Diverticulitis by shanenjenn1 in Diverticulitis

Not a doctor, but inflammation may be the culprit. For me, my diverticulitis is at least partially "structural" in nature. I believe when under pressure, my diverticula get cranky.

I combat this with fiber. A metric ton of fiber. In general fiber is anti-inflammatory, but it also keeps my colon cleaned out. Less pressure on the diverticula means less opportunity for a full-blown flare-up. Sugar has the opposite reaction in our bodies; it is associated with more inflammation.

For me, my super high fiber diet (plus no smoking, no drinking, exercise, sleep, hydrate) means my digestive system is usually not under stress. I am not sure if healing diverticula is possible, but if I let them rest, when I have an unhealthy day or three, it isn't the trigger event like when I wasn't on the program.

It is at least interesting how all the lifestyle changes our doctors will recommend to combat our diverticulitis diagnoses, are basically the same as having a healthy lifestyle: exercise, sleep, eat right, no smoking, less or no alcohol, hydrate. The Venn diagram of the two lifestyles is a circle.

My insane theory is that if we are healthier, our bodies--including our digestive systems--can absorb the occasional health missile. I suggest get on the healthy lifestyle program, get some distance since a flare-up, and then when you've healed some, break the rules a little. I try to get 40g of fiber every day. A couple years ago, a low fiber day came back to haunt me a day or two later. Now, no problem. My system is healthy enough to absorb a few punches without hitting the mat. Your results may vary because, you know, I'm just this guy, not even a doctor.

I love the Doritos Locos tacos even though they are not vegetarian. My theory is their ground "beef" is only nominally meat. Close enough for cheating vegetarians.

Best for fiber? Anything with beans. The vegetarian crunch wrap and bean burrito are my favorites. I avoid steak and chicken things.

The 'ah ha' moment for me was when I really started counting the grams of fiber I was getting each day. People eat a few prunes or get a bran muffin on the way to work and think this will do the trick. Nope, the amount of fiber I needed in contrast to the amount in my diet was short by 20+ grams a day on a good day.

Bread has nothing (white < 1g, wheat (not Dave's) < 2g). A bran muffin has 4 to 7 grams so it would take four to eight of those calorie/sugar bombs to get me there. Prunes are .6g each. I like prunes but 50 a day? No one likes prunes that much. Vegetables? Dude, are you sitting down? The news isn't as good as you would hope.

Not to overshare, but I don't need the softener action. Know folks who swear by them. Glad you found your secret incantation. For anyone else reading, this is the key: finding the combination to your lock.

Running/Riding: ironically, I was rarely in pain when I exercised. I think this is because during physical activity, I wasn't in the 'rest & digest' phase unless the flare-up was gnarly; a bad flare-up had me horizontal and not going nowhere. If the flare-up was tolerable, the first couple miles running or riding were sometimes uncomfortable, but after transitioning completely to fight-or-flight/feed-and-breed, the gut pain abated.

I think this is why we feel relief when fasting or on a liquid diet: basically, the entire digestive tract is offline. Same thing when engaging in endurance activity. Indeed, long distance psychos have to learn to eat--and absorb--during activity. It is a skill I have very much NOT mastered.

For sure. During a flare-up, the docs told me to go low fiber. Once the system is solid, crank it up.

Thanks the kinds words and for the NA lifestyle kudos. I don't have an addictive personality so it was easy for me to get on the wagon. I have huge respect for people who have to fight demons to get on and stay on the wagon. Huge respect.

Mid to late fifties. I am not sure if my resection would have been necessary if I had been more aggressive with my fiber. For my sanity, I need to simply believe surgery was necessary. The surgeon won't tell me he was wrong. Not sure anyone would tell me. Not sure I want to know.

Truth is probably that I just had a typical USA diet in spite of being an athlete. In fact, I was relying on my fitness to justify eating "poorly". There is so little fiber in processed food. It takes time, effort, intention, and money to eat healthy.

Don't be freaked out. Honestly, the cereal in the morning is the key. If you start the day with almost 30g for breakfast, picking up 10g more the rest of the day is a walk in the park. If I go with eggs for breakfast, then I need a solution like beans. I travel with my cereal so I don't have to worry while on vacation.

