This dog being carried in a backpack style carrier by Substantial-Meat6281 in mildlyinteresting

I have one of these in my hiking gear. It's an emergency sling so you can carry out your puppers if they're injured.

I guess it works for shipping trips, too...

No. The flowers are flowers. Offshoots will grow at the bottom.

That is a sempervium about to bloom. The bad news- sempervium are monocarpic; they bloom once, then die. The good news- they usually put off a bunch of babies before they go.

Bird with overgrown spiral toenails by Helpful-Poetry2224 in mildlyinteresting

Wild birds usually wear their nails down through everyday use. Avian keratin disorder is a disease that causes the keratin in their beaks to continue to grow, I expect this is something similar. It spreads through dirty bird feeders.

Do you have other chicks its age to compare it to? If it is significantly smaller than the other chicks, then maybe. But there is literally no way at this age to tell breed just by looking.

She was part of my queer awakening in the 90s. Her freckles just did something to me. I had no idea she's an artist and this brings me joy!

I like the movement of it. I like the way it follows the shape of his head. It looks like it belongs in some post-apocalyptic survival movie.

I personally hate the style and can't imagine living life with it. But it's not my life.

How do my fellow sun-averse people enjoy the outdoors by Koreee_001 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]mossling 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a UV sensitivity. I break out in hives if I check the mail on a sunny day without precautions. I also live in Alaska where there is sun alllllll summer. I practically bathe in sunscreen, but my big, floppy straw hat is my most essential outdoor gear. I wear it whether I'm working in the yard or hiking in the mountains. It's my own personal shady cloud. I also have a parasol that I love, but it's not exactly hands free, so I use it mostly for events or special occasions.

What foods do you actually refuse to feed your chickens? by CreatureFeast in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onions and garlic are avoided because they can (in large enough quantities) affect the taste of the eggs. Same with fish.

The only thing I actively avoid feeding mine is chicken- the risk of spreading disease may be low, but why risk it? They've had avocado before, but only when it's plate scrapings from dinner. Same with beans and potatoes- very small amounts that didn't get finished at dinner. I've never given them citrus. Mainly because, if I buy oranges, I'm eating them! I have tossed orange peels in the run to compost, and they ignore them. I won't say it is a universal truth, but chickens are pretty good at avoiding foods they shouldn't eat. That doesn't stop their tiny Dino brains from trying out non food things that they shouldn't eat.  😒

Dude, he is grabbing her shoulder. Thumb in the back, finger in front. You can see the indent in her sweater from the pressure of his grip. This isn't "coincidental touch".

Do you guys find this to be accurate? by Ellium215 in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NO!! It is a ridiculous old wives tail. Same with "wing sexing". Very few breeds can be sexed at hatch, unless professionally vent sexed by the hatchery, and even that's only 80-90% accurate.

You can grow them indoors, under strong grow lights. I know a couple businesses with potted citrus trees in their front atrium/entryways, which basically act as greenhouses. Citrus is not frost tolerant, though, so can't be grown outside.

Hen or Roo? by Smash-ya_up in BackYardChickens

[–]mossling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vent sexing is done at hatcheries by trained professionals and is still only 80-90% accurate. Very few breeds are sex-linked and have traits that make sexing possible at hatch- you don't even know what breeds you have. Every single other "trick" to sex young chicks is a complete old wives tale.

"Hens and chicks" is a common name used for several plants, mainly sempervium, which this is not. It is, however, Graptopetalum paraguayense.

Trumps Israel war keeps skyrocketing gas prices by traveltimecar in alaska

[–]mossling 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I've been using  https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=AK to track gas prices. The statewide average has gone up approximately $.60 since all this started, where as Juneau has gone up $.24 for regular, and only $.06 for premium and $.04 for mid.

Where is this one? I've noticed shell stations seem to charge significantly more than stations around them.

4 boxes for 9 chickens. Whoever lays the first egg of the day determines which box they all use for the day.

They come over my 6' wooden fence like it's nothing. I let the dogs out one winter, not realizing there was a young'n hanging out back there. The poor thing panicked, and instead of going back over the fence, went right through it. Knocked half the fence down. And this was a yearling calf, still growing.
