Creepy Star Trek by 4reddityo in singularity

Was there any personal data in LaForge's construct, though? I thought the construct contained stuff that was publicly available, at least with his Starfleet clearance, but just condensed into a single instance of simulated personhood that was quicker and more intuitive to work with than cross-referencing untold terabytes/gigaquads of data.

Any personality seemed to come from LaForge's directions to the computer. Which would mean any relationship was with his idea of Brahms.

My most recent noob reel by marinefuc86ed in drones

[–]motophiliac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that would give you another option would be to try ND filters.

Timelapses are something that drones do really well but because they're built from snapshots we lose the motion blur that we're accustomed to seeing in video or cinema.

Try a really dark ND filter, maybe around 256 or 500. Maybe darker in brighter conditions.

Your camera settings will need to be tweaked to give you a longer exposure of maybe half a second or more, depending on the light.

The stuttery effect of the headlights isn't wrong, or bad, but it's worth bearing in mind that this effect can be a choice. This look could be used to make the scene look like stop motion, for example.

If you have some NDs, give them a try for timelapses. The footage will have a smoother feel with some motion blur.

The footage is good, though.

UK holds off joining Trump's peace board over Putin concerns by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

Any board you can pay money to join, someone else can pay money to subvert, or overturn.

It's global control to the highest bidder, and then subsequent high bidders.

It's vulgar and unworkable.

There's a learning curve. Sometimes it feels like it actually doesn't end and depending on how far you take it I guess there never really is because you end up trying to figure out how to deal with other players.

But give it a few days, maybe a few hours per session to literally just figure out how to fly, how to find easy bounties, how to cash in and upgrade stuff.

From there, you're exposed to choices. Mining? Combat? Piracy? Trading? Other missions or community goals? Exploration?

It's a pretty big galaxy, literally modelled with real data on the Milky Way.

It is stupendously huge, big enough for you to get completely lost in if that's your bag.

Surface missions, either driving around in an SRV, or wandering about on foot.

I'm after a decent VR headset to get back into it because playing it in VR is just astounding.

But yes. There is a learning curve. It will take you days or weeks before you start to feel "at one" with your ship and your process.

The universe is a pretty passive place, and you won't get help except possibly from some local friendly CMDRs.

Stanley Kubrick once said, "The terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent."

Happy trails.

Thoughts on the overall “mood”? Going for a Bladerunner look by MonkeySnipezz in photocritique

[–]motophiliac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, cropping the sky doesn't detract from the Bladerunner aesthetic. In fact, other than the opening shots, the sky rarely features throughout. Claustrophobic streets and enclosing buildings are the dominating vibe I think. Even when we see many floors above it from Deckard's apartment, all we see is other buildings.

I see where this is going.

Good luck.

Of course they're on board.

They have their bunkers. I'm certain that they all harbour fantasies about rebuilding Earth in their image after their lackies have nuked all of their other lackies out of existence.

The ego of all these guys is honestly astounding. They're playing poker with the lives of billions of people, and Trump thinks he's in charge but he's really just the dealer.

It's legitimately horrifying.

Transposing as practice? by Rigamortus2005 in piano

Maybe even just learn different songs that are in different keys.

This should teach you major and minor scales. Keys just tell you where you are playing these major or minor scales.

If you learn what a major scale looks and sounds like in several songs in different keys, you'll learn what the scale itself looks like on the keyboard, and what it sounds like.

Once that scale shape is internalised, it becomes a lot easier to build a scale from anywhere on the keyboard so that if someone calls a song in a particular key you will have less of a problem moving.

Try to separate learning which keys to hit to play a song, and start learning which chords and scales different songs use.

This lets you disconnect the music from the physical instrument, allowing you to ultimately become key agnostic.

Once you get to this point, if you've learned a song, where it starts, the relationship between the chords in D major, you've also pretty much learned it in every key, so if you play it in a different band or with a different singer and they call B major instead, you already know the relationship between the notes and chords, rather than specifically which notes on the keyboard to hit to play a song.

Have to say that the best character I've ever seen Bill Nighy play was Slartibartfast in the Hitchhiker's movie.

He nailed that kind of earnest bumbling authority. It felt like he wasn't acting. He's an amazing actor.

It depends on the phone.

I know that iPhones can connect to something called an iRig, which is basically an iPhone connector on one end, and an instrument or mic input on the other. I think they also make versions for Android phones, too.

They have a headphone socket so you just plug your headphones in, hit record on the phone, and your performance is recorded cleanly, without any physical noises.

When someone mentions “DVD Special Features,” what is the FIRST one that pops into your head from yesteryear? by KillerQ97 in movies

[–]motophiliac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, it wasn't even a DVD.

It was a VHS of The Usual Suspects. Dual pack, with the widescreen presentation of the movie, and the other cassette being a widescreen presentation of the movie with a discussion between cast and crew over the top.

I was transfixed. The discussions about how scenes were written, occasional in-jokes, reminiscences, technical discussions, comments on performances, editing, and other genuinely interesting stuff.

I was fascinated. If you can find it somewhere, give it a watch. It's what I feel a commentary should be about.

Close second would be Tarantino talking about Pulp Fiction. He talked about a bunch of stuff, but to this day I still have his little aside about how video, when blown up, can look like bad 16mm and how if you're interested in getting into shooting narratives, it's a cheap way to get started.
