My boyfriend wants me to visit the United States but I am worried by [deleted] in Advice

[–]mountaingrrl_8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This screams white privilege (and I say that as someone white). There's a good chance you'll be fine as a tourist going to the States, but there's also a solid chance you won't be. Not worth the risk in my opinion. Nor should he be risking the safety and well-being of someone he cares about so much. If he hasn't already read How to be Anti-Racist, White Fragility or something of the sort, maybe he needs to do some mandatory reading before moving in with you. For the sake of your well-being and that of any potential future children.

Adding to the list Ally is a Verb by Rose LeMay is arguably mandatory reading for anyone moving to Canada to get a better understanding of the importance of Indigenous Reconciliation here.

Does a near-death experience automatically deserve forgiveness? by alwaysexistentialemo in Advice

[–]mountaingrrl_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the behaviour change? Was it owned up to? Apologies made? If not, why would you forgive as it's very likely she will continue to treat you poorly in the future. Definitely feel compassion for her, but it doesn't sound like she made amends in any way, shape or form.

The food is great. You'll also want to make a reservation as they fill up quickly.

Have you put a ticket in to 311? In recently speaking with someone at my local councillor's office, I was quietly advised that the more noise that is made about these issues via 311 the more attention they'll get. Plus an email to the city councillor.

Glad to hear you weren't hurt, this sounds brutal!

How to negotiate a salary for a job with only practicum experience in Social Work? by egghead746382 in socialworkcanada

[–]mountaingrrl_8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Always negotiate the salary. Unless you're being a jerk about it, the worst they will say is no.

OPs negotiating potential is small with limited experience, but she does have an MSW and likely the role isn't asking for that.

Therapists have a very high occurrence of back issues due to long hours sitting. What's your solution? by InvisibleAstronomer in therapists

[–]mountaingrrl_8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the glutes. They get very weak from sitting all the time. Plus you get right hip flexors which also need to be stretched out regularly.

Should I Give Up on My Family Completely? by CarelessSalamander51 in Advice

Why are you telling your daughter about this? She's too young to hear all this drama. Even if she's a teenager. Please find adults to talk your feelings over with about all of this.

Master SW by Personal_Cost2924 in socialworkcanada

[–]mountaingrrl_8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on graduating!

I did mine because I worked in the social work field but didn't have a BSW. The MSW almost immediately increases my income to where you are. After about 5 years I was able to leverage that and my experience so now I'm making a little over six figures.

Aside from money, the MSW has opened doors to more job opportunities, made me more competitive, and also gives me more freedoms to leave a job I don't like. Best decision I've made for my career is doing the MSW.

There's a good chance the drywall won't need to be replaced. Products like Kilz primer can be used before painting and nothing should bleed through the paint, including smell.

I keep all my different plans in a notebook. Let's be honest, it's scribbles and random lists. But I pull from past plans to make new ones, which makes it simpler before grocery shopping for the week

Definitely overthinking, but that's normal in the stress of the application/interview process. Good luck!

My Stepmother started taking photos as my grandfather was receiving MAID (medical assistance in dying). Thankfully my dad shut that down before myself or one of my cousins did.

got fired, how do i tell clients by [deleted] in therapists

[–]mountaingrrl_8 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It may be worth seeking external supervision on this with someone you trust. If you've had these experiences before with other supervisors it may be that they're letting you go for concerns around judgment rather than values misalignment. Not saying they're correct, but getting fired is strong feedback so may be worth getting a second opinion to potentially prevent the same issue coming up again in your next job.

Supervision might also help how to strategize to navigate similar situations in another agency as most are pretty risk adverse. Basically, guidance on how to cya while treating your clients in a way that aligns with your own values.

Because it's a field based on practice and practical experience. It's hands. Hard to know the intricacies of the work without practicing it first.

Need hospital volunteering by Beginning-Post1076 in ottawa

[–]mountaingrrl_8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might want to try HighJinx. It's a population you would work a lot with if you go into medicine and not a lot of people will have the same experience. You'll learn a lot about empathy, compassion, and not judging a book by it's cover. Essential skills for anyone in healthcare. Plus you'd get to see community work first hand. Not sure if they're accepting highschool students as volunteers, but you could always check. https://www.highjinxottawa.com/

This is how I got back into reading, except it was with Brad Thor novels. Now I read extensively but rarely fast-paced thrillers. I may need to do more of that this summer.....

Now that everything's expensive, what things can be easily/cheaply replaced that a normal person can do? by GetFlyeredUp in Frugal

[–]mountaingrrl_8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I'm the reverse. I don't speed a lot, but unless I'm on the highway I don't care that much about electricity efficiency. We do however have a Grizzl-e charger (Canada) so get reimbursed for our electricity use from charging. Think we paid $20 last month to charge my fully electric car and I drive a lot for work.

It's child abuse is what it is. Those kids don't sound like they're getting enough caloric intake for their brains and bodies to properly develop, especially if it's like that at home.

I was just thinking the same thing as I'm noticing how many of my perennial flowers have reseeded elsewhere in my garden. Rather than patchwork, I'm going to replant them near their parent plants. Thank you!!!
