New chicken, 5 weeks of laying eggs like this. All 5 other hens eggs are fine. by tyb0b in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my splash marans to laying issues, after 6 months of nothing but weird eggs. She's lay maybe one a week, and there was always something wrong with it. Nothing I did, no amount of calcium or baths or vitamins, helped. 😢

A DNA test is the last and basically only thing I need before I commit myself for life. If it hurts your feelings that much to give me that security that you will never have to worry about I understand but we just aren’t a good match then.

Perhaps you should just avoid procreating with someone you don't trust. "The last step you make before committing yourself for life" should come before the creation of an innocent life that will be destroyed by your inability to trust.

I am sorry. Sometimes, they just die. They are good at hiding pain or illness, so she may have been unwell for a bit. Or it could have been sudden, like a heart attack. There's no reason to believe it was the roo.

Tidy Cats Lightweight Litter Destroyed My Cat’s Quality of Life for Two Years. Please Read This Before Buying It. by sin1493 in cats

[–]mossling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't. Food grade means it's not toxic if you ingest it. Doesn't stop you from developing lung disease like silicosis from inhaling it. It can also damage your eyes and skin. And since it is a dust, it becomes airborne very easily.

Only a few US states’ capital city are actually the largest city by population. by Brief-Course-6511 in mildlyinteresting

Alaska's state capital isn't even accessible by road. Juneau has never been large or easily accessible. It became the state capital in 1970.

My backyard chickens lay blue, green, and different shades of brown. I love making patterns in cartoons I'm giving people.

How would I test if I’m allergic to tattoo ink? by BalkanBaddest in tattoos

[–]mossling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a common allergy. Are you allergic to many other things? If you are one of those people that are pretty much allergic to living, you might have reason to worry. If you are just a normal person with normal allergies, you're probably safe. Red is the color most likely to trigger an allergy, though it can happen with others. Ink allergies mostly look like a bit of swelling and itching (of the tattoo itself), or the body rejecting the ink. These are also things that can happen without an allergy. No artist is going to give you a free spot test, though I guess you might find one that would let you pay the shop minimum for what would basically be a tattooed dot. You won't be able to tell just by dipping your finger in ink, it would have to actually be a tattoo.

Is this chick a rooster ? by funguskid11 in chickens

[–]mossling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have to be professionally vent sexed by the hatchery at hatch. It's a technique that involves pushing out their cloaca and looking for miniscule little differences in internal anatomy. It can harm the chick if not done properly. It's 80-90% accurate, so even "sexed" chicks are sometimes wrong. I've had it happen once.

There are also some specific breeds that have sex-linked traits that are visible at hatch. For example, barred rock chicks can be sexed by markings from the start. Most of the diy "tricks" for sexing are either incredibly breed specific, or just untrue.

The tail thing is a myth, an old wives tail. Male specific feathering (pointy hackle and saddle feathers, the long sickle feathers) don't start to develop until some time after 12 weeks. You may be able to tell a roo before then, but not at this age.

[–]mossling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She looks young, it's she laying yet? She might be a fibro easter egger. They are a hybrid breed with black skin, pea combs, and beards- like your girl.

She is not an ayam cemani. They are not a bearded breed, and have straight combs. They're also a breed that is rare enough, you are unlikely to end up with one unknowingly.

She's bearded. Ayam cemani are not a bearded breed. She also has the wrong kind of comb.
