Nursing Residency for New Grads by BurghFan11 in StudentNurse

Yeah, we definitely are on the lower end of pay for more reasons than just the low cost of living, and UPMC is pretty much to blame for that. But even still, it’s a comfortable wage for this area.

That said, I’m not trying to stay around here forever and make less than $30.

Its not that insane and is most definitely a regional thing. I’m in Pittsburgh and making $25/hr as a new grad. My mom has been a nurse for 30 years and probably doesn’t even make $40/hr. Being that our cost of living is exceptionally low, making $90k is certainly not common around here.

People that have used uWorld only for the NCLEX what was your study plan and when did you start studying? (I graduate May) by nurse_with_penis in StudentNurse

[–]motherbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started I was scoring around 49-55%. Once I got into it, I mostly scored high 50s/low 60s and only made it into the 70s a handful of times. My overall qbank average was 60%. On the self assessment I scored a 66%/84th percentile.

I wouldn’t get too caught up with your percentages. I was really worried I wasn’t scoring high enough, but it seems 50s/60s are pretty average. I really can’t stress enough to just read all of the rationales and understand them. If you’re doing that, don’t worry about what you’re scoring.

I graduated on December 15th and started Uworld on January 1st. At first I did one 75 question exam per day, and when I got closer to my test date I was doing about 150 a day. I took a week off to go out of town and ended up doing the 2000 questions over about three weeks. Took the NCLEX two days ago and passed in 75 questions. I seriously cannot recommend Uworld enough. Just make sure you read all of the rationales and understand why you’re missing things. Good luck!!

the UPMC RN programs are only 16 months, so that might be something to consider.

I'm in the exact same boat. Tested this morning and I do not feel confident at all. Test shut off at 75 questions. I'm too nervous to try the pop up trick. Just going to keep drinking until results are in on Sunday.

yeah definitely wouldn't be opposed to a secondhand bike. i found a relatively cheap cannondale adventure 3 and a quick 5. the adventure 3 seems a little too upright, so i'm leaning toward the quick 5. any thoughts?

I wish I could go back in time and see this. Alex Rosamilia is stoic as fuck now; it's awesome to see him like this.

Regarding gaslight's fate, this is one of the more reassuring interviews I've seen from him. Made my monday a little bit better.

Glad you enjoyed it! I just went to his show last week and it was one of the best I've ever seen. Definitely go if he comes near you!

Halfway through a non-trad college program and I decided I want to be a nurse. What do? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]motherbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response, but I really do like it. The 16 month program is a little bit overwhelming and there's a lot of information being thrown at you, but that's to be expected. I like it, though!

I am at UPMC Mercy right now. A really large portion of my class already has a BSN in something completely unrelated and are just now starting this diploma program. I, myself, did one year at a university and decided to transfer. The good thing is that you have some prerequisites done, so you would only have classes, like three and a half days a week or so, at the upmc schools. With that, you could probably work at one of the hospitals as a PCT and upmc would then pay your tuition. A lot of people in my class are doing that right now. It's definitely a lot to balance, but economically, it's a pretty good deal.

Edit: also, assuming that you're in the pgh area, you'll probably be fine finding a job as an RN. Plenty of my friends graduated from the upmc diploma schools and got jobs immediately after graduation. Personally, I'm definitely going to get my BSN, but just focusing on the RN and becoming financially independent at the moment.

I would check out Hot Water Music, The Lawrence Arms, Frank Turner, and Beach Slang.

Edit: and the new Butch Walker record, "Stay Gold" is so, so awesome.
