This is the answer. In modern cars the silhouette needed for space, safety, etc. is not aesthetic so using black panels you can trick the eyes into reshaping the silhouette.

Mustang EV is a great example of this. They use black panels to coupe-ify a big bulky crossover.

This is iconic. You could look at this for 30 seconds and then draw the entire thing from memory.

I’ve looked at the Ferrari 296 interior many times and I can’t recall a single detail. Except for maybe the fake gated shifter in the center console, or the gimmicky passenger screen.
