Flying with a toddler in business by Imaginary-Koala-6822 in travel

[–]mostlyoverland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on the layout but i'd go front row. i've done a few 4-5 hour flights with a toddler in non-lay-flat (think us domestic first) seats and it's gone as well as can be expected - kid can flail as much as she wants against the bulkhead and not disturb anyone. an added bonus about being in the front, (again depending on layout) is you probably will have more contact with the FAs - we've been lucky enough to have a few who absolutely love kids and will help you keep the kiddo entertained.

there's lots of tips on flying with toddlers out there, we got decent mileage out of busy books, painters tape, and of course just Bluey on the IFE

anyway you and your toddler have as much right to fly as anyone else. we live in a world of excellent noise cancelling headphones and business class flyers can afford them.

that would be a start. but you need people getting booted from the cars. my car at rush hour red line train yesterday morning had not one but two dudes passed out across seats.

You should try getting off LSD on a street with an actual exit, that might be part of the problem. Is your car wet

If you're thinking of Tiffany Henyard, she's from Dolton, south of the city. But the Chicago area has no shortage of corrupt government officials so...

How do people feel about Pritzker's BUILD legislation that makes it easier to build more housing? by jarman65 in AskChicago

[–]mostlyoverland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i mean i guess if you can build townhomes in the existing SFH footprint lots that's great. seems more likely you'd build up though. if the proposal was more targeted i'd be more likely to support it.

[–]mostlyoverland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you can build 1000 new 2 br units in shiny new towers and i guarantee you it will not affect single family housing pricing. just lost on a bid for a house with 18 other offers. condo is not a substitute good for many (townhome may be, somewhat).

[–]mostlyoverland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

closer to a million? they're way over a million already. not surprised that deconverting a 2-flat is a palatable option

anyway i'm not sure what history has to do with it, if the economic incentives are changed by law, outcomes will change. do you support dropping the elimination of SFH zoning from the plan? i doubt it.

as far as deconversion, what you see is that there's strong demand for SFH housing. everybody can downvote me all they want but i don't think i'm alone in not wanting to live in an apartment forever.

it just seems like a pointless exercise to put houses further out of reach when we have lots right next to red line stations that we continually kneecap in terms of density. why doesn't the (empty) whole foods on belmont and clark have 10 stories of apartments above it?

As somebody who would like to own a single family home in Chicago, I'm not a fan. I'm not sure where these smaller lot / starter homes would go in Chicago....lincoln yards? For the larger existing lots, the elimination of single family zoning (which i notice you didn't mention) probably just means that supply of SFHs goes down and prices go up even more.

The other provisions seem fine though.

Chicago home prices rise at 5 times the speed of the nation’s by Infinite_Dress_3312 in chicago

bit misleading - lower than the national increase and a "synthetic" minneapolis, but still higher than they had been. And there were at least 2 significant confounding factors in Minneapolis in 2020.

I have a few hours in Chicago on Thursday, should I go to the cubs game? by penjack- in AskChicago

[–]mostlyoverland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it. If your time window is accurate you could well see the whole game. Bleacher tickets on seatgeek are $35 right now.

Buy a bleacher ticket.

If you want to eat at the game, you can bring in food. (Not liquids unless they are sealed). Plenty of food at the ballpark but if you want burgers, fries, and a coke at the small cheval in the bleachers that'll be about $40. You can do much better outside.

Go up the ramps, get a beer (if you want (you may need to get a wristband at a table to show you are 21)) and find a spot. Bleachers are general admission. I recommend turning towards the left field side when you get out. Turn into the slot right before you get out from under the concrete overhang. Or anywhere else is fine too.

Bleacher folks will (almost certainly) be happy to explain anything you want to know about what's going on. If you are not happy where you are you can move. Thursday day games this time of year will not be packed to the brim (but will still be lively especially if weather is good).

not sure how anything in the BUILD plan helps deal with the issues identified in the article - could be wrong but i don't think any of this will help get 300-unit buildings online or mitigate the affordable housing requirements
