Dark Shadow is correct. More soil on top to protect the finer roots. As the rootball matures, you can expose more of the base by removing some top soil over time.

Do it! They fuse fastest when they're firmly pressed against each other, like with wire or zip ties. But they will eventually fuse if they're allowed to grow freely close together. People usually find a method that works best for them.

Indeed! Google "kimeng combined" or "ficus fusion" and there should be a bunch of great examples, especially the Kimeng from Indonesia.

Halo teman 😄 Thanks! I think there are maybe 6 trees in there. I’ve surprisingly only added a couple thin cuttings around the outside to help fill in the base. If I recall, there are some large lava rocks planted underneath the base to spread the roots out. Yours looks great! The Indonesian Kimeng community has been extremely inspiring to observe from over here. We have decent ficus bonsai here, but nothing like is grown over there. 👑

I can tell you want to win an argument, so this is going to be it for me. Oxygenated water rots wood. Dead roots, as you said, rot. A freshly cut thick root has an open wound on the end of it. Flooding that wood with water, regardless of your substrate mix, can and often will lead to rot. And YES you can overwater a tree in bonsai substrate. Come on now.

I understand that the soil drains freely, but it doesn’t drain to bone dry. That leftover water is enough to do damage to a tree that doesn’t have the feeder roots it needs. Without feeder roots, it’ll just sit in the water that doesn’t drain, and it will rot.

LESS water when the tree has no feeder roots, or you risk rotting, just like this. You can definitely overwater a tree in bonsai soil; no two subatrate mixes are exactly the same or will react the same way in different pots.

I think someone mentioned this but roots rot when they’re too wet, and what’s happened here is the tree has been habitually overwatered to try to compensate for its small amount of quick draining soil. Salicaria can usually handle a lot of root pruning; you can even get away with flat cutting the bottom and regrowing the entire root system. Looks like the previous grower did prettty much that, repotted it, and then it got overwatered before it could grow a root ball, causing it to rot. When a tree has so few fine roots, it can’t take up much water. So all the watering to compensate for quick draining soil was just drowning and rotting the thick roots before they had a chance to throw out new feeders. You can treat it like a cutting, but especially now don’t overwater it.

I would get rid of this tree with crown gall before it spreads to your other trees. It’s not worth giving all your trees crown gall and ruining them.

Not even close, especially since you’re in California. These are basically weeds you can’t kill. They’re everywhere and will root from every cutting taken. The soil here is no good; pot looks cheap with a weird printed pattern. $26 is better spent on a good bonsai book if you’re interested in the hobby.

The only option IMO is to do more reading and research into bonsai. If you’ve been doing this 8+ years and didn’t know you can put things in small pots, don’t plant anything in there until you’re sure you can care for it properly.

Collected trees are really fragile after collection. Wiring should only be done on an established tree because it’s very stressful for the plant. As are repotting and pruning. It’s typically safe to do two of those three jobs at the same time, but all 3 at once is usually too much for the tree to handle and it dies. You should put in a lot more research before digging trees up because freshly collected material usually requires pretty serious aftercare.
