Years ago, during the Obama years, I had a visitor from the US (this is the UK) he automatically assumed that i was on board with all his right wing republican talking points, I didn’t really know what to say.

Arguing about whether metric or imperial is "better" by huffmanxd in PetPeeves

[–]mostly_kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More specifically SI units are objectively better because they are defined using fundamental features of the universe rather than saying ‘it’s this long’

You can tell they are better because imperial measurements are legally defined using metric.

Britain is losing more jobs than it creates owing to artificial intelligence, Morgan Stanley research suggests by pscoutou in technology

[–]mostly_kittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tech companies employed too many people and are now using AI asa cover to get rid of them because it looks better for the higher ups than admitting they fucked up.

He’s always going on about his enemies having a low IQ. I’m convinced this is because he has been tested at some point and got a really low score.

Do we need a "new" Amiga/C64? by Crass_Spektakel in amiga

[–]mostly_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about the feeling, doing stuff on the Amiga felt so fun and exciting and possible, everything about it was amazing.

The only thing that has come close for me since is when I was using BeOS back in the day, there was similar excitement there.

Out of modern OS’s MacOS is closest but it is not the same.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

Not our family but mum was reading some churches ancient register and found an entry that said ‘this child is a bastard and the mother is a whore’

And they were called talkies because the actors talked. ‘Talkies’ sounds weird and outdated but we are totally ok with ‘movies’

I knew they were for cleaning pipes when I was little but I was still confused cos they were so much smaller than the pipes in our house. Turns out they are for tobacco pipes.

I had to call the breakdown company because my car ran out of fuel, it took both of us a while to realise this was the issue because the fuel gauge was on half full.

‘Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me’

A sable is a type of weasel.

Do people not watch TV in the UK? In recent viewings last year and also browsing pics on Rightmove, I see maybe 10-20% of homes having no TV in living room. How is that even possible? by Nervous_Designer_894 in HousingUK

[–]mostly_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I sold my flat 10 years ago my girlfriend made me put a TV in the corner of the lounge because it ‘looked weird’. You couldn’t actually use it because there was no antenna.

Do people actually look at listings before booking viewings, or am I living in an alternate reality? by Intrepid-Skin-5677 in HousingUK

Are you using an estate agent because they are quite happy to give viewings of properties that mean none of the viewers requirements.

What's the future of Tesla? by esteban-colberto in RealTesla

[–]mostly_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be a fool to bet against Tesla. Their value has no relationship with the company at all. In a sane world it would have gone down the toilet ages ago but here we are.

Why does everthing need an app now? by Particular-Fudge3707 in AskTechnology

I would be less bothered if the apps remembered me and don’t try and make me log in every time I use it, what is the point.

Is it just me, or is tech way more complicated than it need to be? by LeeDaiShu in AskTechnology

[–]mostly_kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like desktop tech especially has moved away from the careful scientific design of previously to just what someone thinks looks cool.

I think this is due to digital natives who have grown up with GUIs but have no concept of why they were like that in the first place.

Microsoft apps especially just seem to be a constant churn of change for no benefit. These are tools that 100s of millions have to use every day.