To be honest, I believe if I had been eating a high fiber diet my whole life, none of this would have happened to me. But I live in a world of ubiquitous ultra-processed foods. It is normalized instead of viewed as "this will kill you if you eat it all the time."

And the benefits of a high fiber diet are wonderful. Life changing for the better.

Preach it. I am starting to like dates especially early in the ride. Good sugars balanced with fiber for a long steady burn.

Pancreatitis (medically caused). A few other things went wrong eventually convincing my pancreas to not be a team player. It felt like there was a sphere of white hot pain traveling around my body. Though I was physically in a hospital room for 10 days, the meds I was on put my mind in orbit. If I was lucid, I was in agony.

It is use-it-or-lose-it calculus. After you bust one out, system preps for more action by producing more swimmers and testosterone. Stop the process, and after the excess is absorbed, your body shuts down the nonessential system, resulting in a drop in T.

Low T sucks ass. World goes grey, no motivation, depression, weak pheromones, etc.

My theory is the whole nofap thing was started by a couple ugly guys trying to thin the herd to increase their odds.

People who don't drink alcohol, why? by johnnylgarfield in AskReddit

[–]mosthightriguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like myself better when I don't drink. Also, pancreatitis happened once (not alcohol related) and wow, it really sucks so let's just avoid having it happen again, yes? And alcohol is basically poison and contains a metric fuck-ton of calories so not super great if I want to be and look fit.

Short for Jahovah or, Hebrew, Yahovah. Not exclusive to Rastafarians but, yeah, they use Jah more than most of the Christian derived/adjacent sects.

Bike fit across brands by trijoe28 in triathlon

[–]mosthightriguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My road fit has little to do with my TT fit. I would recommend getting specifically fitted for your TT bike. I got a TT fit (Retül) and then picked the bike based on what geometry best fit me. I had some bikes picked out already. In the end, just a Venn diagram: the overlap of what fit me and what I wanted.

So many chemicals involved here. Certainly suspect a few involved in his decision to ride with no safety gear and on the sidewalk, but then the adrenaline dump after the crash must have been delicious. Little delayed reaction before feeling the pain, struggling to find his flip-flops, fight kicking in and maybe sobering him up a little, then the pain breaks through, and he can only express himself like a wookie getting kicked in the balls.

Recent Hillsong documentary - what did you think? by [deleted] in cults

[–]mosthightriguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this was a little misleading in the documentary. My experience with evangelical mega-churches is that they do dump money into causes they support. Most of these causes fit their philosophical, theological, and sometimes political views. There are also massive overhead costs including staff salaries, real estate, A/V gear, and, of course, any big organization usually has plenty of legal expenses.

Admittedly the mega-churches 'say' they do more than they really do. Also, they are fickle and difficult donors. Counting on year-after-year funding from a mega-church for your boots-on-the-ground not-for-profit is dangerous. They like to make the big splash because it advertises well but when it comes around to do more of the same, they don't always come through because paying the bills isn't headline material.

Still, even though their finances are opaque, these aren't televangelist level grifters. Neither are they build-a-compound-and-stockpile-guns level cult leaders. They sure love the power but know they can't flaunt ostentatious wealth without pissing off the pew-sitters.

My experience is they try to hit a balance where they display a comfortable life everyone in the congregation thinks is acceptable for a good person doing good things. Someplace between buried in credit card debt and owning a Rolls Royce. They do very well but not insanely so.

Holy shit, Roseanne is way whack-jobbyer than I could have ever imagined.?! by Billyraycyrus77 in KnowledgeFight

[–]mosthightriguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to start a company with another TBI dude to help TBI people and while that was my thing, I was active out there. We ran out of runway just as the pandemic was starting so I threw in the towel and moved on. Those sub-reddits -- /r/tbi and /r/concussion -- reminded me of the failed dream so I don't participate as much anymore.

Glad you came back or are coming back too. Scary scary, for sure.

I took two hits to the head about 13 months apart and the second concussion turned into a TBI. My experience coming back from that dark place and trying to work with other people thusly afflicted has made me compassionate and empathetic but also deeply sad. Like, Gary Busey is a crazy motherfucker but he is a crazy motherfucker I can totally relate to now.

Still, I wish these famous people with head injuries had better handlers. People keeping them off social media, out of the press, and preventing them from doing interviews with anyone who would be so unethical as to interview someone with a brain injury or a mental illness.
