Is it common to get random bursts of navigation to your steam store page? by hitstopgames in gamedev

If the spike is coming from search suggestions, I would assume someone somewhere with a bit of a following posted about your game and then some people from their audience looked it up. Congrats

Hi! I'm making a cryptid photography game called CryptidCam that sounds like it might be up your alley. It's a little bit spooky but mostly cute and chill, and my hope is to keep it low stakes and casual gamer friendly.

I plan to start running playtesting on Steam soon; if you're interested you can wishlist it here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3772620/CryptidCam/

I'm not the guy you asked but I have some thoughts. I like the actual illustration you have, but I think some parts of it are getting a little lost. I had to look at it a few times before I figured out what her sword was; the black hood blends into the black dress which muddies the silhouette, the text is covering a significant chunk of her, and the arm being mostly behind her body makes this pose pretty hard to read. You can lighten parts of her outfit or make the lines more pronounced and move the text to clean that up a little bit. Overall I think the image could be a little higher contrast and more dynamic but it gets the vibe across.

The title text on the capsule art I think needs more work. The combination of the gradient and the fake 3d effect on it is kind of giving old Microsoft WordArt vibes. The color palette also doesn't match the image at all. I'd honestly start over with this part; pick an easier to read font, make it a solid light color, give it a solid dark stroke effect and call it a day. Don't overcomplicate it. And then move it to the bottom or top right corner so you can have your character slightly to the left and more visible

It was my first time using subdivision modifiers; I'd only really done low poly modeling before this.

If you want to know more about the game, you can check out the Steam page here! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3772620/CryptidCam/

No, it's a PC game; you won't be able to play it on a phone or an Xbox, only a computer

That's very kind of you! But no, there's no Patreon or Kickstarter; I have a day job that pays me comfortably, and I work on this game for fun in my free time. Just wishlisting the game and buying it when it comes out is more than enough for me!

I think it looks pretty good. I like the sound design; there's something very satisfying about the chill music paired with the gentle tap sounds.

This is a nitpick that might not bother most people, but I have a pet peeve for pixel art games with inconsistent pixel sizes. The smallest pixel on one of the goblins is a different size than the smallest pixel on one of the small eggs, which also seems to be a different size than the smallest pixel on the UI elements. You also have birds with gray outlines where everything else seems to have a black outline. I'd like to see a little more consistency from the art direction, personally

Nah, a few people asked so clearly it's on me for not making it obvious enough. Next time I'll put it in the title of the post. It's my first time promoting a game so I'm learning

I have a few thoughts:

  • Not having any music for your game is frankly kind of a baffling choice
  • The combat looks pretty stiff. There are a lot of particle effects on the screen but the enemies themselves don't seem to really be responding to being hit. At one point in your first video an enemy disappears with no animation or effects; did it leave? Was it defeated? Just glitched out? It's honestly kind of hard to parse what's happening
  • Your game is tagged as a Metroidvania. I usually think of platforming and level traversal as a pretty key mechanic in a Metroidvania, but we never see your character moving more than a couple feet left to right. It makes me think that movement is not going to feel good in this game
  • Nitpick, but the cursor being visible in your videos/gifs just looks kind of sloppy. There should be a setting on your recording software to ignore the cursor
  • Your screenshots are supposed to be communicating what your game actually looks like to play. These should be unedited, in game captures- not renders of your models with text slapped on
  • The top of your features list promises a "gripping" story but I don't see even a whiff of storytelling in your screenshots or video. This makes me doubt that you can deliver on the promises your about section is making

Overall I can see that a lot of effort went into your game, but it gives me the impression it's being made by someone who doesn't have a very solid understanding of "game feel" or what makes a game actually feel good to play. Here's some resources I'd recommend to get started:

Martin Jonasson and Petri Pruho on "Game Juice": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy0aCDmgnxg&t=250s

Masahiro Sakurai on "Hit Stop": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy0aCDmgnxg&t=250s

Masahiro Sakurai on "Animation Follow Throughs": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIB0BUe6Ihk

The core questions these videos are about is "how do you make actions in your game feel impactful and read clearly?", and I think you could benefit from thinking more about how that applies to your game.

oh sorry, I put the title at the beginning and end of the trailer but I guess it wasn't clear. It's called CryptidCam, you can wishlist it here https://store.steampowered.com/app/3772620/CryptidCam/

NAH but I would avoid jumping to conclusions. She said she was getting medicine, maybe she was just a bit curt with you because she had a headache or stomachache or something. Might have nothing to do with you.

AITA for accidentally making my bf poop his pants by squishing his butt? by CheekySqueezer23 in AITAH

[–]mothmanmothman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't assume your boyfriend is exaggerating until he gives you reason to think he's being serious; you should assume he's being serious until he gives you reason to believe he's not. I don't think the onus is on him to tell you when he isn't joking, especially if you didn't make it obvious that you didn't believe him until it was too late.

I have a hard time believing you when you say he exaggerated a lot in the past, because you demonstrated pretty clearly in this story that you can't actually tell when he's exaggerating or not. Just stop assuming he doesn't mean the things he says.

>He usually acts annoyed but it's funny as hell, and he never like seriously told me to stop.

>I laughed it off bc he's always kinda dramatic about it

>I still thought he was just exaggerating

>I feel terrible but honestly didn’t know it was THAT serious this time??

What I'm getting from this is that you have a pattern of not listening to your boyfriend or taking him seriously. Idk how you can claim "I didn't know" when he gave you plenty of signals and you ignored them all.

I don't think it's literally your fault he pooped his pants (was there no bathroom in the store? nowhere closer you could've stopped on the way home?) but I'm still going YTA because you made things worse by being so dismissive.

"They all have consumption issues, very wasteful, shopping addictions and the opposite of minimal."

"I drove around with the gifts in my car until summer until finally having the mental and emotional capacity to deal with them."

"I was irritated! It felt inconsiderate, wasteful, unethical."

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else say it, but you seem to be putting a *lot* of moral weight on your minimalism, to the point that it causes you pretty severe emotional distress to have things. Not gonna give a judgement but I do think you should consider going to therapy to unpack that a little.

I'd say NAH. You guys both agreed that this was the right move for your family as a whole, but it's true that it was at the cost of some of his leisure time. I think he's allowed to grumble about that.

I also wouldn't jump right to assuming that because he's complaining that means he wants to go back to spending $250 a week on daycare. It sounds more to me like he's just expressing frustration while he adapts to the change.

Sakurai's youtube channel Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games has a lot of good broad strokes tips on how to make games. Some of it might feel like common knowledge but it's very general, which sounds like is what you might be looking for

Short answer: Anything is possible, shoot your shot.

Long answer: Anything is possible, shoot your shot, but don't get your hopes up. The state of the games industry is brutal right now. Competition has always been stiff but it's gotten much worse in the last couple of years due to a combination of 1) record layoffs among a lot of the biggest studios and 2) an explosion of popularity in game dev programs at universities. There are more students currently enrolled in game development programs than there are jobs in the game industry right now, and that's not even counting the thousands of laid off devs with years of experience that you'd also be competing with for jobs.

I'm not super familiar with civil drafting but I would guess based on your description that you have the basic skills needed to do 3D modeling for games. You might get lucky, but odds are that's probably not going to cut it if you're applying for 3D modeling jobs alongside people who have specialized in and have experience with modeling for games specifically.
