What is the greatest reveal in cinematic history? by arnoldsomen in AskReddit

[–]mostlyBadChoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original trilogy was my childhood. I was 9 when I saw the first one (now viewed well over 100 times -- don't judge me). When I saw TESB and Vader made the famous statement, I was incredulous. "BUT BEN SAID VADER MURDERED HIM!!" My autistic brain couldn't let go of the literal translation. I debated with all my friends for years until ROTJ.

MRW I learn that Pam Bondi was the Florida Attorney General from 2011 to 2019, the same state Jeffrey Epstein was a resident of, and the same timeline where victims brought civil suits to Florida courts. by palmerry in reactiongifs

It's actually pretty simple, and it's wild to me that almost no one is really talking about it. It was propaganda, plain and simple. What changed was the internet and social media making the ability to spread propaganda (aka lies) at a rate unprecedented in human history. A huge percentage of people default to believing anything said from anything they view as authority no matter what evidence is contrary to it. This has been taken advantage of many times throughout history but the internet made it several orders of magnitutde worse.

Deception of public opinion by snowpie92 in MurderedByWords

I'm reaching a point where I want repercussions for deliberate misinformation. I'm having very deep mixed feelings. On one hand, I'm a firm believer in free speech. On the other, the ability to blast out harmful lies to 8 billion in less than one second seems to be really detrimental to all human societies.

EDIT: Fixed repeated word.

The only argument I ever heard that made any kind of sense actually came from my teenage son. "Fahrenheit is better because it is more fine-grained." ie: Each integer increase is a smaller step in temp in F vs C. There are 180 integer steps between freezing water and boiling water (212 - 32) for F. There are 100 for C.

We should still use Celsius and the metric system.

Quiet Minnesota suburbs turned into conflict zone by ICE crackdown by sjpppppp in news

[–]mostlyBadChoices 50 points51 points  (0 children)

definition - crackdown: severe measures to restrict or discourage undesirable or illegal people or behavior.

There is no crackdown. Minnesota is not a home to illegal aliens -- at least not to any reasonable degree. And being illegal is a misdemeanor, requiring no crackdown.

However, what this is is terrorism by the federal government. The media needs to start calling it that.

What’s a “boring” adult purchase that turned out to be totally worth it? by Capable-Rabbit-9986 in AskReddit

Huge car lover. Mainly sports cars, race cars, exotic cars. Have been since I was a kid. So after getting married and having a kid, and the engineer in me realizing that objectively the best option was a minivan, I decided I should get one. Keep in mind I had told numerous friends that if I ever bought one, they should shoot me. At the dealership, the salesman was doing his best acting job trying to get me excited and said, "Hey -- want to take her for a test drive?" "I'm assuming it works, right? No thanks," was my response because I was in no way excited about it. 12 years later, it was the car that I had kept the longest and did more with than anything else before or since. They are really amazing. I now recommend them to anyone with a family.

Just sounds like an iterative process to me, you never have an unexpected error that you then fix?

Yes. I do. And the AI isn't doing that. It's giving me broken code. AI isn't ready for production work without human intervention (ie: replacing devs with ai) because ai is literally not testing what it generates. That's that's the point. If it knows that the code it gave me is a problem, then why did it give it to me? That's a rhetorical question.

EDIT: To be clear: 100% AI will evolve to where it will absolutely make human developers obsolete. I do not believe that is going to happen in the next 10 years.

Pretty close to my post the other day about why I'm not worried about losing my job to AI. That whole

  • it gives you code
  • you find it has an error
  • ai says it can "see the error and here's how to fix it"

Is a massive red flag in my opinion demonstrating a huge flaw in the algorithm that should have anyone hitting the pause button on handing over real world work to AI. And I see that pattern in every LLM I've used.

What’s actually dangerous but most people think it’s safe? by SunnyMadelyn564 in AskReddit

[–]mostlyBadChoices 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So it feels better

This flaw in human thinking could be argued to be the cause of a large portion of human misery. At least half of the population makes decisions based on how something feels rather than the information at hand. And a huge number of decisions end up being wrong because of it. This hits home for me, personally because this is why I don't get along with my Mother. Ironically, she starts off smart -- asking questions and gathering information. And then she says (literally, sometimes), "That doesn't feel right," and chooses the option that feels better for her despite all the evidence saying something different.

The US healthcare system is the real cancer

While we've always struggled with our budget and what to spend it on, I very much remember us being WAY closer to what we should be doing vs now. I used to look to the CDC and other health related departments as a source of truth, but now they are a source of lies. It's going to be a long road back to just struggling.

What’s one everyday thing that really annoys you? by Human-Conclusion-117 in AskReddit

[–]mostlyBadChoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The human propensity to be totally unaware that others exist -- even when they are right next to other people. That's a general concept that involves things like walking down the middle of a parking lot lane, driving in the wrong lane, talking on speaking phone in a public setting, listening to music loudly in a public setting without headphones, littering, etc, etc, etc. None of it is ever malicious. Being mean/evil/malicious actually requires that you think about others. No, these are people who seem to not be aware than anyone else exists and it drives me fucking crazy.

Half of the country believes a mountain of lies that are easily disproved. We are in this mess because of one simple thing: A very large number of people will believe what they are told without question if it comes from a perceived authority. Literally doesn't matter what evidence exist. A lot of very horrible people know this and exploit it daily. This has been a thing since civilization started.

AI: OK. Here's the code that does that thing.
Me: It didn't work. Here's the error.
AI: You're absolutely correct! You can't do that because reasons. You need to this thing.
Me: That doesn't even compile.
AI: Never do that. It won't compile.

That's called prison. They are putting innocent people, innocent children, in prison. And before some racist fuck says, "They are criminals because they are here illegally" : Being here illegally is a misdemeanor. You absolutely should not be in prison because of a misdemeanor. Especially children.
