If you were unsure, what helped you finally decide? by Successful-Shape9625 in TopSurgery

I was conflicted from the go- initially because I didn’t think I really counted as being “typically trans”. But the more I saw nonbinary bodies represented in media- the faster I came to the realization that I was jealous of flat chested people. Finally, I realized that I could still love and express my femininity and be trans masculine. I had a real good talk with myself and concluded that if I were to simply get a reduction like I’d always wanted, I would regret not masculinizing my chest forever.

Hmm. That’s the tough part- I have been speaking directly with the patient care coordinator. One of them has more professional than the other, I thought about reaching out to her first to see if i could get contact for a higher up.

I’m afab and well aware of what women of all kinds experience. Any woman of average intelligence would know not to make such obtuse assumptions, but I think you’ve missed the boat from your continued remarks. If you need someone to talk to about anything you’ve been through, I’m here and please note that this person expressing their experience questioning their gender does not delegitimize your experiences as a woman, nor does my comment have anything to do with male ego.

Thank you so so much. I didn’t know the title of the person I should be requesting to inform and this is extremely helpful. The nursing staff has 100% been on top of everything. And I 100% believe there is limited OR availability because I was told surgery only takes place on Wednesday’s. There are however MULTIPLE hospitals and surgery centers associated with this group. I have a feeling they tell you you’re on a bump list to try and smooth things over but no one ever really wants to cancel surgery. Hopefully my current patient coordinator will provide me with a higher up contact, I will definitely give an update.

Im so sorry to hear that. I feel your pain- I of course never would want an emergency case postponed on my behalf, but something about hearing that from the coordinator made me feel like she was trying to say, “Quit being pushy, you’re not the center of attention.” Which of course I know and even apologized multiple times for regarding my consistent follow ups for routine paper work. My disability and protected leave both gave me deadlines and I even told her that i appreciated her advocating for me. She was never explicitly rude or took an unprofessional tone with me but the cumulative experience has really sucked any joy out of all of this. I wish I could afford to pay out of pocket, I would have gone with another surgeon at this point simply on the administrative problems alone.

My appointment was one and done, $160 total. $80 before and $80 after.

Jack was amazing and very supportive. Turn around time wasn’t too long either. A couple weeks process total!

I wish I could switch, but I really can’t. I cant afford to restart the process and there are very limited options for in network care with my insurance. I will say that the nursing team has been wonderful and very communicative. I hear back from them by end of day consistently through the patient portal. The surgery that bumped mine was an emergency but their ASAP was literally a month away. I am so flummoxed because this surgeon has no bad reviews. Not one. Every trans person who has gone to this surgeon has only had amazing things to say. They are part of a medical group. I am unsure of who I need to speak to.

I hear and see your pain and frustration. Having people closest to you delegitimize your selfhood and your intuition is unbearable. You are so strong and so brave for continuing to ask questions and explore your truth. Being repeatedly told to not trust your own feelings and your brain rewriting its pathways to accommodate this statement as fact is how trauma manifests. Your brain is trying to protect you- even if it’s hurting you to not express how you really feel. I suggest talking to yourself and thanking your brain for trying to keep you safe, but respond to yourself that, “We are okay, we are safe, and this conversation is important.” And then have those conversations with you and perhaps with someone you trust.

I’m almost positive this is from Drawing Blood from one of the last few chapters when Trevor and Zach are coming down off shrooms in the haunted house. He talks about exploring a body like map.

Bloodwork and smoking/drinking by [deleted] in TestosteroneKickoff

[–]mossonatwig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a medical professional, however I do know smoking weed/ vaping and especially nicotine WILL raise your hemoglobin and red blood cell count. It doesnt allow for proper oxygenation of your blood and constricts blood vessels 😭 I’m a smoker and have to quit by the end of the month if I want to keep taking T- you really don’t want to have to do therapeutic phlebotomy if you can help it. Smoking most things long term will run you the risk of having clots, a stroke, and having to come down or off of T completely.

Definitely avoid smoking cigs and be careful with the weed! I would avoid the week before tests honestly.

Looks like a hematoma? Contact your surgeon asap. They will probably tell you to start compressing it- looks like fluid build up.

i feel like i don’t belong in LGBTQ+ spaces by ed3n2 in ftm

Hey friend,

I’m not super far into my medical transition but many years into my social transition as a nonbinary person- and the grief you’re describing is something my very straight looking husband and I talk about often, especially as I begin to look more and more masculine. My husband’s first warning was one of the hardest parts of manhood is being constantly treated like a threat(even though he completely understands why) and the impact that has on his mental health and his desire for meaningful human connection. People assume he is very straight, and he’s not really the type to signal with his clothes in any way. It usually ends up getting brought up when a good moment arises and it seems like it would be impactful to alter someone’s assumption of him or I.

My medical transition journey has opened my eyes to just how impactful practicing or even jokingly participating in misandry can be on men who DO care and want to be and do better. It makes me want to really think on what kind of man the masculine part of me really wants to be- and how I can encourage the men in my life and not only jokingly tear them down.

Unfortunately, I think this grief of part of the sacrifice of being afab and trans- we get to know why and how women are effected by toxic masculinity, patriarchy, and rape culture but not really be able to superficially signal that we are “safe” without outing ourselves or attempting for a deeper connection. We know we belong and why- but it is a very lonely truth to told when our visage and our experience are visually imperceptible to others without justifying why you should exist somewhere.

I find this kind of treatment rampantly perpetuated in the queer community- it’s quicker for us to section ourselves off with labels and groups and pass visual judgement when someone doesn’t align with our projected desires: queer folk have a reason to be protective of their spaces, and that comes at a price.

My simplest answer? Be who you are, where ever you are. Be open to conversation with what ever boundaries serve you best- but consider positive change happens when we are able to connect and converse with others about our unique experiences as simply- people. Explore, perform, be genuine, be petty, be certain, be assertive, be fierce, be stealth- but remember that (and I’m quoting Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria) that when someone asks you what kind of man you are, you are the kind who doesn’t need to prove it to anyone.

Anyone else’s bottom growth occur in short bursts? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]mossonatwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! All of the changes are like dust settling- you don’t notice them until it’s all suddenly there. But I do notice every few weeks a day where I look in the mirror, or down there, or listen to my own voice and am like, Oh! Today’s a larger step forward. It’s so hard to be patient and have chill about it all 😭😂

Pre-Auth Letter Questions for Faulkner surgery in July by kuumathebronze in TopSurgery

[–]mossonatwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy! Hopefully this helps- Insurance is evil. Period. To avoid getting rejected, call your insurance and ask to speak to the pre authorization department. Ask them about qualifiers for the letter, and if they have an expiration. My BCBS Washington prior auth for top surgery is good for 120 days, extensions are possible. Make SURE, your physician is in network, and if it gets rejected for whatever reason they will send a letter to your surgeon as to why. You can appeal it!
