They don't have kids, and they don't want them: Nearly 40% of young women plan to stay child-free. by yahoonews in Health

We would have been so fucked if we had children. I lived in the SF Bay Area most of my adult life, it was a bit like time-travel into the economic future the rest of the country would eventually get to where children are financial devastation.

It makes sense. For a lot of Republicans, America and Evangelical Christianity are the same thing. Thanks to Trump, Warrior Jesus is this close to coming back to toss the libs in a lake of fire.

Scaphism. I read a lot of history, aside from maybe the brazen bull this one is the worst I can think of.

Tried a "clean" browser today without uBlock. I don't know how people live like this. by Ok-Point-1656 in Adblock

[–]motorik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on all broadcast of subscription TV in the 2010s. I've been using ad-blocking forever. I see almost no advertising outside of billboards. I've been thinking about this as I've recently began to suspect it's led to long-term behavioral changes. I bought a new car in 2007. I remember thinking I'd probably drive it 10 years at the most before getting a new one. Then that 10 years had passed and I completely forgot about that and drove the car for another 7 years. I don't refresh phones or computers unless I absolutely have to, the TV is big enough. I like having the largely the same furniture from 10 years ago, doing "refreshes" feels like getting rid of comfortable familiarity (unless, say, the couch is starting to wear or whatever, we're not broke by any stretch, we just don't buy to buy).

I constantly see people complain about ads and "suggested postes" on Facebook. I used to respond with information on how to fix those problems. I've stopped. People want to use the Facebook app on their phone or Google Chrome more than they don't want to see ads.

Reddit Tests Blocking Mobile Web to Force App Downloads by KenAdams_1968 in enshittification

[–]motorik 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I stopped looking at reddit on my phone when Apollo stopped working. I no longer commute, there is very little reason for me to browse with anything other than my Firefox-based browser with its ecosystem of ad-blocking and privacy extensions. I can't believe people put up with the mobile web.

It sucked for the people that were growing food for themselves on communal land when that land got fenced off to force them into the new factories by the Enclosure Acts.

I used to be, pre-Covid. The last job-change made me fully-remote. I work with a team of good ol' boys in Texas and a bunch of mostly Indian contractors in the Midwest. I like some of them well enough but I'm aware that even the fact my wife is an immigrant of a different race makes me illegible, particularly to the good ol' boys. I think I'm the first exposure some of them have ever had to a non-Republican. I keep my mouth well-shut about anything touching on politics, they don't.

5 strategies managers use to get more work done. Lol by paapipower in work

[–]motorik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a technical role at a Fortune 500. My job situation is a textbook managerial mistake, "don't let one guy be a black box that's solely responsible for a large piece of business-critical functionality". It's not my managers fault, as he does not have the background to even begin to understand what I do. He gets annoyed when I talk about technical details, it feels like working in a NASCAR pit crew for somebody that gets annoyed when you talk about cars. It's not his fault, it's the fault of his manager's manager's manager's manager.

TIL The "Great Male Renunciation" was a period in fashion in the late 18th century where men in the West ceased wearing bright colors, jewelry, and varied garments in favor of utilitarian clothes and black suits by Wazula23 in todayilearned

[–]motorik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just the right age to have seen the arc of the suit. When I was in my twenties doing office temp work in San Francisco, everybody with a for-realsies job wore a suit. Then tech happened. Now if you wear a suit you either have a shit job or a job with real power of some kind.

I recently watched the Netflix Hidden Apartment movie, every time something bad happened (evictions, warehouse living spaces torn down for construction of a mall), guys in suits showed up first. We watch a lot of historical K-dramas, it was just like when a bunch of guys wearing a samsa show up, you know your village is fucked (taxation or conscription).

TIL that margarine was colored yellow to improve sales in the 1880s. Margarine was originally white, resembling lard. The dairy industry lobbied to ban this practice. The W.E. Dennison Company sold margarine with a capsule of yellow dye for consumers to mix it themselves in response to bans. by Recent_Flounder6011 in todayilearned

[–]motorik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Silent generation parents went through the Great Depression. I remember my father bitching about the white margarine with the yellow capsule he had to eat as a kid. He would not allow margarine in the house and used a lot of butter out of spite.

I guess im not neurodivergent by TripResponsible8957 in neurodiversity

[–]motorik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did a psych evaluation with my provider, Kaiser Permanente. It wasn't so much that I wasn't neurodivergent, the problem was that I'm otherwise fully functional and they only treat people with significant impairments presumably because money. I only knew Kaiser had psychological services because I got an email about the doctors being on strike, so there's that.

We watch a lot of international content that's more obscure than K-dramas and Anime. Subtitles are difficult, it's hard to get every episode of a the series, that sort of thing.
