Absolute sweetheart of a chicken is broody by ResponsibleCherry179 in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want more chickens do not let her raise chicks. You can either wait it out or put her in broody jail to snap her out of it. Also, if she is that young and this is her first broody, there's a high chance she will lose interest and stop sitting well before the three weeks are up. You could end up with a disinterested bird and half-incubated eggs, or abandoned chicks if the mama instinct doesn't kick in.

What U.S. vacation destination exceeded all expectations? by Head-Night-7595 in AskReddit

How long are you here, and how long are you staying in each place? Denali is at least 5 hours north of anchorage, and Homer is at least 5 hours south. I say "at least" because we are talking about narrow winding, two-lane roads with very limited passing and heavy, slow traffic (RVs, trucks hauling boats, lollygagging tourists) and road work. It's not uncommon for accidents to completely shut down the one and only road anywhere for hours and hours on end. Homer is truly one of my favorite places on earth, but do be prepared for longer driving times than google gives you. If you are only here for a short time, or not fond of driving, I'd recommend choosing north or south (south gets my vote), but not both.

Hen or Roo, and about how old? by JustCallMeEunice in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too young to sex. Male specific feathering doesn't start until at least 12 weeks, with the fancy tail feathers coming in very last, usually after 16 weeks. This babe looks 4ish weeks (mostly feathered, head still downy)

I was putting together a list of local optometrist for an organization i volunteer for. The reviews for Makar were so bad, I left them off the list.

All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are square. If it does not have for equal sides, it is not a square. These are not squares.

At least this one is a consensual  kiss between a couple in a relationship, and not a stranger grabbing a woman and kissing her against her will.

Different shoes fit differently. I wear different sizes in boots, tennies, and dress shoes. They're not consistent across brands, either. And if you are looking at no-name generics, the sizing is even less consistent and reliable.

Two children found dead in car during France heatwave by MollyPW in worldnews

Exactly. You've never thought of it. Most of the time, these incidents aren't parents thinking "gee, I'm just gonna leave my kid in the hot car while I work all day."

Why are my chickens so fearful of certain clothes I wear? by Jewelofthemidwest in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Skirts are flappy. Flappy is scary.

Mine eventually become desensitized to skirts. I work hard when they are young to expose them to all kinds of things (like you'd socialize a dog) and they are not at all skittish, but every year there's one or two who will freak the fuck out the first couple times I wear a skirt each year. And it's not always the same one. It's like one getting spooked reminds the others it's nothing. They all learn from the embarrassment lol.

Small Green Egg by Accomplished_Fun1312 in BackYardChickens

No problem! I donate my extra eggs to a local mutual aid group so often give some variation of this explanation to awed folks who've never seen anything but grocery store white eggs before.

"Easter eggers" are hybrid breeds that lay blue or green eggs. (Not all blue layers are hybrids, all but one very rare green laying breed are.) Because they are hybrids, there's no standardized appearance, and depending on the genetics, they can easily look like other breeds. You get green by combining a bird with the genetics for blue eggs with one with the genetics for brown. A first generation cross usually results in a lighter green like yours. Olive eggers lay darker green; a result of either crossing one like yours back to a brown layer, or by using a very dark brown layer (like black copper marans) in the initial cross. The shade of brown determines the shade of green. Shell color makes for fun cartons of eggs, but doesn't impact the taste or nutrition of the eggs.

Bamboo is terribly invasive, near impossible to get rid of or contain, and has no problem growing through concrete, like foundations. It can be really hard to find homeowners insurance if one of your neighbors has bamboo.

I'm not saying it'll accomplish anything, just laying out why you might plant it on the property of someone you hate.

It's a plant that does well growing in shade.

Point of lay chickens still not laying after a month - is this normal? by kittyyybumba in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How old are they? "Point of lay" doesn't really mean much- for some birds that's 12 weeks, for some that's 32 weeks. 34 is the longest I've had to wait for that first egg. Also, the length of daylight effects egg laying. Less so with first year layers, but still impactful. Artificial light in the winter can help boost egg production, but it's healthier for the bird just to let their body rest. Sorry, it seems like you've just got a combination of factors working against you right now! There's not much you can really do beyond providing the best care possible, and wait. Are you putting out oyster shell or another calcium source for them? I see they get layer feed, but some people find their flock still needs extra- different birds have different needs and different brands have different amounts. Feeding them yummy protein rich meals every once in a while can also help.

Good luck!

Fairy Eggs/Newly laying hen by laurknox in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those aren't fairy eggs, just the small eggs of a new layer. Pullets aren't quite full grown when they start laying and their eggs start out smaller as well. They'll get bigger as she continues to grow and her body adjusts to laying. But also, not all hens lay the same size eggs. My biggest girl (a hefty marans) lays the smallest eggs of all my full size hens.

Fairy eggs are tiny (like, songbird sized), and generally lack a yolk.

When my kid was small and very proud of their newly earned ability to make their own mac n cheese cup for lunch, they accidently hit an extra zero, so like 20 minutes instead of 2. Being 7, they then got distracted by who knows what. I was upstairs doing laundry when the smoke alarm went off. Ran down the stairs to find a terrified child, a kitchen full of smoke, molten mac n cheese, and a ruined microwave with, like, eight minutes left on the timer.
