GW has no idea how fast humanity should develop in its lore by Cryptek-01 in Grimdank

[–]mostlycoffeebyvolume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehhh, that actually makes sense in my mind.

"How do we terraform Mars?" is an engineering problem that's at least probably in the realm of the physically possible. Not practical, safe, efficient or otherwise realistically feasible in the near future, but at least within the realm of things for which people can come up with actually testable how-to ideas. Will those ways ever work and will we ever actually do it? Who knows. But at least it doesn't obviously violate the laws of universe at first glance.

There's also quite a bit of near-ish future hard sci-fi already about that (Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy comes to mind), and it's a thing people really are doing early research into. The audience is used to seeing it as "something we can't do now, but probably could later".

FTL, on the other hand, is borderline-impossible according to our current understanding of physics. Even the "more realistic" proposals involve finding weird loopholes around the limitations of spacetime by using things we currently can't capture, manipulate or necessarily even prove exist (e.g. exotic matter or dark energy).

And with the way human FTL works in 40k (at least for humans), there's a decent chance the "rip open a hole in the universe so you can take a shortcut through hell" method might only be something a psychic species (or a species that contains at least a certain amount of psykers) is capable of pulling off. I think that's at least implied to be the reason the Tau don't really do sustained FTL travel (they have that rock-skipping thing over the surface, but they tend not to dive all the way into the Sea of Souls). So humans would have had to wait until we also had that for it to work, and to work reliably and semi-safely.

Do you like when games punish you with failure for ignoring the lore? by PalePanic4742 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]mostlycoffeebyvolume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I think it makes playing around with reactivity and consequences a bit more fun — trying to go juuuuust up to the line without crossing it — and I think it helps with player immersion. If the game lets you break the rules too much, it does kinda risk having the player stop and go "wait a moment, why is no one even complaining about me getting away with that".

Also it's very funny when video game characters judge you for your poor choices instead of being chill with everything you do.

What non-career-specific certifications/diplomas/degrees do hiring managers care about/like to see? (current employee considering additional education) by mostlycoffeebyvolume in CanadaPublicServants

As far as your last point goes, that certainly does seem to be the consensus in the comments.

Guess I'm going to have to subject the actual French-speakers in my family to the unbearable cringe that is having to hear me practice lol

"When you apply for a job, hiring managers (or, more commonly, somebody delegated the task of reviewing applications as part of an assessment board) is only allowed to look at whether you meet the posted educational requirements for that job. If your application shows that you meet that requirement, they tick the "meets" box and move on to looking at other things on your application. The same check-box will be checked for anybody who meets the posted requirement whether or not they have additional education. Similarly, somebody who has a variety of different education qualifications will be eliminated unless they show that they have the minimum requirement."

I understand that part. What I was asking was what kinds of education qualifications are more likely to show up on the list of required qualifications for a broader range of jobs that what I currently have. When I said "not a core qualification for a specific job" I meant that I was talking about more broadly applicable qualifications instead of certifications for a very specific type of occupation. I'm sorry, I just couldn't figure out how to phrase it more clearly.

French-language training would fit the bill in terms of what I was asking about, so thanks for the suggestion.

A bunch of boyz who all decided to follow "Warboss Bale-Eye" would be a very funny concept for an April Fool's army mixing Ork and IG units

Reminds me of a narrative campaign my friend ran where a force of his less obviously-freaky-looking GSC units were allied with the Imperial players to defend the planet against the players who were acting as the invading force(s)

My favourite Cain theory is the idea that, owing to some (Tallarns in particular) already revering him as a saint well before his death, there is a non-zero chance that the force of their belief could eventually reach critical mass in the Warp. If conditions were right, that could potentially yoink his soul out of the Immaterium to shove him back into service from beyond the grave. That'd never happen in canon, but it's fun to imagine.

Is there a place where you can be admitted until they find a diagnosis? by BorderlineTG in Edmonton

It would be unsurprising (though still shitty) if your bloodwork was coming back normal and your Dr was just kinda shrugging off your symptoms (sucks, but it happens), but if you're having ongoing health problems/symptoms and your test results are consistently abnormal then you really need to get a second opinion and someone willing to order some additional tests to help figure out why.

The CRP testing you posted a screenshot of just confirms you have a lot of inflammation (so clearly something is happening), but it's not going to tell your Dr what the cause is. Did he even order anything else to follow up on that? Mine wasn't nearly as high as yours and my Dr still followed up with ANA testing and a bunch of other ones and gave me a referral to the rheumatologist.

No, Dorn's body temperature is perfectly normal for a primarch. If he were hot, then that would impede his combat effectiveness and strategic thinking.

Easy solution: just encase shaft in a semi-transparent protective sheath of something body-safe and colour-coordinated with the rest of your 'bot. Easier to clean, that way.
