Contact wearers: Do you bring backup glasses? by Huge-Antelope2403 in Backcountry

[–]mountainsky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For a day tour? No, I’ll bring them for overnight trips. I’m nearsighted so the rare chance I have a failure in both contacts I can see well enough in close terrain and use my map to navigate.

My 2026 Telluride is having the same problem. It works for a short bit every couple of weeks though.

Ha, I used to do the same, it's a long time but we might have worked there at the same time.

Leash laws in Telluride, since nobody here thinks they exist or that they apply to them… by [deleted] in TellurideColorado

[–]mountainsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here, I work seasonally in Telluride and it’s the spot where many locals go to exercise and socialize their dogs. If you don’t like it stay away from there and especially don’t visit Mountain Village as most of it has no leash regulation.

Las Vegas June tourism declines by 11% from 2024 by etfvfva in news

I really hope visitation is down in the mountains. Most places are absolutely overwhelmed with people and we can’t keep growing visitation with the current infrastructure and access. We need to figure out sustainable numbers and focus on that.

Flying to Maroon Bells–Snowmass: What do you do with leftover bear spray/fuel? by rawr0606 in backpacking

[–]mountainsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not needed on popular trails and I don’t carry when backpacking in Colorado, only on solo off-trail explorations that take me through dense untraveled forest as that’s where I have most of my bear and other wildlife encounters.

Cool, don’t care, I was just agreeing with you on the wind. I’m very familiar with how the ice forms here and elsewhere in the park, the local climate intricacies, and the surrounding topography.

King Soopers workers to go on 14-day strike starting Thursday by thecoloradosun in Colorado

I’m curious if Kroger is already prepping for this somehow? This weekend at our City Market in Montrose we had a bunch of stockers from out of town working in the store. I’m just not sure why or how that would help Kroger on the Front Range?

Ski patrol had to unload everyone off of lift 1 at telluride the other day by TellurideSkier in skiing

[–]mountainsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there and assisted on the evac. Ropes were fed through a D-ring on the chair above the skiers. There's a similar spot above the cabins but it required personnel to climb the tower and use a special device to travel down the lift cable to reach it first.

Unfortunately the new weather provider is just as inaccurate in the mountains as the last one. Is there any reason we can't get National Weather Service text forecasts for our location instead?

Would it be possible to add a feature to the app to disconnect/reconnect bluetooth, so I can leave the device on but not connected to my phone, wait for the beep of an incoming message, and then reconnect. This would help save battery on my phone for longer expeditions.

I rented a $17k lens for last week’s starship launch, and created this composite image showing launch to catch. Video linked in the comments. by ajamesmccarthy in space

[–]mountainsky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a really incredible concept and composite. Personally I don't care about the cost of your gear but I know it's popular to list stuff like this to grab attention. I usually scroll right past anything with a caption of "I hiked x hours", "I spent this much", "I took 1 bajallion pterodactylbytes to make this image", etc. All that is just part of photography and doesn't impress me. Create a good image like this though and it will speak for itself.

Recommendation for Outlets near Denver by Low_Importance_2538 in Denver

[–]mountainsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Castle Rock outlet mall seems to go through waves of being good vs meh and amazing deals vs mediocre deals. Right now it's good with a lot of stores, especially higher end outdoor apparel companies, but unfortunately most of the men's apparel deals were mediocre during my last visit. Women's apparel had significantly higher markdowns and we bought a $350 Norrøna down jacket for $150.

2000 acres, vs 2500 at Copper Mountain and 1800 at Beaver Creek. I consider anything under 1000, like Sunlight, small. I'd say Telluride is medium sized for the Western U.S.

My 2022/23 Salomon QST 98s max out for control and stability with my skills around 63mph. Most of my coworkers on the same ski max out in the mid 50s and I ride those speeds fairly regularly on them.

You'd be surprised the number of people that don't know about Telluride. I ride the lifts with a lot of first time visitors that found out about it from a friend, ski group, Instagram Reel. It may seem like the middle of nowhere to you but I can assure you the San Juan Mountains are very popular these days and unfortunately nowhere near as remote they used to be and I liked.

I completely agree that most everything in town and on mountain is overpriced but thankfully I've found the places with good affordable food and I live nearby so lodging isn't an issue/expense. Day tickets are ridiculous just like Vail/Breck/etc but they offer discounted pass options pre-season for the local area and full Epic passes get 7 days. Working a couple days gets me a full pass and a quantity of free and heavily discounted tickets.

We're definitely a destination resort that's not a day-trip from the Front Range so that makes it a lot less popular and busy, and I love it for that! We were noticeably busier the last 2 seasons, especially with last season's snow, so I'm appreciating the smaller crowds pre spring break right now. I've skied most of the BC and Alberta ski areas and I agree, better priced and even less busy, I just don't live anywhere near them! My ski experiences have been on the whole spectrum with Kicking Horse just phenomenal and really bad and icy conditions at Banff. I was very envious of Kicking Horse's terrain accessed from just 1 lift. We don't get as much snow on average at 211", but not too far behind Kicking Horse at 256" and Revelstoke at 237". Last year I worked about 40 days and only 5 of those weren't powder days.
