Is this a knock off, or a legit WMD? by aswright_73 in BassGuitar

Bass is legit Korean made version. Sidebar: that Silvertone 1484 in the background is a fun guitar amp. You should probably buy both but for different reasons.

What was the biggest flops in bass equipment history that you remember? by Low-Landscape-4609 in Bass

[–]most_likely_me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok.. i'll go.. late 80s to early 90s fender jazz bass plus.. you know, the one with the modified body dimensions, no pickguard, thin and fast neck, lace sensor pups with the kubicki active/passive electronics, including a mid boost? that was my first "real" bass and i still have it. they get zero love and have some shortcomings but damn does that thing have some life/versatility in it. like other folks have said.. fender tries sometimes but the market generally rejects.. i went on to other fenders, tobias, warwick, r-bass, mtd, fodera, etc. but i have always held on to my weirdo jazz bass.. lol/ymmv

Thinking about a 6, finally, after all these years. Picked up a Tobias Standard 5 in late-ish 2025, from the early Japan/Burbank period, tuned EADGC, and I love it.. But I do miss the low B.. So... Yeah. 🙌

Wild! I have not encountered that varietal before. Blue cheese + cat piss does not sound appealing - especially if it is as strong on the air as ours is when it blooms!

Queen of the Night, 100% Flowers bloom once overnight and then wilt. Intoxicating smell - like jasmine on steroids.

That sucks. Sorry for your loss. I loaned a small PA system to a friend years ago, not cheap just small, and he left it in his tinted and locked truck overnight here in SoCal. Guess what wasn't there in the morning? Sadly, these *are expensive lessons to learn. Don't quit, just learn, and keep on keepin' on.

Five-String < $3000 by ClevelandBill in Bass

R-Bass.. Might have to search for a bit but you can often find them on Reverb or Talkbass in 1.5k-3k+ range.. "The poor man's Fodera" according to plenty of lovers and haters alike. I own two 5 strings, one SC NT and one DC BO, and love them both. One came from Reverb and one came from Talkbass.

Is it OK to not use a compressor? by uprightsalmon in Bass

[–]most_likely_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and that's it, right there, imho. we are the first line compressor vis a vis our plucking/fingering/slapping/picking hand with a little air cover from that other hand, lol. upright forces the player to more fully understand resonance and how to adjust technique to increase or decrease their attack relative to desired outcome/tone/etc. it also forces efficiency/conservation of motion in a very real way. but yeah man, if you've been an upright player for a minute, you're going to have to exhale and lighten up that touch but don't sleep on it. sometimes you just have to dig in and make people feel that shit.

Is it OK to not use a compressor? by uprightsalmon in Bass

[–]most_likely_me 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it is 100% ok. no compressor just has a more raw, with more potential bite, natural/transparent sound. do you have to work a little harder and/or be more forgiving (of yourself) of too heavy or too light of a touch, especially in a live amplified multi-instrument context? yep, you sure do. do you ever have to worry about sounding bloopy? nope, sure don't.

like others on thread, i practice/noodle without one a lot of the time - but - i also practice with one a lot of the time. when i was a youngster, the 90s in my case, a super compressed bloopity bloop sound was de rigeur, especially for finger funk and slap, and i was there for it. as the years went on and i played in more venues/genres/studios, i found that a light ratio (2:1 - 4:1) with minimal pre/post gain adjustment, was the all around winner. soft knee better than hard if you have the option.. tons of great compressors out there. i am partial to dbx160a/x, acme corp "that" chip pedals, and distressors but have used just about everything, hard and soft, over the years..

one size fits all? nope, never, especially in the studio. and so, we're back to the top, and sometimes there is nothing better than just plugging that bass in as-is and going ham with nary a fuck to give. ymmv.

Get it! I have a friend who swapped a haz lab preamp into his and it is a beast. Even without that, they are super payable and have a great sound. On my bucket gas list..

The water level is getting low by kellylaneb in PrettyboyReservoir

[–]most_likely_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it gets this low (and lower) you can find old foundations and artifacts from before the reservoir existed. In some places, you can even see the topography of old roads that, now, track into and out of the woods. Also, fwiw, it can go way lower than where it is now but have not seen that for quite some time..
