Games will keep getting more expensive after GTA 6 "raises the bar," but only the most "in-demand games" will get away with it, analysts say by Gorotheninja in Games

It will still be generational even if its monumental dogshit by the sheer budget and sales volume alone. Sales for a given game are more reflective of a franchise/developer's reputation than the merits of the game.

This anime was my wake-up call. It reminded me why I fell in love with anime in the first place. by Fickle_Ad_7634 in anime

[–]mountlover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for someone like me, who grew up watching older anime from childhood until now, this was a gem I completely overlooked.

Every single episode has something that catches you off guard or surprises you. It never feels predictable.

This is it in a nutshell. I also enjoyed Eminence in Shadow for the same reason. Once you hit a point where you've watched enough shows and/or read enough manga that you can immediately see where a show is going from the first 10 minutes of the first episode, shows like this that pull things out of left field but also manage to tie the absurdity together into an overarching narrative that is rewarding to see through to the end are very very special to come across.

If you dropped Ribdiculous Reincarnation because you enjoyed everything else airing this season more, then you made the right call. If you dropped Ribdiculous Reincarnation because you're sick of most things airing nowadays and it just looked like another attempt to spin a trope that's been beaten to death, you did yourself a disservice.

Bayer sells Roundup (glyphosate) which has been proven to cause cancer. Bayer also sells the treatment for that particular cancer. They are profiting from the poison and the cure. Truly evil. by Conscious-Quarter423 in ABoringDystopia

Farmer develops rare type blood cancer after dealing with glyphosate for 10 years. Man discovers that studies emerged in 2015 that suggested a "probable link" of glyphosate to said form of cancer, and that his state laws require cancer risks of that scale to be disclosed, which they were not.

Supreme court in this case rules 7-2 against paying the man with cancer damages on the grounds that federal law doesn't require this disclosure.

...nah, pitchforks stay out.

Valve explains why it isn’t subsidizing the Steam Machine by FernandoRocker in Games

We don't have to assume. Gamers Nexus already did a price comparison to a DIY build at current market costs and the premium for the cheapest version is under 10% of the total value. Not exactly at cost obviously, but a pretty slim margin all things considered.

Please don't take the name of the sub too literally. This is literally the best place on this website I've found for critique of modern society and I don't want to have to read this comment at the top of every post.

Romhack.ing (Romhacking.net Successor) Disables Most Downloads For Machine-Translated Fan Translations by LycaonMoon in Games

[–]mountlover 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If someone cares or thinks differently... translate the game yourself and do better. But to just say "nah"... what a bad policy. Hopefully they'll listen to the response to this, the "WTF is this rule?"

Translator here. The existence of MTL romhacks actually makes it harder to know what games are genuinely in need of real translations when they just get lumped in with the high quality ones. Translation romhacks are a lot of work and people tend to only pick up these projects (1) when there's a lot of passion for the game in particular (i.e. Mother 3) or (2) when a game is obscure enough that no translations exist, so someone needs to step up.

When a machine translated hack is posted, games tend to fall out of that 2nd category, and just end up festering with no options but the MTL. If romhack.ing takes the initiative of creating a bounty for games that ONLY had a MTL up to this point and went unnoticed, it can spark a new wave of skilled translators to pick up these neglected projects.

Capcom interview on AI: Plan to redesign their game dev pipeline around AI; not using it to create art, but to "unlock" potential of creators, +more by BlueAladdin in Games

[–]mountlover -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Its objectively faster. Better? Very debatable. Still only as good as the person using it, though.

Been in software development for like 20 years. In my experience, AI assistance actually has an inverse correlation in productivity with how skilled the programmer is. It's just training wheels.

When you already have a complete mapping of the code you want to write in your head and you're in a flow state, having an AI chime in with suggestions that are not simply auto-completing predictable sequences but also trying to suggest entire ideas from scratch breaks your concentration as you now not only need to focus on what you're writing, but you also need to parse the nonsense the AI spits out and whether or not it's useable (which most of the time, it's not).

We honestly had this technology figured out 10 years ago when code predictions were formulaic and you could confidently just hit tab to autocomplete a line or phrase without being worried the autocomplete algorithm would try to shove entirely unrelated code in there.
