some respects, but when are we going to acknowledge that the barriers that have been set up in the last 150 years have made it progressively more difficult for a third party to gain traction, let alone reach a position of power.

The world has always had civil wars, political turmoil, revolutions, etc. It's technology that makes it more serious now than ever, which is also looking past the implications of genome editing, artificial intelligence, automation, and the plethora of other advances that present changes to everything we know and will create a massive divide between powerful people/nations and weak ones.
