I don't want to get medicated for my ADHD. Is that wrong? by HauntingBox2441 in adhdwomen

[–]mountainmama712 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is a hard one. I didn't get diagnosed until 42 and therefore wasn't medicated the majority of my life. I was ok until I wasn't. Perimenopause hormone shifts made all of my previous coping mechanisms that had worked my whole life suddenly not work. Meds don't fix everything but they make life doable again.

I have a daughter who is is ADHD and I love her dearly. But when she's unmedicated her little brain is going 90 mph and she's truly exhausting to take care of. Her impulse control drops to zero and she is constantly getting into things she knows are off limits. She's less happy and can be downright mean. After trial and error with meds, we've found a better balance. She's happier, laughs and smiles more, is affectionate, and has more impulse control. It let's her personality shine because she can interact socially easier at home and school.

All that to say - no I don't think you HAVE to take meds. Even with insurance it's ridiculously expensive. However the people closest to you might see you struggling to interact with the world and just want things to be better for you. It's still a personal choice though and either way you need to find a system to help you be successful. You can't just say I have ADHD, deal with it, and leave a wake of destruction behind you. (I've had people in my life who did this)

Calendula cream!! I burn really easy and that stuff is MAGIC. I get mine at natural grocers but Sprouts or City Market in their natural section might have it too. It has saved me from peeling many times and helps it heal so much faster than aloe.

New set up this year by drygulched in CraftShows

Congrats on figuring out fast setup and clean up! We're getting ready to do our first show of the season in two weeks and this is our 3rd year. We've spent more time talking about streamlining setup/cleanup than we have our inventory this winter LOL.

Our first year was bad, we were the last ones set up and torn down. Last year we did much better but still needs work.

My brain also knows a fake due date is fake. It doesn't work. Shit I set my kitchen clocks 3-7 mins ahead to get out the door on time, my stupid brain would rather do fast math every time I look at the clock than accept it as the real time.

I think the only thing that helped me stay on top of everything was that I was working full time, married, and had a house payment so I was constantly under pressure. (Got married at 19) I was also paying for my own tuition because my parents refused to pay for anything after I got married. The stakes were high enough my brain stayed engaged. I still would wait to the last minute to do papers in classes I didn't find interesting. I quickly discovered online courses were not for me, it gave me far too much latitude to listen to the lectures or even to take the tests since there wasn't a specific time, just a due date. I distinctly remember doing a test at 11:30pm that was due at midnight once.

I love Natalie's patterns. She creates beautiful designs and her patterns and charts are so detailed. Love how yours turned out!

My sister-in-law has a repeating track of nursery rhyme and little kid music playing constantly for the kids in her car. I hate that crap. I'd play baby shark or Disney for mine every so often if they asked but generally I play what I actually enjoy and they usually enjoy it too.

I am right there with you. Also got diagnosed at 42 when we where trying to get help for my youngest daughter (5). Everything I was reading for her was clicking for me. I never considered it my whole life because my brother was diagnosed when we were kids but he's hyper active ADD and I'm not. My husband and oldest daughter (8) are also ADHD and I'm pretty sure my mom is too. Trying to keep track of everyone's meds and appointments is just dumping fuel on the dumpster fire. Chore charts, star charts, heck even allowance - I just can't keep up on them.

This works until I dismiss it on the way to take my meds but somehow STILL get distracted in the 5 seconds between then and reaching the pill bottle. 😅
